Winnie-the-Pooh and his friends turn everyday problems in the Forest into a series of adventures. Pooh's attempt to take honey from bees fails, and a generous meal leaves him stuck in Rabbit's doorway until he grows thinner. He and Piglet follow their own footprints while hunting an imaginary animal, and Pooh restores Eeyore's missing tail after finding it in Owl's possession. A trap for a Heffalump catches Pooh instead. For Eeyore's birthday, Pooh and Piglet bring an empty honey jar and a burst balloon, which together delight him. Rabbit's attempt to drive away Kanga and Roo ends with the newcomers accepted as friends. During an expedition, Pooh finds what Christopher Robin names the North Pole. When a flood isolates Piglet, Pooh and Christopher Robin rescue him, and Christopher Robin holds a party to honor Pooh's role in saving their friend.

Christopher Robin asks for a story about Winnie-the-Pooh, his teddy bear and friend in the Forest. Pooh tries to reach a beehive by floating beneath a balloon and pretending to be a small cloud, while Christopher Robin assists from the ground. The bees are not convinced, and the effort ends without honey. Pooh next visits Rabbit and eats so much that he becomes wedged in the narrow entrance to Rabbit's home. Christopher Robin decides that Pooh must wait until he grows thinner. For a week Rabbit uses Pooh's exposed legs as a towel rack while friends keep him company; once the time has passed, they pull him free.

After his unsuccessful honey expedition and his week stuck in Rabbit's doorway, Pooh joins Piglet in following mysterious tracks around a group of trees. Each circuit adds more prints, making them imagine that an increasing number of dangerous creatures are nearby. Christopher Robin reveals that they have been following their own tracks. Pooh later visits the gloomy donkey Eeyore and learns that his tail is missing. Seeking advice from Owl, Pooh recognizes the tail as the cord Owl has been using beside his door and returns it to Eeyore. Pooh and Piglet then decide to catch a Heffalump in a pit baited with honey. Pooh becomes hungry during the night, goes looking for the jar, and falls into the trap with it stuck on his head. Piglet mistakes him for the feared creature until Christopher Robin identifies him.

Pooh and Piglet discover that nobody has remembered Eeyore's birthday. Pooh means to bring a jar of honey but eats it on the way, so Owl labels the empty jar as a useful container. Piglet falls while carrying a balloon and bursts it. Eeyore is nevertheless delighted: the deflated balloon fits in the jar and can be taken in and out. When Kanga and Roo move to the Forest, Rabbit fears the change and organizes a plan with Pooh and Piglet to hide Roo until Kanga agrees to leave. Piglet takes Roo's place in Kanga's pocket, but Kanga sees through the disguise and gives Piglet a bath and medicine while pretending he is Roo. The scheme collapses, and Kanga and Roo become part of the group. Christopher Robin then leads an expedition to find the North Pole. After several mishaps, Pooh picks up a long pole that helps when Roo falls into the water, and Christopher Robin declares it to be the North Pole they sought.

The Forest's adventures have brought its residents closer: Eeyore has received unlikely but satisfying birthday presents, Kanga and Roo have become friends, and Pooh has been credited with finding the North Pole. Heavy rain then floods the Forest and surrounds Piglet's house. Piglet places a message asking for help in a bottle, which eventually reaches Christopher Robin. Pooh is also stranded, but uses one of his honey jars to stay afloat and reaches Christopher Robin. Seeing Piglet's danger, Pooh suggests using Christopher Robin's open umbrella as a boat. They cross the water and rescue Piglet. Christopher Robin later arranges a party in Pooh's honor for helping save their friend. He gives Pooh a pencil case, the guests celebrate, and Eeyore quietly entertains himself with the empty jar and burst balloon. Pooh and Piglet leave the gathering together, with the Forest community safe and reunited.

After Christopher Robin's party honoring Pooh's rescue of Piglet, Eeyore enjoys a game with Piglet's deflated balloon and Pooh's empty honey jar while the guests celebrate. Christopher Robin gives Pooh a pencil case as a reward, and the animals cheer for him. Pooh and Piglet then walk home together through the Forest. The book closes without separating the friends or resolving a larger conflict: its connected adventures leave Pooh still devoted to honey, Piglet still his close companion, and Christopher Robin still the trusted center of their small community.
