Feyre's eldest sister and the book's central narrator. Thrown into the Cauldron during the war with Hybern and remade as High Fae against her will, she took something from it on the way in and has never come to terms with either fact. In the year since she has isolated herself in Velaris, drinking, spending the Night Court's money and refusing every hand held out to her. She holds herself responsible for their father's death. Sharp, proud, and deliberately cruel when she is cornered.

The Illyrian-born commander of the Night Court's armies and the book's second narrator. Blunt, warm and stubborn, he runs the war camps and their recruits and has spent years arguing that Illyrian females should be allowed to train. He has also been unable to leave Nesta Archeron alone, despite her doing everything she can think of to drive him off.

The youngest Archeron sister, High Lady of the Night Court, and the sibling Nesta most resents. Settled now into her rule and her marriage to Rhysand, she has run out of patience with Nesta's self-destruction and agrees to force the question.

High Lord of the Night Court and Feyre's mate. He tolerates Nesta for his wife's sake and no further; it is his money she has been spending and his city she has been wrecking herself in. Beneath the control he shows his court, he is protective of the people he loves to the point of ruthlessness.

Rhysand's second in command, an ancient being confined to a High Fae body since the war stripped away what she was. She came nearest to being Nesta's friend and is now the harshest voice in the room against her, unwilling to soften a word.

The middle Archeron sister, remade by the Cauldron alongside Nesta. Gentle and outwardly settled, she has found a place in the Night Court's household that Nesta cannot, which is its own quiet wound between them. She keeps avoiding Lucien, the mate she never chose.

Rhysand's cousin, third in command of the Night Court and its emissary abroad. Openly hostile to anything that hurts Feyre, and with little sympathy left for Nesta.

The Night Court's shadowsinger and spymaster, quiet and watchful. He works with Cassian on the threats gathering outside Prythian and keeps his own feelings, including those about Elain, to himself.

The high priestess who runs the great library beneath the House of Wind, a sanctuary and workplace for women who have survived violence. Her hands were ruined long ago and she communicates in writing, with help. She sets Nesta to work shelving books and judges her on nothing but the work.

A half-Fae priestess working in the library, a survivor of Hybern's attack on her temple who has not gone above ground since she arrived. Bright, curious and quick with a joke in spite of everything, she is the first person in the library to treat Nesta as ordinary company. She also has a remarkable singing voice.

An Illyrian woman who runs the supply store in the Windhaven war camp, her wings clipped when she was a girl so that she can never fly. Dry, tough and without illusions about her own people, she is one of the few Illyrians who welcomes Cassian's push to let females train.

The Night Court's residence on the mountaintop above Velaris, ten thousand steps up from the city, where Nesta is sent to live and train and where the great library lies beneath. It proves to be more than a building: it anticipates what she needs, producing food, clothing and books unasked, and becomes a kind of company.

The eldest son and heir of the Autumn Court's High Lord, and the face that court presents in its dealings with the Night Court. Cold, precise and widely considered untrustworthy, he keeps a private arrangement with Rhysand and parts with information strictly on his own terms. He also has an ugly history with Morrigan that nobody in the Night Court has forgotten.

A mortal queen who was carried into the Cauldron during the war and came out of it changed, holding power that was never hers. Bitter and vengeful, she wants the Cauldron-made objects scattered across the world and will bargain with far worse things than herself to get them.

An ancient death-lord bound to a lake on the mortal continent. He cannot leave it, but he reaches a long way beyond it through the bargains he makes and the people he holds, among them the cursed queen Vassa. He works patiently and through others.
