Sheltered, ambitious Tessa Young begins college expecting to remain devoted to her boyfriend Noah and the future planned by her mother. Her tattooed roommate Steph introduces her to Hardin Scott, a hostile but magnetic British student whose love of literature gives them unexpected common ground. Hardin insists that he is not suited to conventional commitment, yet he repeatedly intervenes in Tessa's choices and becomes jealous of Zed and other men. Tessa presses him for honesty and respect, while he reveals vulnerability only in brief intervals between angry confrontations. Their physical relationship advances along with their emotional dependence. Each reconciliation convinces Tessa that the tenderness Hardin shows in private is more truthful than his public cruelty, although his refusal to explain his history with the group continues to trouble her.

Tessa chooses Hardin despite her mother's fierce opposition. Carol threatens to withdraw support rather than watch her daughter abandon the safe path she had arranged, but Tessa begins making adult decisions independently. Through Ken's professional connections, she secures an internship at Vance Publishing, work that suits her academic interests and offers a future beyond campus. Their relationship becomes more serious in practice even when Hardin resists naming it. Tessa increasingly measures her plans around him, while he begins to make concessions that suggest he fears losing her.

At Vance Publishing, Tessa gains confidence in professional work and meets Trevor, a courteous colleague whose interest in her provokes Hardin. Hardin and Tessa move toward a shared domestic life, and an apartment offers privacy from the campus circle and from her mother's control. Hardin's mother Trish visits from England and welcomes Tessa, while family conversations disclose more of the fear and resentment that shaped Hardin. Tessa comes to believe that his capacity for trust is growing because of their relationship. Yet conflicts over Trevor, Zed, and Hardin's friends persist, and Tessa still has to demand basic openness from him. Their repeated reconciliations make the bond feel durable, but Hardin remains alarmingly anxious whenever the origins of their involvement are mentioned.

Tessa commits herself to the life she and Hardin are building, trusting that the pain of their early encounters has given way to mutual love. That belief collapses when Molly and the others reveal that Hardin originally pursued her as part of a wager. He had boasted that he could make the sheltered Tessa fall for him and take her virginity, and private evidence of their intimacy had been used to prove his success. Hardin acknowledges the origin of the scheme but says his feelings became real and that he tried to leave the bet behind. For Tessa, his later love cannot erase the fact that their first encounters and many of her most vulnerable decisions were manipulated for an audience. She leaves him despite his pleas. Landon offers support and believes Hardin's love is genuine, but Tessa remains separated from Hardin, devastated by the deception and unable to know which memories she can trust.

After Tessa has reorganized her life around Hardin, Molly and the others reveal that his pursuit of her began as a wager: Hardin claimed he could make the inexperienced, attached Tessa fall for him and sleep with him, and he supplied his friends with humiliating proof. Hardin insists that the bet stopped mattering once his feelings became genuine, but Tessa understands that many moments she treated as private were part of a contest known to the group. The discovery destroys her trust in both him and the friends who watched the relationship develop. She leaves Hardin despite his pleas and turns to Landon, who confirms that Hardin loves her but does not excuse what he did. Tessa is left devastated and unsure how much of the relationship was real, while Hardin is forced to face the consequences of building genuine attachment on calculated cruelty. Their separation closes the book without resolving their bond.
