A Hero's Guide to Deadly Dragons characters

By Cressida Cowell

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Hiccup Horrendous Haddock III (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

The small, bookish heir of the Hairy Hooligans. Hiccup is poor at the loud parts of Viking life but can speak Dragonese, thinks carefully in a crisis and has survived several adventures by doing what nobody expects.

Toothless (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Hiccup's tiny, selfish and frequently troublesome dragon. Toothless has no respect for books, rules or Hiccup's plans, although he does not like anyone else threatening his human.

Fishlegs (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Hiccup's loyal, nervous friend, short-sighted and allergic to reptiles. Fishlegs shares Hiccup's low place in the training class and understands how badly an important test can go.

Camicazi (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

Hiccup's Bog-Burglar friend, a bold and highly skilled thief. A forbidden building full of traps and locked doors sounds to Camicazi like a promising expedition.

Stoick the Vast (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Chief of the Hairy Hooligans and Hiccup's father. Stoick wants to be proud of his son but still measures heroism by the noisy standards of an old-fashioned Viking chief.

Gobber the Belch (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The Hooligans' huge teacher and examiner, responsible for a training programme in which failure is painful and the instructions are generally shouted.

Snotface Snotlout (Antagonist)

Also known as Snotlout

Appears from the start

Hiccup's boastful cousin and chief rival. Snotlout is strong, confident and ready to make sure everyone notices any part of the pirate test that Hiccup gets wrong.

Big-Boobied Bertha (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

Chief of the Bog-Burglars and Camicazi's mother, famous for her size, force of personality and valuable collection of stolen objects.

the Hairy Scary Librarian (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 8

The terrifying guardian of the Meathead Public Library. He treats an overdue or stolen book as a serious crime and has dragons, rules and traps to enforce his authority.

Driller-Dragons (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 9

Dragons used to tunnel through the library's stonework and hunt intruders. Their ability to come through walls makes hiding among the shelves much harder.

Old Wrinkly (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

Hiccup's elderly grandfather and the Hooligans' soothsayer, a source of advice about old stories, unlikely signs and the parts of history other Vikings ignore.
