Previously: Wu Ying returned to Verdant Green Waters carrying the consequences of an unplanned medicinal bath. He earns them by selling herbs, teaching garden care, and restoring the host sect's neglected spiritual plots. Meanwhile, his heightened senses detect the familiar mark of Dark Sect corruption in the city. Tou He contacts an honorary monk elder, who agrees to watch discreetly, but the group lacks proof of an active threat. Wu Ying's pursuit of the taint leads him to attack a visiting cultivator in a bathhouse. She is not an operative but a victim of cultivation aids sold through respectable channels. The products conceal dependence and damage their users' cultivation, and she has come to the host sect for treatment. Wu Ying is held responsible for the intrusion and owes her later recompense. In desperation, Wu Ying releases the mixed chi he had kept partitioned inside himself. Five Winds Body reveals its true principle: the different forms of chi must be balanced rather than purged. The method begins repairing and strengthening him. The Whistling Iron Monkey cultivators prove willing to oppose the Dark Sect and join a surveillance plan. The noblewoman warns Wu Ying to abandon the inquiry, then hidden fighters ambush Wu Ying, Tou He, and their former wandering companion as a larger force attacks the tower. Disabled defenses and missing reinforcements reveal help from traitors inside the host sect. Wu Ying and Tou He survive the rooftop battle with severe injuries and enter the devastated tower with their allies. In the upper library, Wu Ying distracts a hostile Core cultivator long enough for the poisoned formation elder to destroy the enemy's core, though the same strike shatters Wu Ying's bones and knocks him unconscious.

The attack on the host sect fails, but the tower and library suffer extensive damage and many defenders are lost. Wu Ying, Tou He, their former wandering companion, the Whistling Iron Monkey allies, and the library defenders hold long enough for the wounded formation elder to destroy a hostile Core cultivator's core.
