Alice (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A curious, self-possessed child who grows bored beside her sister and follows a talking rabbit down a hole. She tries to understand the strange hall she reaches by drawing on lessons and manners from home.

White Rabbit (Supporting)

Appears from the start

A talking, waistcoated rabbit whose anxious remarks about being late draw Alice underground. The sight of him consulting a pocket watch is so extraordinary that she follows without considering how she will return.

Mouse (Minor)

First appears in chapter 2

A wary creature Alice meets while swimming through the pool created by her tears. He can speak, but her efforts to address him are complicated by her repeated references to cats and dogs.

A solemn bird who takes charge of the wet gathering on the bank and organizes a circular race with no clear start, finish, or winner.

Caterpillar (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 5

A blue, hookah-smoking creature who questions Alice closely about who she is. His calm, cryptic advice helps her learn how different sides of a mushroom can alter her size.

Duchess (Supporting)

A noblewoman of Wonderland whose chaotic household includes a pepper-filled kitchen and a constantly sneezing baby. She is violent and argumentative when Alice first meets her.

Cheshire Cat (Supporting)

The Duchess's grinning cat, able to appear and disappear a piece at a time. He directs Alice toward the March Hare and the Hatter and calmly explains that madness is normal in Wonderland.

March Hare (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

An excitable hare who hosts a perpetual tea party outside his house. He and the Hatter greet Alice with riddles, contradictions, and abrupt changes of place.

Hatter (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 7

A sharp-tongued participant in the endless tea party, where Time has stopped at six o'clock. He poses an unanswered riddle and repeatedly disputes Alice's attempts to reason with the company.

Dormouse (Minor)

First appears in chapter 7

A sleepy guest squeezed between the March Hare and the Hatter. He is repeatedly awakened to tell a rambling story about three sisters living in a treacle well.

Queen of Hearts (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 8

Wonderland's imperious ruler, quick to order executions whenever anyone displeases her. Alice meets her among living playing cards and is drawn into the Queen's disorderly croquet game.

King of Hearts (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 8

The Queen's quieter husband. He accompanies her at croquet and tries to apply royal authority with less fury, though he remains part of her arbitrary court.

Gryphon (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 9

A creature with an eagle's head and wings and a lion's body. At the Queen's direction he escorts Alice to hear the Mock Turtle's history.

Mock Turtle (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 9

A melancholy being with a calf's head and a turtle's body who claims to have once been a real turtle. He tells Alice about an eccentric seaside education and demonstrates its dances with the Gryphon.

Knave of Hearts (Minor)

First appears in chapter 11

A playing-card courtier accused of stealing the Queen's tarts. His case becomes the subject of a trial at which Wonderland's rulers ignore ordinary evidence and procedure.
