In short (whole book)
Sebastien begins the term under official scrutiny while preparing to break the sympathetic link authorities can use against the Raven Queen. A High Crown operation instead abducts her with children and faction allies, hoping the captives will draw the Raven Queen into a trap. She escapes sensory deprivation, turns two guards, rescues the prisoners, and leads them out, though Parker is captured and later dies. While recovering, she learns that five Merton journals may exist and that one may describe converting beast cores into solarium as natural supplies fail. Oliver admits stealing that journal, fracturing their alliance, while Sebastien eventually opens her own. Her sleep-proxy research succeeds, Ennis escapes, and Damien joins a cautious investigation into Red Guard abuses. A Red Guard contest ends when the being sealed in Sebastien's memory takes control of her detached shadow. Thaddeus Lacer becomes her tentative intermediary and returns her mother's ring. She and Oliver restore limited cooperation, but the Architects' Osham operation and an uncontrolled faith in the Raven Queen remain open.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Sebastien Siverling established herself as a gifted university thaumaturge while concealing dangerous private work behind several identities. She studies under Thaddeus Lacer and relies on Damien Westbay as a friend and classmate, though Damien does not know the full nature of her secrets. Oliver Dryden protects her invented background and serves as a covert ally, but his political interests make complete trust impossible. Liza works with Sebastien on difficult magical research under similarly guarded terms. Tanya Canelo is entangled with the Architects of Khronos, while Sebastien's father, Ennis Nott, remains imprisoned. Beyond the university, the wanted Raven Queen has become important to the Verdant Stag and Nightmare Pack and remains the target of persistent official investigations. Sebastien also possesses an inaccessible journal recovered from Merton's hermitage. Its changing glyphs have resisted ordinary attempts to read it, leaving both its contents and its connection to wider conflicts unknown.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
Thaddeus Lacer joins a protected university effort to unlock archaeological material while seeking contact with the Raven Queen. At the university, Sebastien leads a defensive practical across a simulated city. When she casts through Damien's conduit against her calf, faculty mistake the technique for flesh-casting and halt the examination. Lacer verifies that the difficult method is legitimate, clearing her of an imminent aberrance event. Sebastien then earns exceptional recognition for a complex exhibition and is formally accepted as Lacer's apprentice, though he identifies a weakness in her darkness-focused transmogrification. Official attention remains a separate danger. An investigator questions Damien about Sebastien's connection to Oliver, and Sebastien preserves her cover by supporting Damien's mistaken theory about a secret organization. She asks Damien to compare decades of rogue-magic and Red Guard records for suspicious discrepancies. She also decides to seek a surviving member of the Black Wastes expedition at Willowdale, hoping for a new path toward understanding the journal recovered from Merton's hermitage.
Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)
Sebastien fails to decrypt the hidden journal and grows more suspicious of Oliver, whose fabricated history for her has attracted Titus Westbay's investigation. Oliver says the cover still holds, but its invented past needs reinforcement. Sebastien chooses to meet Titus directly rather than wait for him to uncover inconsistencies. Under her alternate identities, she also arranges a letter to the High Crown and bargains with Gera for delivery and a future public distraction, promising a sleep-transfer spell for Millennium in return. With Liza, she begins human trials of a raven-based sleep proxy and plans to destroy the blood sample used by the Coppers to locate the Raven Queen. The operation is meant to coincide with Ennis Nott's sentencing. Sebastien's first-term results are strong, and Lacer helps her select and translate a demanding restorative spell. Her attempt at negotiation fails when the High Crown publicly promises the Raven Queen's capture and execution. Still needing money and assistance, Sebastien develops a selective darkness product, approaches Tanya Canelo for covert work, and begins her meeting with Titus while keeping her larger plan concealed.
Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)
Titus acknowledges that he overread the evidence around Sebastien after she pushes him to help a starving orphan, though she intends to avoid him afterward. Sebastien restricts her own access to a substance she fears she depends on, then recruits Tanya to impersonate the Raven Queen from a distance during the sentencing operation. Lacer's work reveals that the protected journals respond to identity and sequences of concepts rather than ordinary ciphers. Sebastien discovers that she can maintain two separate magical wills, passes the journal's two-concept test, and names her counter-scrying plan Operation Palimpsest. She also learns a restorative light technique and locates the recovering expedition survivor at Willowdale, where Liza has an unexplained treatment role. On the sentencing day, Tanya arrives injured after an Architects of Khronos mission lost a dangerous shipment to a military team. Siobhan heals her and proceeds with the plan, but suspects the Coppers have placed a broad compulsion over the city to draw in the Raven Queen. Before she reaches Liza's protection, a Copper stops her in the street.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
Millennium helps Siobhan escape the Copper's scrutiny, but Pendragon operatives use him as bait and capture their group with a stun trap. The kidnappers take Siobhan, Millennium, Theo, and members of the Nightmare Pack and Verdant Stag to an underground prison under complete sensory deprivation. Siobhan uses her active will to regain limited awareness, adapts her shadow familiar into a substitute sense, and escapes the deprivation array. Meanwhile, the planned mass of ravens draws the official force away from Ennis's sentencing. Inside the complex, Siobhan frees the other captives but is badly injured by a radiant explosive and confined in a bright cell. Recognizing that concussion and will strain are impairing her judgment, she abandons a reckless escape attempt. Instead, she frightens two guards into bargaining. They agree to neutralize their loyalty vows and help her in exchange for personal boons. The defectors release the prisoners, recover their equipment, and destroy stored blood and hair that could be used for tracking. With reinforcements approaching, Siobhan covers the group in darkness and leads them into an uncertain tunnel route.
Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)
Siobhan repairs Enforcer Turner's shattered leg well enough for travel and extends her anti-divination shadow over the fugitives. Anders and Parker, the two defectors, guide the group toward a gulf ferry station. They steal a boat and disable a pursuing vessel, but Parker is harpooned and pulled into Pendragon custody. Thaddeus secretly helps the remaining escapees by killing two pursuers and damaging their boat while concealing his intervention from the authorities. The survivors reach a warded arena, where Liza confirms that the planned operation destroyed the Coppers' usable blood sample. Siobhan is left with serious injuries and will strain. The rescued factions arrange protection while Katerine and Gera treat the kidnapping as an act of war against their families. Siobhan refuses immediate retaliation but asks them to protect the survivors and help honor the boons she promised. Deidre Johnson begins gathering accounts that strengthen the Raven Queen's supernatural reputation. At court, the High Crown confirms that the children were taken to pressure allied factions and lure the Raven Queen. Thaddeus realizes Sebastien was also an intended hostage, while the shadow's unexplained effect on Jorgensen deepens official fear.
Story so far - through chapter 44 (this book)
While recovering, Siobhan accepts that an unknown presence is sealed within her mind and contacts Thaddeus for information about consciousness held inside memory. Parker is tortured in Crown custody and later dies, leaving Siobhan determined to protect his family. The other abductees and their relatives are successfully hidden or relocated. At Willowdale, Siobhan meets Edgar, the recovering Black Wastes archaeologist. He says the expedition found five Merton journals rather than four and believes a missing volume could be important enough to cause conflict with Osham. Sebastien begins a ritual intended to create an untraceable guiding symbol, but fears its language may be influenced by the sealed presence. She gives Damien a limited account of the abduction, and he accepts that the High Crown committed atrocities while continuing their records research. The new university term begins with Tanya serving as Lacer's student aide. Lacer explains that transmogrification depends on shared cultural associations, revealing why Sebastien's literal thinking has impaired her casting. She learns how to work with that principle, but also discovers that the Red Guard has opened an investigation into whether the Raven Queen poses an exceptional threat.
Story so far - through chapter 53 (this book)
Sebastien masters output detachment and improves her troubled transmogrification, then confronts Grandmaster Kiernan. He says the Architects of Khronos seek a journal describing how to convert beast cores into solarium because the mines may fail within a decade. Edgar's report of a fifth journal changes the search. Oliver then admits that he arranged the theft of one Merton journal, while Sebastien reveals that she holds another. She accuses him of benefiting from her stolen-book crisis, and their friendship collapses into a pact of mutual secrecy. Sebastien builds independent housing, communications, identities, and warded storage. The Nightmare Pack relocates vulnerable survivors and Parker's family, while Siobhan and Liza use nonlethal vitality transfers to greatly improve Anders's dying dog. Anna confirms that she independently forged her father's signature to block Oliver's contract. Sebastien tells Lacer that she is Siobhan and the Raven Queen and can split her will. Damien commits to cautious research into suspected Red Guard abuses. Liza's raven sleep proxy succeeds, giving Siobhan sustained rest, and Ennis escapes his labor camp. Kiernan and Lacer offer conditional journal cooperation. At last, Sebastien passes the final glyph test and opens her previously unreadable journal.
Story so far - through chapter 61 (this book)
Merton's journal proves difficult to read even after opening, though it records self-charging artifacts and related lost techniques. The Architects stage a false Raven Queen sighting in Silva Erde, then Tanya warns that one of their teams plans to abduct people in Osham. Oliver tries to contact Kiernan, but no reply arrives. During a renewed sleep-proxy period, a masked Red Guard agent traps Siobhan in a space distorted by supernatural rain and offers a lethal timed contest. The agent's aberrant flesh glove cuts both matter and magical connections, and hidden binding magic turns Siobhan's attacks into worsening cold backlash. When her detached shadow becomes autonomous, the being sealed in her memory uses it to confront the Red Guard and force her escape. The being then withdraws, leaving Siobhan aware that added power and separation from the seal can give it an opening. She seeks help from Thaddeus. He returns her mother's genuine solarium ring, admits replacing it with a dangerous flawed ring, and agrees to serve as her Red Guard intermediary. At Theo's birthday, Sebastien and Oliver restore a guarded alliance based on mutual secrets. Kiernan and the Osham targets remain missing from contact, while organized worship of the Raven Queen spreads beyond Siobhan's control.
How does it end? (ending)
Sebastien survives the High Crown's hostage operation and a Red Guard contest, but both conflicts leave lasting exposure. She keeps her identities separate from the public, acquires a private home and warded resources, opens Merton's journal, and gains the effective raven sleep proxy. Thaddeus Lacer returns her mother's genuine ring and agrees to represent her interests within the Red Guard, while remaining unaware that the being sealed in her memory briefly controlled her detached shadow. Oliver retains a different journal, and their damaged partnership resumes on guarded, more equal terms. Damien continues investigating suppressed Red Guard conduct without knowing Sebastien is the Raven Queen. Liza, Anna, the Nightmare Pack, and the Verdant Stag survivors remain allies with separate obligations. Ennis is free but missing, Edgar has vanished, Parker is dead, and Parker's family has been relocated. Kiernan has stopped answering while an Architects of Khronos team threatens people in Osham. The solarium shortage, the missing fifth journal, the sealed being, Red Guard attention, and the Raven Queen's expanding organized worship all remain unresolved.
