Rand's luck-blessed friend, a brilliant reluctant general carrying dead men's memories of war, a Power-turning medallion, and a black-hafted spear. Sent on the Dragon's errands, he grumbles at every turn while proving uncannily good at surviving, and at winning, the trouble fate keeps handing him.

Rand's steady friend, a wolfbrother and lord of the Two Rivers, wed to Faile and serving at the Dragon's side. Deliberate and loyal, he grows uneasy at how cold and dangerous Rand has become, and torn between duty to his friend and to his wife.

A legendary Aes Sedai of fearsome reputation and great age, long thought retired, who reappears with designs of her own concerning the Dragon Reborn and the young men who channel. Blunt, imperious, and cleverer than nearly anyone around her, she is accustomed to bending others to her will without apology.

One of the Forsaken, the Dark One's ancient champions, a proud and ruthless war-captain who has seized rule of the nation of Illian under a false name. Jealous of standing among his own kind and contemptuous of the upstart Dragon Reborn, he schemes against Rand from his stronghold.
