In short (whole book)

Keith Winterscar leads an expedition to bring To’Wrathh to the Division Stone, which could free her from Relinquished. A conflict at Aura separates Keith from his allies when he and enemy commander Lyrian Draconis fall through a portal into an unknown lower stratum. They form a conditional alliance, recover their equipment, defeat Murder Shrimp, and gain the help of Kress, Silverfur, and the Grey Roamers. At a trading outpost they contact the Icon of Stars, a surviving Golden Age ship AI, but To’Orda attacks under To’Avalis's direction. Keith disrupts the remote cannons and escapes by turning To’Orda's blow into a high-speed retreat. He survives, but his landing point and Draconis's fate are unknown. To’Wrathh remains bound to Relinquished, the Division Stone mission is unfinished, and no route home has been established.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Keith Winterscar is Kidra's brother, a Winterscar knight, and the wearer of the relic armor Journey. His father, Tenisent, is a Deathless protector, while Sagrius is a Winterscar captain and Atius is the clan's Deathless patron. Wrath is a Feather who rejected her former purpose and became Keith's ally. Relinquished remains a threat because her unity fractals hold power over the Feathers. Abraxas serves as a remote machine guide. To’Aacar, another machine adversary, is believed dead, while the hostile Feather To’Avalis remains active.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Keith leads Wrath, Tenisent, Sagrius, and Winterscar knights underground to reach the Division Stone and free Wrath from Relinquished. Atius disguises the departure as an anti-slaver operation, while Abraxas supplies directions through Mite infrastructure. The expedition conceals its unusual abilities as it crosses a ruined city, kills machines, and searches for a terminal. It joins Quath's threatened merchant convoy after Tenisent reveals himself as Deathless. In return for protection to the Grand Highway, Quath and his forward captain provide terminal coordinates and a detailed route map. Tenisent also impersonates another retired Deathless so machine records will point away from Keith. Before separating, the forward captain asks for help protecting his young nephew, a newly emerged Deathless who risks being forced into service. Keith proposes sending the boy to Atius for shelter and training. Quath sees the plan as a possible route for other endangered young Deathless as well. The expedition then leaves the convoy and reaches the Mite terminal.

Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)

At the terminal, Abraxas gives Keith a route toward the second layer and explains that Keith's Mite lantern can carry and communicate with Mites. Relinquished separately confronts To’Wrathh with altered evidence portraying Keith as a Feather-killing Deathless. The supposedly dead To’Aacar is present, but To’Wrathh recognizes that To’Avalis is using his body as a disguise. To protect Keith, she persuades Relinquished to approve a false operation in which she will gain his love and betray him. She then tells the expedition the truth. To’Wrathh begins staging evidence for the deception, but the arrival of Yorob creates a new opportunity. He reports that machines from her former group now live with Chosen humans in a settlement beyond Abraxas's route. Keith chooses to detour there for supplies, allies, and To’Wrathh's sake. Journey meanwhile filters the perceptions of Catheda, its anti-machine crusader engram, so she can function around Yorob. After several days, Yorob guides the party to the fortified town. The residents admit To’Wrathh and then welcome the expedition. Legis represents the Chosen community, and the repaired drake Fido is present among them.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

Legis explains that Fido chose to guard displaced Chosen after reconsidering the drakes' belief that human life is only suffering. The expedition reaches Aura, where humans and machines face a Deathless force seeking revenge for the fall of Caprenor. Lyrian Draconis leads the vendetta because friends died during sabotage of the city's defenses, while his older mentor Lionheart rejects Chosen civilians as legitimate human allies. Marcella, who helped destroy Caprenor's pillar heart, organizes Aura's response. To keep Relinquished from tracing her, To’Wrathh's presence must remain hidden. Aura offers the Deathless a chance to withdraw, but negotiations fail. Keith's group presents itself as a Deathless clan so its members can use their full occult abilities without exposing the expedition's real purpose. Tenisent faces Lionheart, and Keith is assigned to Draconis. The Winterscar knights outmaneuver the larger formation, intercept its support effects, and kill several opponents during the retreat without losing one of their own. Sagrius uses the veteran souls within him to break a concentrated defense. The main enemy formation is routed, but the individual fights involving Lionheart and Draconis are not yet resolved.

Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)

The Deathless withdrawal proves to be a delaying action while their airspeeder attacks. Fido strips its shields, and Keith boards with Sagrius and two knights as Tenisent contains Lionheart. Draconis isolates Keith aboard the craft, disables its controls, and collapses an onyx pillar over a vast drop. The damaged ship falls toward a portal. Keith prevents Draconis from escaping through death, keeps him alive as a prisoner, and is pulled through the gate with him. They land in a forested lower stratum where no traveler is known to return. Keith loses critical weapons and Suya's Mite seeker, while Journey runs dangerously low on power. He frees the trapped Draconis, salvages power, and reveals his identity and To’Wrathh's alliance with humanity. Their accounts of Caprenor expose a central misunderstanding: Draconis found the city empty but did not investigate the refugee settlements. They swear a conditional pact to return and verify the truth, with Draconis promising to halt his force if Keith is right. After diseased animals loot the wreck and carry off Keith's equipment, the pair restore Draconis's armor, arm themselves from the ship, and pursue the moving Mite seeker as practical allies.

Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)

Keith and Lyrian Draconis recover the gear and Mite seeker taken by the coordinated animal swarm. Journey reboots Catheda after its perception filter causes corruption and limits her to safer information. The pair then encounter organized giant wolves, later identified as Grey Roamers, who watch without attacking. At a Mite fountain, an intelligent wolf tries to warn them before a concealed machine called Murder Shrimp strikes from behind a waterfall. Keith and Draconis damage it, but it destroys the fountain and escapes, renewing their power crisis. Silverfur reports the newcomers to Kress, an intermediary who considers surviving humans nearly impossible. Keith and Draconis eventually defeat Murder Shrimp by destroying its active soul fractal and recover eight power cells, giving them a substantial reserve. Kress agrees to translate for the Grey Roamers and guides the pair toward a cave beside the great portal. The terminal there has been deliberately severed, apparently to prevent a call for help. Keith uses scavenging skills, a machine component, power fluid, and a newly made heat soul fractal to repair the deeper connection. He enters the terminal's digital network in an attempt to contact To’Wrathh and the others.

Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)

To’Wrathh searches the inactive portal after Keith and Lyrian Draconis vanish, but no known traveler has returned through it. Relinquished summons her alongside To’Avalis, who is still using To’Aacar's damaged shell. After learning that To’Avalis interfered with the earlier mission, Relinquished nevertheless approves his proposal for an open joint hunt that will make To’Wrathh's apparent defection more convincing. Keith has meanwhile encountered Relinquished digitally, revealing his name and the location of a nearby terminal. Kress arrives with Silverfur's Grey Roamers and offers a route to a trading outpost whose long-range array may contact the Icon of Stars. Keith and Draconis earn greater trust from the pack while traveling and sharing food. Keith also orders Journey to accelerate the development of its stored crusader engram until it can accept allied machines. The updated engram acknowledges To’Wrathh as an ally, even as Keith's nightmares return. To’Orda enters the region under To’Avalis's direction. At the outpost, resident Grey Roamers dispute the newcomers' humanity and Kress's authority, but Kress secures access. Keith and Draconis enter the tilted remains of a human starship and locate its elevated communications console.

Story so far - through chapter 54 (this book)

Keith and Lyrian Draconis reach the outpost terminal, where Odin traders recognize Keith's armor as human despite believing humanity extinct. The Icon of Stars opens a private channel and identifies itself as the surviving AI of a Golden Age cruise ship. It warns of two incoming machines. A drake carrying To’Orda attacks, supported by To’Avalis and a remote cannon operator using floating plates. To’Wrathh joins their channel and openly warns them not to harm Keith, further exposing her loyalty. Keith and Draconis ambush the attackers inside the ship, disable the plates, and force To’Orda and the drake back outside. Keith steals a repaired plate with an occult lash and turns its linked cannon against the pursuit. To’Orda releases a trapped Grey Roamer pup rather than exploit it, but continues the hunt. To’Avalis then tries and fails to interfere remotely with Journey before disconnecting. When the cannon operator shuts down the captured links, Keith fires through one plate's portal to damage the distant installation and destroys the plate. Finally, he deliberately accepts a hammer strike and uses an occult lash to convert the impact into an escape beyond To’Orda's sight. Keith lives, but his landing point is unknown. Draconis's immediate fate is also unknown, and no route home has been found.

How does it end? (ending)

Keith survives To’Orda's attack at the Grey Roamer trading outpost. To’Avalis fails to interfere with Journey, and Keith damages the remote cannon installation before using an occult lash and To’Orda's hammer strike to propel himself beyond pursuit. His landing place is unknown, and the available account does not establish where Lyrian Draconis is after the attack. The Icon of Stars remains an operational contact and possible source of information, while Kress and Silverfur have created a basis for cooperation with the Grey Roamers. To’Wrathh is still connected to Relinquished and must preserve a cover that hostile Feathers increasingly distrust. Relinquished knows Keith's identity and general location, To’Avalis remains active, and To’Orda has only failed in this immediate attempt. The original expedition is separated from Keith, the Division Stone has not freed To’Wrathh, and neither a return route nor the outcome of the Aura conflict is settled.
