Jiran completes the Tier 4 Challenger arena, forms an ice aspect, reaches Tier 5, and gains Mana Venom before becoming stranded in a wasteland controlled by the parasitic Found. He defeats a Seeker vessel, alters the captives’ memories, and returns home to learn that the Church has seized Olive. Jiran, Mayalyn, Niya, Cameron, Lenton, and their allies infiltrate Sanctum as the cardinal launches a coup using branded Templari, hidden beasts, implanted white bones, and green corruption. Olive escapes with new blood-based powers, while Jiran and Lenton kill the cardinal. His death ends the undead truce and releases a Tier X beast. Jiran survives its corruption through Mana Transcendence and learns to cleanse other victims. Olive takes military command, Jiran proposes an allied battlefield academy, and he, Mayalyn, and Olive form a committed relationship. Two emperors rupture reality, and the fissure scatters them and three accompanying high Rankers, leaving one Ranker weakened in an unknown hostile jungle.

Previously: Jiran is bound to Madra and has grown into a leader among several allied peoples while accumulating obligations to protect them. Mayalyn is his partner, Niya is his cousin and a healer, and Olive is an Imperial princess and diviner whose political position connects the alliance to the Empire. Lenton has served as Jiran's instructor and mentor. The allied force has been fighting the Graymin, while Church forces and imperial interests create additional danger. Jiran also has unresolved connections to Daughter, a soul-linked presence, and to a powerful sponsor associated with the Challenger arenas.

Jiran awakens alone in a Tier 4 Challenger facility carrying dangerously high density. After surviving a corridor of lethal traps and Guardians, he chooses ice for his Quintessence Infusion. The Crucible places him in a blizzard inhabited by Frost Revenants that drain aura and resist his elemental attacks. He hides his aura with a suit, builds goggles to see through the storm, and selects a cave whose absolute stillness matches his ideal of cold. By opening his soul wall to the cave's frost, he completes the transformation and draws the cave's icy heart into his soul space. Away from the arena, Mayalyn and Olive help hold the damaged alliance line. Olive tells Mayalyn that she loves Jiran, and Mayalyn is willing to consider a shared relationship. Their forces remain pressed by the Graymin and other attackers while Jiran's fate is unknown.

The arena orders Jiran to exterminate the remaining Frost Revenants, but a regenerative anomaly assembled around formation-bones becomes the greater threat. Jiran learns to immobilize Revenants with his ice aspect and turns them against the construct. After the anomaly nearly destroys him, he isolates enough of its bones in mana-draining containers to prevent another reconstruction. He refuses to kill the surviving Revenants and successfully petitions the system to accept completion. Jiran finishes second behind Kane, advances to Tier 5, and gains Armament, the Cartography System, Pediamus, and Mana Venom. His sponsor then contacts him telepathically. She offers two favors for a confidential account of the hidden arena and summons him to a mandatory Psionic Tournament in roughly 104 days. Jiran does not accept the bargain, but intends to use the tournament to investigate the powers behind the arenas.

A teleportation node carries Jiran to a sealed temple in a three-sun wasteland, where pale crystal-bearing guards attack him. Pediamus reveals parasites controlling their bodies through their mana pools. The local civilization calls the parasites the Found and their hosts the Lost, presenting the takeover as voluntary union. Jiran interrogates Jed, then removes his parasite and discovers that Jed's own mind is dormant. The parasite cannot keep the body alive once separated, and Jed dies despite Jiran's attempt to save him. Meanwhile, the Found dispatch a Seeker captain aboard an experimental high-speed vessel to investigate Jiran's arrival. Stranded by the enormous cost of returning home, Jiran studies the guards' crystals, learns how their distortions project mana, and begins exploring ambient density as a possible source of the power he needs.

Jiran learns to use the Found crystals to convert ambient density into mana, awakening Armament as a large separate reserve. When the Seeker vessel attacks, he seizes its minefield, drains its exhaust, forces it down, and subdues the captain with Mana Venom. He hides the damaged vessel and its concentrated mana reserve beneath ancient ruins. Experiments on Doric and Tori show that Mana Venom can remove awareness of Jiran and prevent related memories from forming. Jiran applies the same protection to the Seeker, leaves the surviving captives at the temple, and uses the transport platform to return to the Valley of Melodies. Knife and Mayalyn explain that the allies retreated through his portals after attacks from both the Graymin and a southern Church army. Olive was captured. Jiran returns with new power and resources, but immediately redirects them toward recovering her.

The circumstances of Olive's capture become clear. During the Graymin battle, Lenton exhausted himself shielding Imperial Rankers from a devastating wave. The survivors returned to find the Imperial city ruined and Church forces threatening the remaining defenders with planted explosives. The Church seized Olive and coerced the depleted Rankers into accompanying them. In the valley, Jiran publicly confirms that Mortimer is his alias, removes a hostile general from command, and takes operational control of the Imperial contingent. Allied leaders place a large winged force under him, though he leaves it to defend the Timberlings. Niya, credited with reviving wounded allies, supplies charged Sanctuary crystals. Jiran also proposes a future portal-linked settlement for the coalition. With Mayalyn, Niya, Cameron, and the Imperial soldiers assembled, he makes Olive's rescue the immediate priority.

Olive remains confined by the cardinal, concealing a reserve of Jiran's mana while probing the seal on her room. Jiran upgrades Mayalyn, Niya, and Cameron's suits, giving them stronger defenses and specialized weapons. An ambush by two branded Tier IX attackers reveals a much larger nearby force, but the attackers escape. Jiran then returns nearly two hundred thousand Imperial soldiers to the Outlands under Colonel Ropeter. Their task is to draw attention without starting a conflict while Jiran's smaller group infiltrates Sanctum. The army receives ally-safe weapons and orders to retreat if the rescuers fail to return. Jiran closes the portals behind the deployment so the route cannot be used against the valley. The diversion is in place, but the branded force and Olive's exact location remain unresolved.

Daughter confirms that Olive is in Sanctum, though a barrier blocks precise divination. Mayalyn gives up her suit's flight system so her racial obfuscation can hide her while she scouts. Inside the city, Jiran meets Markhiss, a former bandit king investigating the Church. Markhiss says Silence secretly serves the Church and engineers disasters that leave children available for its Ascendancy Program. They confront Deacon Matthias, the emperor's eldest son and the cardinal's deputy. Under Mana Venom, Matthias reveals that the cardinal plans a parade declaring Church independence, supported by underground beast labyrinths and more than two hundred branded fighters raised from orphans, including twenty Tier IXs. Jiran incapacitates Matthias and erases both men's memories of his involvement. Separately, Mayalyn tracks Olive through a damaged cathedral toward a concealed penance chamber. She is close to the captive princess but blocked by a hidden route as Jiran prepares to draw the branded force away.

Mayalyn locates Olive beneath the cathedral and guides Niya and Cameron toward her. Niya destroys the Grandam Papal, forcing the hidden conflict into the open. Fifteen Tier IX Templari pin the group, but Jiran drains and contains them after discovering the Mana Confluence sigil embedded in his soul wall. Olive, imprisoned in a sensory-deprived restraint chamber, develops External Unification, concentrates her blood-based ability, and snaps a single ankle restraint, but remains injured and largely secured. Feylon Samris destroys a spectral green attacker and finds Olive’s five siblings implanted with white bones. He protects Mayalyn long enough for her to continue the rescue, then leaves to fight the cardinal's Templari. Across Sanctum, the Church releases labyrinth beasts and tries to blame the Rankers. Jiran turns himself into a mana ice body and destroys the invading beasts, only to be shattered by a Ranker who mistakes him for another monster. His physical state and survival are unresolved. Olive is not yet fully accounted for.

Jiran discovers that the Templari's implanted white bones regenerate them through green corruption. The taint briefly invades his own mana and retreats into the frozen heart in his soul space, leaving an unresolved threat inside him. Working with Lenton, he learns to cleanse the bones and destroy their blood anchors, making the Templari mortal. The cardinal enters the fight with an emperors' dagger and kills a renowned Imperial healer. Madra answers Jiran's call by consuming the dagger's formation, and Lenton kills the remaining Templari. Jiran confirms that Olive is alive among the evacuees. Lenton immobilizes the cardinal, Jiran strips away his corruption and implants, and Lenton executes him. The victory immediately breaks the undead truce. A Tier X corruption beast directs an overwhelming assault on Sanctum, so Lenton confronts it while Jiran holds a breached wall and converts purified undead mana into new reserves.

Jiran and Lenton burn much of the undead horde, but the Tier X beast rebuilds itself from corpses and strikes Jiran with corruptive lightning. Niya's healing worsens the infection. With his body and soul nearly lost, Jiran chooses Mana Transcendence, disintegrates, and reforms free of the corruption. Lenton drives the beast away but does not kill it. Jiran then uses Mana Venom to remove corruption from within Olive's injured brother's soul space and cleanse other victims. He also develops a controlled method for locating the taps of Cameron and Niya. Olive and Jiran kiss, and he, Olive, and Mayalyn enter a committed three-person relationship. At the post-battle council, Olive accepts command of the former Third Corps. Jiran rejects a general portal evacuation that could expose his allies, but wins backing for unified academies whose students will train under coalition protection. The Graymin, the absent emperors, the surviving undead beast, and Melania's unexplained terror at seeing Jiran remain open threats.

Far from Sanctum, two emperors and three high Rankers travel to confront a former ruler's active creation. The emperors explain that advancement to Tier 11 makes the world reject their presence and destabilizes its weave. Believing they can no longer remain safely, they entrust the empire's people to the Rankers and jointly rupture reality. The resulting fissure engulfs all five travelers and scatters them in darkness. One high Ranker awakens alone in an unfamiliar jungle where crushing conditions suppress her aura and physical strength. A spiked creature nearly kills her before a bipedal lizard kills it and then turns on her. The locations, identities, and survival of the other travelers are unknown. The empire is therefore left with its highest powers displaced, Olive taking military command, Jiran's coalition plans only beginning, and several external enemies still active.

Jiran and Lenton end the Sanctum coup by defeating the cardinal and the remaining Templari, but the cardinal’s death breaks the undead truce. A Tier X corruption beast attacks the city. Lenton drives it away, while Jiran survives its corruption by evolving Mana Transcendence and then develops a way to cleanse other victims. Olive takes command of the former Third Corps, and Jiran wins support for a battlefield academy defended by his allied peoples. Jiran, Mayalyn, and Olive commit to remaining together. Melania’s terror at seeing Jiran remains unexplained. In the epilogue, two emperors rupture reality because Tier 11 ascenders threaten the world’s weave. The fissure scatters them along with three accompanying high Rankers. One Ranker awakens alone, greatly weakened in a hostile jungle, while the identities, destinations, and survival of the others remain unknown.
