A Trail Through Time characters

By Jodi Taylor

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Madeleine Maxwell (Protagonist)

Also known as Max

Appears from the start

A St Mary's historian who has arrived in a version of her home where Leon Farrell is alive but she does not belong cleanly in the life remembered by the people around her. She must decide whether this second chance can be made real while temporal authorities treat her presence as a problem.

Leon Farrell (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Head of Technical at St Mary's and the Leon of the world in which Max now finds herself. Their reunion is genuine but complicated by the missing woman whose place Max appears to occupy and by the danger attached to Max's arrival.

Edward Bairstow (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Director of St Mary's, accustomed to defending the institute from threats that conventional authorities cannot understand. Max's anomalous position forces him to weigh institutional survival against loyalty to one of his historians.

Tim Peterson (Supporting)

Appears from the start

An experienced historian and one of Max's closest colleagues at St Mary's. His practical field sense makes him a valuable ally when Max and Leon's flight begins to intersect with the institute.

Ian Guthrie (Supporting)

Appears from the start

St Mary's senior security officer. Guthrie is responsible for protecting the institute even when the people approaching it include friends pursued by a force able to follow them through time.

Markham (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A resourceful member of Security whose loyalty to St Mary's is matched by a readiness to improvise. He remains useful when a temporal crisis reaches the grounds of the institute.

Mrs Partridge (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The administrator at the centre of St Mary's daily life. Mrs Partridge's composure and command of information are especially important when events no longer follow an ordinary chronological order.

Professor Rapson (Minor)

Appears from the start

A senior St Mary's scientist whose analysis supports field teams dealing with evidence and effects that cannot be explained outside the institute.

Doctor Foster (Minor)

Appears from the start

The St Mary's doctor responsible for treating the physical consequences of historical assignments and the strain placed on staff by repeated temporal emergencies.

Clive Ronan (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

A renegade traveller whose earlier attacks killed St Mary's personnel and made every unexplained temporal intervention suspect. At the opening he remains free and hostile, but Max has no certain knowledge of where or when he will act next.
