A sequence of murders traps the contestants inside the grounds. Liu Jin and Investigator Chu are among the dead, while evidence increasingly points to an advanced insider. Wu Ying draws out Elder Cao, who admits that she created the violence for Zhao to discredit independent gatherings. Wu Ying and two elders bring her close to defeat, and Liu Ping kills her in an uncontrolled bloodline state to avenge her brother. The White Flower Merchant Association then recruits openly for resistance, while the guard captain stays to report the truth. Recovering from the battle, Wu Ying leaves Zhao for the west with Liu Ping and the Pan sisters.

Previously: Wu Ying's path through Verdant Green Waters and war left his martial family divided by loss and concealment. His sword master, Elder Cheng, was poisoned and placed in hidden meditation beneath the cover of an apparent burial. Fa Yuan withdrew into mourning, while Tou He survived his damaged cultivation and reached Core Formation. Wu Ying remains affiliated with his sect but is barred from its lands. Travelling alone, he seeks a way to form his own core without committing to an unstable understanding of his Dao. A powerful forest spirit beast confirms that his awakened bloodline is that of a wind dragon and directs him toward the place where seven winds meet. After further wandering and conflict drive him out of Shen, Wu Ying crosses into Zhao. Insight at the border allows him to compress his wind qi into an unusual Core Formation core, though the result is fragile and must be stabilized. Wandering cultivators led by companions Liu Ping and Liu Jin find him after the breakthrough. Wu Ying hides his true level and joins them on the road to a Seven Pavilions tournament, entering a kingdom where the army tightly regulates cultivators, techniques, and valuable resources.

So far this book: At the Seven Pavilions tournament village, Wu Ying registers under the name Expert Long and tries to keep his sect history and new cultivation level quiet. Visiting disciples from Crimson Flowers and Mountain Fast nevertheless notice his precise aura control. A long spear spar with Pan Shui deepens his understanding of weapon mastery, while two sect elders recognize both his identity as the Verdant Gatherer and the weakness of his recently formed wind core. Elder Huang offers future library access in exchange for gathered materials. The gathering changes when a Mountain Fast disciple is found murdered. Investigator Chu's physical examination points toward a right-handed jian user, and the closed grounds make Wu Ying vulnerable because he had argued with the victim. A hostile blood painting suggests dark methods, but he warns that it could be staged evidence. Investigator Chu clears the initial suspects and starts reconstructing their movements. The finalists continue competing and attend a Seven Pavilions dinner, where Wu Ying also arranges to acquire a saint-tier jian by helping a metal body cultivator. Before Chu can explain a new discovery that still requires confirmation, she is killed inside the guarded headquarters. The destroyed confinement formation releases the gathering. The White Flower Merchant Association declares its resistance openly and leaves with new recruits. The guard captain releases guards who do not wish to remain, then stays with several loyal officers to submit a truthful report despite the expected danger from Zhao. Three days later, Liu Ping awakens, grieving but alive. She declines to follow the resistance leader immediately and accepts Pan Yin's invitation to travel west under the Pan clan's protection. Wu Ying, Liu Ping, Pan Shui, and Pan Yin leave Zhao together, while the state's response and the purpose of its vast formations remain unknown.

Elder Cao's scheme ends when Wu Ying and two visiting sect elders wear down her defenses and Liu Ping, overtaken by grief and her unstable bloodline, kills her. Wu Ying identifies Cao as the person behind the murders, the fire, Liu Ping's abduction, and the effort to make independent tournaments and auctions appear unsafe. With the confinement formation destroyed, attendees are free to leave. The White Flower Merchant Association openly recruits for resistance to Zhao, but Liu Ping does not follow its leader.
