07 The Last Battle characters
By C.S. Lewis
Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Aslan (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The Lion of Narnia, known to the reader from the earlier books: the country's maker and true king, the son of the Emperor beyond the sea. He comes and goes as he chooses and has not been seen in Narnia for generations, so that most of what is said about him now is hearsay and story.
Shift (Antagonist)
Appears from the start
A clever, elderly ape living beside a pool at the western end of Narnia, who considers himself far too old and wise to do any work. He has spent years telling his one friend what to think, and he is quick to see what a thing lying in the water might be worth to him.
Puzzle (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A Talking Donkey, patient, humble and easily talked into anything. He has been convinced that he is stupid and that his friend the ape knows best about everything, and he does the fetching and carrying for both of them while worrying about whether what he is doing is right.
King Tirian (Protagonist)
First appears in chapter 2
The King of Narnia, a young man of about twenty-five or so, brave, straightforward and quick-tempered. He rules a country at peace and longs to have lived in the great days he has only heard of in stories, and he is ready to believe good news about Aslan before he has checked it.
Jewel (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
A Unicorn and the king's dearest friend, snow-white with a blue horn, who fights beside him and speaks to him as an equal. He is courteous, fierce in battle, and entirely loyal.
Roonwit (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
A centaur, a reader of the stars and one of the king's counsellors. Grave and unflattering, he reports that the heavens say nothing at all about Aslan's return and a great deal about disaster.
Tash (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 3
The god of Calormen, worshipped in Tashbaan and named in the oaths of Calormene soldiers, and by tradition the opposite of everything Aslan is. The ape now proclaims that Tash and Aslan are two names for one being.
Eustace Scrubb (Protagonist)
First appears in chapter 4
A boy from England who has been in Narnia twice before, on the eastern voyage and in the search for the lost prince. He is level-headed and practical, and arrives with no idea of how much time has passed here since he last came.
Jill Pole (Protagonist)
First appears in chapter 4
A girl from England who came to Narnia once before with Eustace to find the lost prince. She is the better woodsman of the two, quiet on her feet, a good shot and a good scout, and she has learned since her last visit to be careful about signs and instructions.
Poggin (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 7
A Red Dwarf who breaks away from his fellows to join the king, and is thereafter the most cheerful and useful member of a very small company. He is practical about food, weapons and what the enemy is likely to do next.
Farsight (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 8
A Talking Eagle who ranges far over the country and brings the king word of what is happening beyond his own valley. Precise and unsentimental in his reports, he sees more of the war than anyone else alive.
Ginger (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 8
A large, sleek Talking Cat in the ape's confidence, smooth-voiced, unhurried and entirely unfrightened by anything he has helped to arrange. He has private understandings with the Calormene commander that the other beasts know nothing about.
Rishda Tarkaan (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 8
The Calormene officer commanding the troops that have come into Narnia, careful, polite and effective. He works with the ape while treating him with contempt, and manages the beasts by way of proclamations he does not believe himself.
Emeth (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 10
A young Calormene officer, devout and serious, who has served Tash all his life and dislikes what his commanders are doing with the god's name. When the stable is opened he asks, against orders and at the risk of his life, to be allowed to go in and look on Tash face to face.
