A View from the Bridge recap

Brooklyn longshoreman Eddie Carbone and his wife, Beatrice, shelter her undocumented Sicilian cousins Marco and Rodolpho. Eddie's orphaned niece Catherine falls in love with Rodolpho, provoking Eddie's possessiveness. He insists Rodolpho only wants citizenship and tries to discredit him, while lawyer Alfieri warns that there is no lawful basis for interference. Eddie finally reports the brothers to immigration officials. Marco identifies him as the informer, leaving Eddie shunned by the community. Although Catherine and Rodolpho prepare to marry and Marco is released on bail pending deportation, Eddie cannot accept the loss of his reputation. He confronts Marco with a knife outside the apartment. Marco turns the weapon during the struggle, and Eddie dies in Beatrice's arms, destroyed by the betrayal and violence his jealousy set in motion.

In Red Hook, Brooklyn, longshoreman Eddie Carbone lives with his wife, Beatrice, and their orphaned niece Catherine. Catherine has completed stenography training and receives a job offer, but Eddie is reluctant to let the seventeen-year-old enter the adult world. Beatrice's cousins Marco and Rodolpho arrive illegally from Sicily, and the Carbones hide them while they find dock work. Marco is reserved and supports a family abroad; the younger Rodolpho sings, cooks, sews, and quickly begins courting Catherine. Eddie grows hostile to the relationship, claiming Rodolpho wants only the citizenship marriage could bring. Beatrice sees that Eddie's protectiveness is excessive. Lawyer Alfieri tells Eddie that Rodolpho has broken no law and that informing on the immigrants would violate the community's deepest code. Eddie nevertheless keeps trying to prove Rodolpho unsuitable. During a tense display of boxing, Eddie hurts Rodolpho, after which Marco silently demonstrates his superior strength and warns Eddie through the gesture.

Catherine decides to marry Rodolpho. Eddie tries to persuade her that Rodolpho is not genuinely attracted to her, then returns drunk and finds the couple together. He kisses Catherine and forcibly kisses Rodolpho, intending to humiliate him and confirm his own suspicions. Catherine still chooses Rodolpho. Ignoring Alfieri's warning, Eddie telephones immigration officials. He then learns that two other undocumented men have been moved into the apartment above, widening the harm of his report. Officers arrest all four men. Marco publicly identifies Eddie as the informer, and the neighborhood turns away from him. Alfieri secures bail until the hearings; Rodolpho can remain by marrying Catherine, while Marco expects deportation. Although Marco promises not to attack Eddie, Eddie demands a public retraction to restore his name. On Catherine's wedding day Marco confronts him in the street. Eddie draws a knife, but Marco turns it against him in the struggle. Eddie dies in Beatrice's arms, calling for his wife, while Alfieri recognizes that the catastrophe grew from a passion Eddie could neither understand nor restrain.

After Eddie reports the undocumented immigrants, officers arrest Marco and Rodolpho, as well as two men hidden by another family. Catherine and Beatrice understand who betrayed them, and Marco publicly accuses Eddie, destroying the reputation Eddie hoped to protect. Alfieri arranges bail so Catherine and Rodolpho can marry, but Marco is released only after promising not to attack Eddie. On the wedding day Eddie refuses to attend and demands that Marco withdraw the accusation. Marco comes to the street, where Eddie advances on him with a knife. Marco turns the weapon back during their struggle, and Eddie is fatally wounded. Beatrice holds her dying husband as he calls for her. Catherine and Rodolpho are left to proceed with their marriage, Marco faces deportation, and Alfieri reflects on the destructive force of Eddie's unchecked passion.
