In short (whole book)
Alice follows a talking White Rabbit down a hole and enters Wonderland, where food and drink repeatedly alter her size. As she searches for a way onward, she meets creatures who turn conversation, manners, and familiar sayings into nonsense: a questioning Caterpillar, the vanishing Cheshire Cat, and the Hatter's tea-party companions. She eventually reaches the Queen of Hearts's court, survives a chaotic croquet game, and attends the Knave of Hearts's trial for stealing some tarts. The trial becomes increasingly arbitrary, and Alice grows large enough to challenge the Queen and dismiss the court as a pack of cards. The cards fly at her, but she wakes beside her sister and understands that Wonderland was a dream.
Story so far - through chapter 1 (this book)
Alice is sitting outdoors with her sister when she notices a White Rabbit speaking to himself, wearing a waistcoat, and checking a watch. She follows him into a deep rabbit hole and lands in a long hall filled with locked doors. A tiny door offers a view of a beautiful garden, but Alice is too large to pass through it. A bottle makes her small enough for the doorway, though she has left the key on a high table. A cake then makes her grow far too tall, leaving her trapped and distressed in the hall.
Story so far - through chapter 2 (this book)
Alice's tears form a pool, and another change in size leaves her swimming in it with a Mouse and other animals. Once they reach dry ground, the creatures try several strange methods of getting warm. Their talk repeatedly goes wrong because words and stories do not work as Alice expects. The White Rabbit mistakes Alice for his servant and sends her to fetch items from his house. There she grows until she fills the building, then escapes after becoming small again and continues through the unfamiliar landscape.
Story so far - through chapter 4 (this book)
Alice meets a Caterpillar who presses her to explain who she is, a difficult question after so many changes. He tells her that different sides of his mushroom alter her height, allowing her to manage her size more deliberately. At the Duchess's disorderly house, a cook fills the air with pepper while the Duchess handles a howling baby. Alice carries the baby away, only to see it become a pig. The Cheshire Cat appears and disappears at will, tells Alice that everyone nearby is mad, and directs her toward the March Hare and the Hatter.
Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)
Alice joins the March Hare, the Hatter, and a sleepy Dormouse at a tea table where places are constantly changed but nothing is settled. The Hatter poses a riddle without an answer, and the guests explain that Time has stopped cooperating with them, leaving the party fixed at tea time. Their stories and rules become increasingly frustrating, so Alice leaves. Using the mushroom to reach the right height, she at last enters the garden she saw from the locked hall and encounters the court of the Queen of Hearts.
Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)
The Queen of Hearts brings Alice into a croquet game played with living equipment and governed mostly by the Queen's temper. Alice later hears the Mock Turtle's melancholy account of his schooling and watches more nonsensical performances before being summoned to court. The Knave of Hearts is on trial for stealing the Queen's tarts, but the witnesses and evidence do not establish a sensible case. As Alice grows, she becomes confident enough to challenge the court's confused procedures. When she dismisses everyone as playing cards, the pack flies at her. Alice wakes beside her sister, realizes that Wonderland was a dream, recounts it, and goes home for tea.
How does it end? (ending)
Alice reaches the royal court, where the Knave of Hearts is tried for stealing the Queen's tarts. The proceedings ignore consistent rules: witnesses offer little useful evidence, and the Queen wants punishment before a verdict. Alice, who has begun growing again, finally rejects the court's authority and says that its members are only playing cards. When the pack rises against her, she wakes beside her sister and realizes that the journey through Wonderland was a dream. She tells her sister about it and leaves for tea, returning to the ordinary world while her sister remains behind imagining the strange people and creatures Alice described.
