Previously: Siobhan has built a second life as the male university student Sebastien Siverling while becoming publicly known as the Raven Queen. Her secret allies include Oliver Dryden, leader of the Verdant Stag, and Liza, a healer and ward specialist. Thaddeus Lacer is Sebastien's mentor as well as a Red Guard special agent. Damien Westbay is Sebastien's close friend but does not know the truth of her identities. The High Crown's forces have already attempted to kidnap Sebastien, and an unknown rescuer altered the operative's memory. Siobhan possesses a protected journal connected to the historical researcher Merton, while Oliver holds another. She also carries an unexplained presence in her mind, and her shadow magic has previously escaped her control.

Thaddeus Lacer persuades the Red Guard to assess Siobhan rather than attack her. She considers abandoning Gilbratha, but leaving would cost her university education, allies, and possible help with the entity in her mind. Oliver Dryden hopes his protected journal contains a way to produce solarium and sees that knowledge as a means to overturn the political order. Sebastien refuses, citing vows and danger. Thaddeus then takes him to three protected journals in the restricted archives. Their identity wards admit Sebastien without the usual deception. Thaddeus concludes that Sebastien may be a descendant of Merton and promises to keep the possibility secret, but he still misunderstands the real reason both Sebastien and Siobhan can open the journals.

Thaddeus accepts the mistaken theory that Sebastien serves as the Raven Queen's intermediary and may descend from Merton. Siobhan builds coded emergency bracelets, gives Millennium a safer sleep proxy, and discovers that Deidre Johnson has founded the Undreaming Order in the Raven Queen's name. The Order provides food, shelter, healing, and protection, but has already conducted an unsanctioned child rescue. Siobhan assumes responsibility for guiding it, removes false teachings, funds education, and tries to prevent coercive or reckless action. Its members decide to expand food, medicine, education, and emergency preparation, although their conclusions about her plans remain speculative. During break, Siobhan researches the entity in her mind and concludes that direct alteration of its seal is too dangerous. A restricted scroll provides new functions for her guiding-light symbols, including remote alerts and dream messages. The process produces a third independently usable facet of her will, offering finer control but no additional power. Her sleep-proxy raven dies during the ordeal. After waking, Sebastien orders Damien to destroy their research into rising aberrance. Damien, Anna, and Deidre help hide her injury, while Anna objects to being excluded from the dangerous work. Elsewhere, Oliver returns from his failed intervention near Osham and confirms that the Architects abducted multiple nulls. He captures Grandmaster Kiernan, who admits that a powerful Architects member drove the operation despite internal opposition.
