He shelters in an abandoned mausoleum, receives stolen food from a raven, and can see and speak with the spirits of people buried nearby. Long separation from ordinary society has made him fearful of leaving, even as he serves as patient witness and guide to the newly dead.

A talking raven who supplies Rebeck with food taken from the world outside the cemetery. Practical, argumentative, and unsentimental, the bird is Rebeck's link to ordinary life and repeatedly challenges the stories Rebeck tells himself about safety, loneliness, and human nature.

A recently dead man whose ghost becomes aware in Yorkchester Cemetery. Confused by death and troubled by the gradual weakening of memory and sensation, he turns to Rebeck for explanations that Rebeck cannot always provide. His arrival gives Rebeck a new companion and makes the cemetery's slow process of forgetting immediately personal.

A newly buried woman whose spirit joins Rebeck and Michael in the cemetery. She is intelligent, direct, and unwilling to accept Rebeck's assumptions about what the dead can feel or become. Though her memories are already subject to the erosion that affects all the ghosts, her presence draws Michael out of his isolation.

A widow who regularly visits her husband's grave and discovers Rebeck living among the tombs. Blunt, sociable, and persistent, she responds to his strange circumstances with concern rather than fear. Her visits begin to reconnect him with food, conversation, and the possibility of a life beyond the cemetery gates.
