She entered the Thaumaturgic University under Thaddeus Lacer's sponsorship while also becoming entangled with Oliver Dryden and the Verdant Stag. A stolen book and the amulet connected to her transformations drew dangerous attention. Police retained blood linked to Chauvin, giving them a means to search for her despite the change in body. Her father, Ennis Nott, remained imprisoned, while a coercive marriage bargain and the collateral of her mother's knot ring threatened her future. She also owed Katerine a large debt and continued to work for the Verdant Stag. These obligations left every identity dependent on secrets held by others. As the new volume begins, her university identity remains intact, but the blood, the book, the debt, and the separation between her public and clandestine lives are all vulnerable.

They find police and university personnel operating a large array to locate the Raven Queen, while Sebastien's ward nears its limit. Tanya Canelo arrives shortly before citywide alarms interrupt the spell. An explosion destroys the divination room, and Tanya pulls Sebastien and Damien clear of the collapse. Officials later call the emergency a false alarm caused by alchemy. Her earnings and the sale of magical materials reduce her Verdant Stag debt, but do not clear it. Working as Chauvin, Sebastien staffs a makeshift infirmary, stabilizes casualties, uses an adapting solution to replace a badly wounded child's lost blood, and helps repel an assault on the treatment site. Oliver Dryden interrogates the captured leader and learns that a university faction backs the Morrows. He coerces access to a warded room, kills the Morrow leader after an attempted trap, and discovers tunnels and a cache of hundreds of valuable beast cores alongside other restricted components. The alliance has broken the Morrows' leadership and seized their warehouse, but the hidden stockpile points to a much larger and still unexplained university preparation.
