The High Lady of the Night Court and one of the book's narrators. Months after the war with Hybern she is helping rebuild Velaris and the artists' quarter that the invasion wrecked, and she has begun to paint again after a long stretch without it. Newly settled into ruling beside Rhysand, she balances the court's obligations, the fear the war left in her, and a family that has come apart in different ways since their father's death.

High Lord of the Night Court, Feyre's mate and her equal in rule, and one of the book's narrators. With the war won he spends the winter tending to what it cost: calling on the families of soldiers who did not come home, holding together a peace between courts that were recently enemies, and watching the Illyrian war camps for signs of trouble. He keeps most of his own grief and exhaustion behind the composure his people expect of him.

The Illyrian commander of the Night Court's armies and one of the book's narrators. He spends the winter in the mountain war camps, pushing a proud and resentful people to accept the changes the war forced on them and arguing that Illyrian girls should be allowed to train and fly. He is also drawn, against his own better judgement, toward Nesta Archeron, who wants nothing from him or anyone else.

Rhysand's cousin, third in command of the Night Court and its emissary to the other courts, and one of the book's narrators. Warm and unshakably loyal in company, she is far less settled in her own chapters: she carries the weight of the family she came from, an old and ugly history with the Autumn Court, and a truth about herself she has told almost no one.

Feyre's eldest sister, forced into the Cauldron during the war and remade as High Fae against her will. Since then she has cut herself off from the family entirely, living alone in a rented apartment in Velaris, drinking through the Night Court's money and turning away everyone who comes to her door. She holds herself responsible for their father's death and treats anyone who tries to help, Cassian above all, as an enemy.

Feyre's middle sister, also remade by the Cauldron. Quieter than Nesta and outwardly settled, she keeps to the house and its gardens and plans what she will plant come spring. She avoids the subject of Lucien, to whom she is tied by a mating bond she never asked for, and says little about the visions that came with her new nature.

The Night Court's spymaster, a winged Illyrian shadowsinger who says little and misses nothing. He spends the winter gathering reports from the human lands and the other courts, and quietly spends more of his time near Elain than he will admit to.

Rhysand's second in command, an ancient being now housed permanently in a High Fae body after the war stripped away what she used to be. Blunt, imperious and fond of jewels, she is adjusting to a smaller and more mortal-scaled life, and to the attentions of Varian of the Summer Court.

A red-haired lord of Autumn Court birth with a mechanical golden eye, now serving as an emissary to the human lands, where he spends most of his time alongside Jurian and the cursed queen Vassa. He comes north rarely and briefly: Elain is his mate, she will not have him, and he has stopped pressing the matter.

An Illyrian woman who runs the supply shop in the Windhaven war camp, having taken it over after her father's death. Her wings were clipped when she was young, so she cannot fly, and she has built a hard, self-sufficient life in a place with little use for a female shopkeeper. Cassian counts her among the few allies he has in the camps.
