A Torch Against the Night recap

Laia, Elias, Izzi and Keenan flee Serra for Kauf prison in the far north to free Laia's brother Darin, hidden along the way by the Tribal trader Afya Ara-Nur. Elias is dying from a poison the Commandant gave him in the death cells, and Laia discovers she can vanish from sight when she is terrified. Behind them, Helene Aquilla, now Blood Shrike to the Emperor Marcus, is ordered to hunt Elias down with her family's lives as surety; she discovers a healing magic of her own and evidence that the Commandant is conspiring with something inhuman. At Kauf, Elias is captured and tortured by the prison's Warden while Laia finds her brother alive but broken. Helene reaches the prison, cannot bring herself to finish her orders, and helps them escape as Kauf burns. Izzi is killed. To save Elias's life the jinn Shaeva binds him to the Waiting Place as the next Soul Catcher, which means he can never leave it. Laia takes Darin south, and Keenan asks for her mother's armlet as a token of trust. When she gives it to him he reveals himself as the Nightbringer, the ancient jinn who has been collecting the pieces of the Star for a thousand years.

Previously: in the Martial Empire, where the conquered Scholars are kept enslaved and forbidden to read, a Scholar girl named Laia watched soldiers kill her grandparents and take her brother Darin for the drawings of Martial weapons hidden in his room. Serra's Scholar resistance agreed to free Darin if she spied on the commandant of Blackcliff Military Academy, so Laia went into the household of Keris Veturia as a slave. At Blackcliff, Elias Veturius, the Academy's best student and the Commandant's unacknowledged son, was days from deserting when the Empire's Augurs announced that the imperial line had failed and named him one of four Aspirants who must compete in supernatural Trials for the throne, alongside his closest friend Helene Aquilla and the twins Marcus and Zak Farrar. The Trials killed several of Elias's friends. Laia learned that Darin had been apprenticed in secret to a Martial swordsmith so that Scholars might learn to make steel, that the resistance leader Mazen had sold her to the Commandant, and that her brother was alive in Kauf prison. The final Trial ordered each Aspirant to kill the person they loved most: Marcus killed his twin and took the throne, Helene refused and was bound to him as Blood Shrike, and Elias was condemned. Laia, the slave girl Izzi, the resistance fighter Keenan and the Blackcliff cook broke him out, and the four fugitives fled Serra for the north.

Elias, Laia, Izzi and Keenan escape Serra through the catacombs with the city sealed and Martial soldiers behind them. Elias fights their way clear at a cost, and afterwards begins to sicken in a way that has nothing to do with his wounds. In the capital, Helene Aquilla is sworn in as Blood Shrike to the new Emperor Marcus, who makes the terms plain: she is to hunt Elias down and return proof of his death, and her parents and two sisters will answer for any failure or delay. She is also to find out who has been teaching Scholars to make Martial steel. Marcus attaches to her a Mask named Avitas Harper, whom she is certain reports to the Commandant, and she takes her Blackcliff classmate Dex with her as the only man in the detachment she trusts. Keris Veturia, meanwhile, has survived the change of emperors untouched and is manoeuvring at court with an ally no one can name.

The fugitives get clear of Serra and head north across the Empire, moving between Tribal camps and back roads. Elias's illness sharpens into something recognisable: he was poisoned in the death cells at his mother's direction, and it is killing him by degrees. Laia discovers that when she is frightened enough she can vanish from sight altogether, a magic she has no idea how to control or explain. Keenan, who has taken charge of their route, grows steadily closer to her. Behind them the Blood Shrike works the same road, questioning everyone Elias might have turned to. To do it she must use methods she was trained in and has never had to apply to people who are not soldiers, and Marcus's messages make it clear that mercy will be paid for by her sisters.

The party reaches Tribe Nur and its Zaldara, Afya Ara-Nur, who owes Elias a life debt and settles it by concealing them in her caravan under cover of a wedding train, at enormous risk to her people. The arrangement holds only as long as nobody talks. Helene, tracking Elias through his Tribal connections, takes his adoptive mother Mamie Rila and her household into custody and interrogates them on the Emperor's orders, which costs her more than she expected and yields the direction the caravan has gone. Along the way she discovers that she can slow a wound's bleeding and mend broken flesh by singing, a healing magic no Martial is supposed to possess and which she keeps hidden from Harper and from the court. Elias is now visibly failing, and Laia is making decisions about the party's route that she once would have deferred to him.

The route north takes the fugitives to the edge of the Waiting Place, the forest where the dead linger before they pass on, and the Tribes will not enter it. Elias, whose fever is now nearly constant, meets its keeper: Shaeva, the Soul Catcher, an immortal jinn condemned to ferry ghosts alone for centuries as the price of a betrayal she committed against her own kind. She tells him plainly that the poison in him is beyond her ability to cure and that he has weeks, not months. She also tells him what the Waiting Place is holding: the jinn imprisoned by the Scholars long ago, and the one jinn who escaped that prison, the Nightbringer, who has spent a thousand years assembling the fragments of an object called the Star in order to free them. Elias keeps the timetable of his own death from Laia and pushes the party on toward Kauf.

They reach Kauf, a prison built into the northern mountains from which no Scholar has ever been released. Elias's plan turns on getting himself inside, and the plan does not survive contact: he is taken by the guards and delivered to the Warden, a Mask who tortures methodically and without heat, keeps notes, and has been working on Darin for months in order to extract the secret of Serric steel. Laia gets into the prison herself, using her ability to disappear, and finds her brother alive but reduced to almost nothing. Helene arrives at Kauf with her detachment, expecting to collect a corpse and finding instead that the Warden intends to hand her a broken man and take the credit. What she is required to do and what she can bear to do stop matching.

Inside Kauf, Elias endures the Warden's attention while Laia works to get Darin and the other Scholar prisoners out. Elias and Helene finally face each other with her orders between them, and she cannot carry them out; she chooses instead to give him the opening he needs, knowing what the lie will cost her at home. The Warden's interest in Elias turns out to be personal as well as professional, and the fact that Elias is already dying of poison shortens every calculation. The escape plan expands from three fugitives to the whole prison population, because Elias will not leave hundreds of Scholars behind for the Empire's use. Laia's magic is unreliable, Darin can barely walk, and the fires they intend to set will bring every soldier in the north down on them.

Kauf burns. The Scholar prisoners are freed and driven north across the river, pursued by the garrison, and the escape is paid for: Izzi is killed, and Elias, already at the end of the poison's course, uses what strength he has left to hold the crossing. Helene lets the fugitives go and returns south with an account of events that will satisfy the Emperor without condemning her family. Darin, mute and hollowed out by what was done to him in the cells, begins to come back to himself in Laia's company. Elias collapses within reach of the Waiting Place. Shaeva offers the only remedy that exists: she can bind him to the forest and its work, which will keep him alive and will also mean he can never leave it for long. He accepts, and he and Laia part on those terms.

Elias takes up the Soul Catcher's work as Shaeva's heir, bound to the Waiting Place and to the ghosts that pass through it. Laia turns south with Darin and Keenan, intending to get her brother somewhere safe and then to fight the Empire properly. Keenan asks her for the silver armlet that belonged to her mother, as proof that she trusts him with everything. When she gives it to him he lets go of the shape he has worn for years and stands revealed as the Nightbringer, the ancient jinn who has been gathering the fragments of the Star for a thousand years in order to free his imprisoned kin. Laia's family, the resistance that betrayed her, and every choice that put the armlet in her keeping were part of a plan older than the Empire. In Antium, the Emperor Marcus binds the Blood Shrike closer by taking her sister Livia for his own, and the Commandant, the Nightbringer's ally, moves openly toward power.

Kauf burns and its Scholar prisoners are freed, but Izzi is killed in the escape and Elias is close to death from the Commandant's poison. Helene, having found him and been unable to finish her orders, lets him go and returns to Antium with a version of events that will keep her family alive. North of the prison, Shaeva saves Elias the only way left to her: she binds him to the Waiting Place as her heir. He will live, and he will never again be able to leave the forest for long. He and Laia part with that understood. Laia takes Darin south, meaning to get him to safety and then to fight. Keenan asks her to give him her mother's armlet as proof that she trusts him; when she does, he sheds the shape he has worn for years and reveals himself as the Nightbringer. The armlet was the last fragment of the Star he has spent a thousand years gathering, and every step of Laia's flight, including the resistance that betrayed her, has served his purpose. In Antium, Marcus tightens his grip on the Blood Shrike by binding her sister Livia to the throne, while the Commandant, the Nightbringer's ally, moves openly toward power. Laia is left with her brother, no armlet, no magic she can control, and the knowledge that the man she trusted most is the oldest enemy her people have.
