Languages
The catalogue holds audiobooks in many languages, and by default the site shows all of them. If you only want to see some, choose them under Languages in the header (in the menu on a phone). Your choice is kept in this browser and applies to search, the latest additions and the contribute list until you change it.
Choosing languages
- Tick one or several languages, up to 8. The list shows only languages the catalogue has books in, with how many. Each change applies straight away.
- All languages clears the filter and shows everything again.
- If your browser prefers a language other than English, the site may ask once, in a line under the header, whether to show only that language. It never filters anything until you answer, and No thanks means it will not ask again.
- Languages match by their main language: choosing German includes books tagged as Austrian or Swiss German too.
What is filtered
- Search
- Works and series in the header and home page search. People are never filtered - a person has no language, and a translator or narrator works in several.
- Latest additions
- The newest books on the home page.
- Contribute
- The "browse books by coverage" list. The coverage counts above it still cover every language.
A series counts as the language most of its books are in. A series split evenly between two languages is shown whatever you choose, rather than guessed at.
What is never filtered
- Book, series and person pages
- Everything about a record is shown, including its translations. A book in another language is marked with a small language chip instead.
- Lookups by ASIN or ISBN
- An exact product code always finds its book, in whatever language it is.
- Import and the Watching page
- Checking which of your books are catalogued always searches every language - a book you own is catalogued whatever you prefer to browse.
- Watch feeds, the calendar and Audiobookshelf
- Feeds carry the series you watch, and the Audiobookshelf provider has its own per-language setting (below).
Language chips
A book or series in a language outside the ones you chose - or, if you have not chosen, outside your browser's languages - wears a small chip with its language code, such as DE. A chip only marks a book; it never hides one.
Sharing a filtered search
A link can name languages with lang, for
example /?q=harry+potter&lang=de. Opening
it shows that search in German and the selector says so, but it does not change your
own choice - that only happens if you change the selector yourself.
The API parameter
The same filter is the lang query parameter
on /api/v1/search,
works/search,
series/search,
works/latest and
coverage/works: a comma-separated list of up
to 8 language tags, such as lang=de,en,
matched by their main language. Leave it out for every language.
people/search accepts it and ignores it. The
details are in the API reference.
Audiobookshelf in your language
The Audiobookshelf provider has a per-language address: add the language to the provider URL, for example
https://meta.audiosilo.app/abs/de It ranks matches in that language first rather than leaving the others out, so a book whose only catalogued edition is in another language is still found. A book by the author you searched for still comes before a language match by somebody else. Setup steps are on the Audiobookshelf page.
Where your choice is kept
Only in this browser, in local storage under
audiosilo-meta:languages. There is no account,
and nothing about it is sent anywhere except the
lang parameter on the requests the filter
narrows. See the privacy policy.
