The second entry in the 1% Lifesteal series continues after Freddy Stern's escape from Camp Violet, where he had been living under a dead prisoner's identity. When the man's father turns violent, Freddy kills him in the struggle and flees, carrying stolen valuables and bound to a spirit called Bloodshed. In the town of Imperta he trades rare medicine for a legal identity, becoming Liam Cuttingsworth, then travels on to Nova York to start over away from Craven, the crime clan that once held him captive. With little money and no delving experience, he joins an established party as an unarmed helper to learn the basics of exploring dangerous passage realms, while secretly developing his water and blood abilities and hiding both his true strength and his past.
