A Bond Broken recap

After the Undying Lord trial, Trent returns as an Al'rashian Survivalist and trains under Cullen beside Tersa, while his adopted brother Orion struggles through a distant swamp. Trent and Tersa enter the Garden of Clarity separately. Tersa confronts her rage and becomes a Stormbringer, but the garden's keeper severs Trent's bond to Kirstin and forces the dangerous Fairy Cloak upon him before being deposed. The ability makes others overlook Trent and strengthens his aggressive impulses. Cullen later kills a greater ice serpent that was mysteriously transported into the region, while an Al'rashian merchant equips Trent and warns him to hide a trial chest shielded from divine notice. Orion helps Blackmire by taking an unbonded mud elemental into his spirit orb. Trent leaves Al'drossford for a solitary survival quest with a Dusk Tower shadow secretly attached to him, then registers as an adventurer with Agatha's help. Tersa is set for promotion, Orion heads toward the road, and the Embra remain separated amid signs of a possible Al'rashian restoration.

Previously: Trent entered the Land of the Undying Lord as Kirstin's bonded summon alongside Tersa, Cullen, and other guards and adventurers. The survival trial exposed the group to prolonged danger and left lasting losses. Trent freed the imprisoned Orion Embra, an exiled Al'rashian warrior, and the two became adopted brothers. Trent emerged physically transformed, with violet eyes, Al'rashian heritage, and a connection to the traditions of the Dusk Wraiths. The trial's keeper was the former king of fallen Al'rashia, who had broken his own rules to shelter Orion. He ordered Orion to find Clan Embra and travel to Al'drossford, where he could reunite with Trent. Believing the brothers might help renew the scattered Al'rashian people, the keeper also summoned the ancient master of the Dusk Tower to guide them.

The survivors return near the Burning Lake, but Matt is missing and the ordeal has left the group deeply unsettled. Cullen finds that Trent has become a Swordsman, while Tersa's new Brute specialization magnifies her anger until she attacks him. Rather than dismiss her outright, he gives her two weeks to develop a balancing warrior path. Trent declares Tersa part of Clan Embra and his sister alongside Orion. Cullen separates the pair from the main party for relentless field training, teaching them to treat combat skills as practiced techniques rather than automatic gifts. Trent improves his longsword work, movement, tracking, and durability, while Tersa trains with a spear. Elsewhere, Orion begins crossing a dangerous swamp to seek Clan Embra. He uses the thousands of minor elementals housed in his spirit orb to defeat a firebee swarm, though the encounter exposes how much control he still lacks. The Dusk Tower master quietly follows Trent's party, concerned about the young Survivalist's training and the responsibilities awaiting him. At Sly Hill, Francis resumes command of the traumatized survivors and begins restoring their cohesion through drills and a manageable trial.

Cullen tests Trent and Tersa against a pack of grax. Tersa's first reckless charge leaves her surrounded, but Trent abandons his bow when necessary and the pair recover to win without Cullen's intervention. The lesson reinforces that Tersa must resist the urges created by Brute, while Trent advances Swordsman and gains a safer fencing technique. In the swamp, Orion develops new magic and chooses the rare Dominating Tyrant path. Its influence pushes him toward arrogance and unnecessary conflict, but the restraint bound to his Spirit Summoner class helps him regain control. Cullen then takes his trainees into a protected garden. A curse from Tersa provokes the nature goddess, who binds her and draws Cullen's submission. The goddess identifies Trent as an Al'rashian balancer with a nearly broken bond, fails in an attempt to mark him, and grants him Earth Manipulation. She leaves an unexplained mark on Tersa instead. The Dusk Tower master later confronts the goddess and shields Trent from her plans. At the nearby Garden of Clarity, Trent enters an individual trial, befriends its fairy gardeners, discovers an earth elemental inside his vambraces, and harvests the garden before approaching its inner challenge.

Tersa and Trent face separate versions of the Garden of Clarity. Tersa panics around the fairies and uses her rage to gather them, driving herself toward the central fountain. Trent refuses needless violence, reaches the fountain peacefully, and defeats a duplicate opponent after the keeper unfairly adds it to his cleared trial. The keeper answers her debt by using old magic to sever Trent's bond with Kirstin, destroying the purpose around which he had organized his life. A higher authority intervenes, forces the keeper to grant further compensation, and transforms Trent with Fairy Cloak. He selects effects that dampen his presence, improve stealth, and mask his status, then collapses. The keeper is stripped of her office and bound to the fountain as its guardian. At her own fountain, Tersa recognizes that her aggression has endangered Trent and Orion and echoes her abusive father. She chooses a path combining warrior, rogue, and lightning magic, emerging as an advanced Stormbringer with Cleaver, dueling wands, and Calming Presence. A new fairy queen wakes Trent and leads the freed fairies away. Though devastated and no longer bound to Kirstin, Trent decides to return to Al'drossford because he still trusts Tersa and Cullen. When he exits, Fairy Cloak immediately causes both of them to overlook and misidentify him.

A greater ice serpent appears far outside its natural region. Cullen sends Tersa away with Trent, though Fairy Cloak repeatedly makes him forget Trent is present, and kills the level-200 beast with Peacemaker. Evidence that it was sealed and transported leads him to suspect unknown interference. On the road, Trent and Tersa meet a traveling Al'rashian merchant and his speaking greater dire wolf. The merchant trades them practical abilities and equipment in exchange for their trial loot. He gives Tersa Storage and other useful skills, while steering Trent away from more offensive magic and toward Block, Disarm, Parry, Balm, and Mend. Like Cullen, he struggles to retain awareness of Trent, connecting the effect to the recent trial reward. He recognizes the boy as Trent Embra and explains more of the Survivalist tradition. When Trent reveals a chest taken from a trial, the merchant identifies it as an artifact capable of hiding its contents from the gods and orders him to keep it secret. Cullen rejoins the trainees after the merchant departs, still investigating the serpent's displacement and still vulnerable to Fairy Cloak's masking.

Orion finds the Blackmire tribe trying to contain a huge mud elemental whose spreading swamp threatens newly viable farmland. After their ice prison fails, he heals the tribe's shaman and offers to negotiate as a Spirit Summoner. The elemental agrees to enter his spirit orb while Orion helps it seek a name and a resting place, but it does not accept a pact. Blackmire hosts Orion briefly and then sends him under guard toward the road. Meanwhile, Cullen and Tersa return to Al'drossford. Tersa remains undertrained in basic combat, but her new Stormbringer path has secured her place in the guard and Cullen schedules her promotion to junior guardsman. The Dusk Tower master recognizes Al'drossford as a reconstruction meant to gather the scattered Al'rashian clans and discovers that its throne will remain barred until a future king is chosen after their reunion. Trent, feeling unwanted after the loss of his bond and repeatedly overlooked because of Fairy Cloak, leaves the keep to begin a two-week solitary Survivalist quest. A shape-changing inhabitant of the Dusk Tower recognizes that he is in immediate danger and merges with his shadow as he departs.

The numbered story closes with the three Embra on separate paths. Orion peacefully draws the Blackmire mud elemental into his spirit orb without securing a pact, then leaves the tribe under escort toward the road. Tersa returns to Al'drossford as an advanced Stormbringer, and Cullen plans to promote her to junior guardsman while he investigates the unknown force that displaced a greater ice serpent. Trent, shaken by the severing of his bond to Kirstin, leaves the keep to complete a two-week Survivalist quest alone. Fairy Cloak still hides him from attention and pushes him toward aggression, while a Dusk Tower shadow secretly joins him. Afterward, Agatha identifies the danger in the ability, supplies Trent, and helps him register as an adventurer before he departs. A young royal woman who intends to escape court control and form an adventuring party is also approaching Al'drossford. The concealed trial chest, divine interest in Trent, Orion's unsettled elemental, the barred Al'drossford throne, and the unexplained interference remain unresolved.
