In short (whole book)

Freddy Stern survives a passage attack, manifests a valuable farming prime, and trades it for the water-affinity talent 1% Lifesteal. He discovers that the talent can heal lasting damage when he harms living things and trains under Mark Affronte while secretly protecting Bloodshed, a sentient remnant wanted by the Craven clan. Craven kidnaps and tortures Freddy, then imposes a fraudulent debt and sends him to forced labor at Camp Violet. Freddy conceals his recovery, develops his abilities, and arranges an escape with Peter Vane. Possessed pursuers burn the camp, Peter dies warning Freddy, and Freddy escapes through a passage only to be swallowed by a leviathan. He kills it from within. Bloodshed then cages its ether construct, grants Freddy blood affinity with consent, and helps him kill the Craven patriarch. Freddy rises to two stars with a mysterious third affinity, while Bloodshed survives inside his ethercosm and the wider Craven and possession threats remain unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Freddy Stern is a poor 21-year-old cashier whose route home is disrupted when a new passage opens in the Twenty-Sixth District. Small armed invaders emerge and kill civilians. Freddy kills one with its own dagger before arch-human responders secure the area, but officials deny him a reward and confiscate what he recovered. Soon afterward, he manifests a rare farming prime with three affinities. An Association trader exchanges it for cash, training materials, and a water-affinity prime that grants 1% Lifesteal. Freddy accepts the new prime, registers as an arch-human, leaves his hypermarket job, and begins learning how to gather ether. In the nether echo, Freddy encounters dangerous vestiges and a bloody skeletal entity hidden near his discarded belongings. The entity destroys an attacker, restores Freddy's projection, and identifies itself as Bloodshed. It is a rare remnant that treats Freddy as its master and obeys him. Freddy hides Bloodshed rather than reporting it. He remains a weak and inexperienced arch-human, but now possesses a secret entity powerful enough to attract dangerous attention.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

Bloodshed escapes its makeshift hiding place while powerful outsiders search for the remnant created around Freddy's bloodied clothing. A hostile patriarch claims an interest in it, but the city lord initially defends Freddy's legal ownership. Meanwhile, Freddy isolates himself and forms several basic water abilities. Madame Moorlap, a prominent host and lord, approaches him because he was the first person to discover New Earth's direct passage to the exceptionally dangerous realm C-000421. She places him under contract for a future interview, relocates him, and funds six months of preparation. Mark Affronte becomes Freddy's personal trainer and neighbor. Their difficult first session develops into a more trusting arrangement as Freddy begins physical conditioning and water-wisp gathering. A clinic doctor finds serious hidden health problems and advises Freddy not to use 1% Lifesteal. At a secluded pond, however, Freddy discovers that the talent activates when he damages plants. The resulting healing removes soreness, injuries, and even old scars, showing that the talent can repair lasting damage despite its low percentage.

Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)

Freddy uses plant-triggered lifesteal to support increasingly severe training. Bloodshed reaches his new home, and Mark learns both of the remnant and Freddy's healing talent. Because Bloodshed can subjugate vestiges on Freddy's behalf, it also offers an unusual path for developing his abilities. Pressure soon builds around them: a supposed journalist threatens Mark through his sister's academy place, while Freddy's doctor secretly plans to poison him before his healing can erase a heart defect. Madame Moorlap interrupts the attempt, kills the doctor, and turns his regenerating heart into a health source Freddy can use. With Mark's help, Freddy exploits his supreme-quality recovery to build strength and practice martial techniques. He also begins dangerous water tempering and creates a basic water spell. When Mark fears retaliation against himself and his family, Freddy brings the problem to Madame Moorlap. She extends her protection and concludes that the passage incident produced anomalies, including a possible unique ether construct with a true soul. Freddy suspects Bloodshed is the unique being hunted, but keeps that conclusion from her and resolves to protect the remnant's secret.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

Freddy's attempt to develop as a water martial artist is shaken when a dispute with a larger gym member ends in an apparently fatal Flowing Strike. Matt Canstone contains the official account and warns Freddy that arch-human force is inherently lethal. Freddy later manifests a scythe soul construct that greatly improves essence extraction, while Madame Moorlap grows suspicious of his reaction to the blood-affinity Craven clan. He admits some lesser secrets but continues hiding Bloodshed. Mark's infected delve injury and threats to Sarah's education leave him vulnerable to coercion. Freddy sends Bloodshed to a dump under a long waiting order, hoping the separation will defeat the search. At Madame Moorlap's party, Craven agents abduct him. Madame and the city lord defeat the Craven patriarch and his elders, but the city lord accepts a mining stake in return for delaying Freddy's recovery. The clan tortures and mutilates Freddy for Bloodshed's location, yet he refuses to reveal it. Stephen White then assigns him a fraudulent debt of $13,321,739 and sends him through C-000421 as forced labor for a remote mining expedition.

Story so far - through chapter 34 (this book)

Freddy arrives at Camp Violet, an underground mining settlement where Craven debtors face high quotas, tightly controlled disputes, and lethal surrounding caverns. Convinced the clan never intends to release him, he plans to meet his quota while secretly healing, training, and preparing to escape. He wins an early sanctioned fight despite his mutilated condition and learns that efficient mining leaves time for exploration. A hidden lake cavern provides water vestiges and enough wisps to advance his abilities. An undercover expedition employee begins investigating Freddy, initially drawing the wrong conclusion that a political patron stands behind him. Freddy evolves Create Water and pursues further upgrades, but accumulated injuries eventually force him into the medical tent and add more debt. He joins the camp's foraging program to earn treatment and create a believable explanation for future recovery. After four workers pressure him to support a rebellion, Freddy reports them to the administration. They are executed, and Stephen White rewards Freddy by restoring access to treatment, but his public alignment with camp authority makes him a likely target among the other prisoners.

Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)

Freddy evolves Waterbody Tempering into Adaptive Water Body, earns treatment through high-value foraging, and secretly uses 1% Lifesteal to restore the parts of his body Craven destroyed. Masked workers attack him for informing on the rebellion, but he defeats them. The silver-haired foraging assistant is revealed as Peter Vane, a disguised two-star staff member. Peter offers escape assistance in exchange for help from the powerful master he mistakenly believes Freddy serves, and Freddy accepts without correcting him. Freddy continues training, then defeats Skull Crusher in a sanctioned arena match with one powerful charge. The display causes Camp Violet's leaders to send a three-person capture squad after him. Peter files a false report and considers smuggling Freddy to Starhold, but the squad discovers an endless tiled realm where two members become possessed. The possessors set Camp Violet on fire, and the administrators evacuate, abandoning those left behind. Peter reaches Freddy with fatal burns and dies after warning him. Freddy takes Peter's identification, intending to pose as a burned survivor, but the attackers find him. He flees through underwater passages and is swallowed by a vast leviathan as Bloodshed races toward him.

Story so far - through chapter 41 (this book)

Inside the leviathan, Freddy survives by creating water, attacking its organs to trigger lifesteal, and consuming its flesh and blood. He kills the creature and reaches the ocean, but its ether construct follows and attacks his soul on shore. Bloodshed arrives in spirit form and cages the construct inside Freddy's ethercosm, losing much of its own substance in the effort. With Bloodshed's consent, Freddy gains blood affinity. Bloodshed then gathers the leviathan's blood into a colossal three-headed body. The Craven patriarch arrives and fights them. Bloodshed supplies Freddy with lifesteal while Freddy forms a leviathan shell and repeatedly uses a devastating leviathan-head attack that also burns and tears apart his own body. He kills the patriarch. The resulting ether advances Freddy to two stars and leaves him with water affinity, blood affinity, and a third affinity he cannot yet identify. Bloodshed remains alive but confined in a rune cage within Freddy. Mark is still serving the Craven militia at Starhold, and the wider clan, its labor system, and the possession outbreak remain unresolved. A search party later finds a severely burned survivor carrying Peter Vane's identification and reports the person as Peter, but the survivor's actual identity is not confirmed.

How does it end? (ending)

Camp Violet burns after two members of the squad pursuing Freddy become possessed, and its administrators evacuate without the workers. Peter Vane dies after warning Freddy, who takes his identification but is forced through an underwater passage before he can attempt the planned disguise. Freddy kills a leviathan from inside it and reaches shore, where Bloodshed cages the beast's attacking ether construct within Freddy's ethercosm. Bloodshed willingly helps forge Freddy's blood affinity and then joins him against the Craven patriarch. Freddy kills the patriarch and ascends to two stars, gaining water, blood, and an unexplained third affinity. Bloodshed survives in a rune cage within him, while Freddy's new leviathan-based attack badly damages his body. Mark remains in coerced Craven service at Starhold, Sarah's situation is unresolved, and the wider clan and Camp Violet's possession threat remain active concerns. A search party later reports a burned survivor carrying Peter's identification as Peter, but the survivor's true identity is not established.
