Previously: Siobhan entered Gilbratha carrying a stolen magical book and became wanted by the authorities. A transformation allowed her to attend the university as the male student Sebastien Siverling, where Thaddeus Lacer selected her as his apprentice. Outside the university, she became entangled with Oliver Dryden and the Verdant Stag, accumulating debt while building a formidable public reputation as the Raven Queen. Her effort to learn who was pursuing the stolen book drew in classmates Damien Westbay and Newton Moore, while Tanya Canelo served as a constrained link to the university faction behind the search. The conflict culminated in a rogue-magic disaster on Rafton Street. Newton died and became an aberrant, leaving Sebastien traumatized and magically prevented from explaining key events. The Red Guard removes the two captured aberrants from Gilbratha while investigators debate whether the Raven Queen is an exceptional criminal or something more dangerous. Photographer Percival Irving supplies him with an image of police violence and a distant picture of the Raven Queen, then accepts a role in Oliver's planned press operation. Siobhan obtains a stimulant to fight her dangerous exhaustion and discovers that a sealed fragment of Newton's aberrant form has remained caught in her clothing. She keeps it hidden. By the end of this span, Sebastien has ranked her main threats and makes neutralizing the authorities' blood sample a priority.

Masked attackers ambush Oliver's prisoner convoy with military weapons, disabling filters, a powerful shield, and air magic. Siobhan uses long-range refraction to conceal Gerard as he reaches and kills the enemy air thaumaturge. Oliver survives a devastating blast, but his horse is killed, the convoy is broken, and a second enemy force arrives by canal.
