The ninth book of A Thousand Li follows Long Wu Ying, now a Core Formation cultivator of Verdant Green Waters, as he travels south with a young, powerful but inexperienced wood-cultivator companion to investigate reports of corrupted beast stones disrupting trade. Testing the wits and caution of the companion he reluctantly agreed to guide, Wu Ying gathers herbs, trades goods, and follows a trail of leads through auction houses and merchant contacts toward a walled city where he senses a spreading, unnatural taint. There he reunites with his old friend Tou He, and the two prepare to hunt the tainted beasts responsible for the region's growing crisis.
