In short (whole book)
Arthur and Brixaby reach New Houston, a city built around a managed Darkheart, and earn entry to its reshuffling while fighting organized Scourgeling threats in the surrounding Scourge Deadlands. Arthur's card anchor is destroyed during a dispute over a major harvest, but he recovers its cards and learns that nearby nests grow around buried dragons and decaying cards. Reunited with Cressida, Joy, Horatio, and Sams, he enters the early-ripening Darkheart alongside Marion and Soledad. Personalized trials yield new powers, two dragon eggs, and evidence about the origins of cards. After bandits attack their territory, Soledad bonds with Equinox, while Marion's damaged heart initially prevents his bond with Asha. Mythic dragons reveal that Darkhearts are scourge-god traps designed to harvest delvers' cards and eventually destroy their cities. Arthur completes his legendary Master set with Master of Cards and expands his heart deck. Marion repairs his heart, bonds with Asha, and accepts a mission to heal King Eleazar. The party escapes, but New Houston's eventual eruption remains unresolved.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Arthur and Brixaby are linked rider and dragon, carrying legendary power while facing several unresolved conflicts. The escaped Mindsinger remains a major Scourge threat, operating through a corrupted white-dragon body with followers, eggs, and a legendary card. Wolf Moon Hive is politically divided. Valentina supports Arthur, while Whitaker remains a rival connected to his earlier training. At Mesa Free Hive, Laird is working to improve the settlement's defenses, but Chablis has reservations about a more combat-focused course. Arthur's family position is also unsettled. His cousin Pennrow Rowantree is a rival legendary holder and claimant, his father Calvan is vulnerable near the border, and his uncle Lionel remains a threat. Arthur's use of the Ernest Kane identity ties him to Baron Kane, whose debts drive an interest in Arthur's legendary card. A hostile carded associate known as Second also claims Arthur owes him for a rescue, despite having tried to kill him. These political, family, and personal dangers remain active as Arthur and Brixaby begin their next journey.
Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)
Arthur and Brixaby arrive outside a foreign walled city where the language, transport systems, and constant Scourgeling danger are unfamiliar. Border officer Domingo admits Arthur after hearing his cover story, and Arthur helps the guards defeat an unusually powerful attacker. Inside, Arthur trades valuable enchanting knowledge for instruction in Texan, allowing both partners to communicate locally. They learn that New Houston stands above a Darkheart that suppresses ordinary eruptions and periodically opens for a reshuffling, where delvers can seek cards and other rewards. Arthur and Brixaby decide to enter. Their public flight draws official attention, but the city instead hires them to help answer the growing attacks. Undersheriff Lopez sends them along the Scourge Deadlands road, where they save one caravan from a large flock and learn that children from another wagon group are still missing. Arthur and Brixaby find the destroyed wagons and uncover an underground shelter holding survivors. The rescue proves to be bait: rare Scourgelings have waited nearby for someone to expose the concealed group.
Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)
Arthur evacuates the children into his personal space and discovers that much of the apparent rare force is an illusion. He kills the true illusion wielder and secretly takes its card, but suffers a severe wound. At the hospital, Marion helps secure treatment and conceals the card from the sheriffs. Arthur releases the rescued children and receives a reward, only to lose it immediately to his medical bill. Soledad Boudreaux, a cardless survivor who protected younger travelers, asks to pursue dragon riding with him. Arthur bargains with Over-Sheriff Walker for five early reshuffling places in return for guiding an expedition to the rare Scourgelings. The force includes Lopez, the Lightning Cats, and Claude, an inventive utility specialist. Their search reveals a fissure producing Scourgelings and a concealed rare nest. Most adventurers treat it as a harvest opportunity despite Arthur's warning. When the battle begins, an earthquake drops combatants and monsters into a deep pit, revealing that the rare Scourgelings prepared a mass-casualty trap.
Story so far - through chapter 23 (this book)
Arthur and Brixaby help rescue survivors from the pit while Claude burns many trapped Scourgelings. Bradley ends the battle with toxic gas, then exploits the sealed area to claim nearly every valuable corpse. Arthur enters the gas to challenge him, temporarily removes Bradley's three rare cards, and forces a fair distribution. Holding those cards catastrophically damages Arthur's card anchor. During the later auction he nevertheless steals and consumes Endless Grindstone, a utility card that accelerates learning, and collapses. Hospital specialists find that the shattered anchor has wounded his soul and cannot safely be replaced for at least a year. Brixaby returns to the nest and discovers living spawn and hidden shards beneath it. Arthur learns that the anchor's cards still exist and uses card shuffling to extract them, but his heart deck has only one free space and cannot hold the recovered set. The pair now have several loose cards, a damaged soul, no safe anchor, and evidence that the supposedly defeated nest continues producing Scourgelings underground.
Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)
Arthur and Brixaby locate more nests in the Scourge Deadlands and discover buried dragon corpses beneath them. Decaying cards left in the bodies appear to sustain the nests and their regenerating spawn. A silver dragon yields three damaged rare cards concerned with repairing cards, understanding them, and working with shards. Arthur lacks room to use the trio and fears worsening his soul injury, so Brixaby stores them. Daniel helps the pair rent a secluded barn and trade lesser cards for supplies. Ravi, a healer with exceptional heart-deck insight, advises Arthur to respect his soul's resistance to a new anchor. He suggests that the Darkheart may instead let Arthur rearrange or expand his natural deck. Arthur trains meditation for that attempt. Cressida, Horatio, Joy, and Sams then arrive after a punishing crossing of the Deadlands, still fighting a large airborne flock. Arthur and Brixaby join the battle, reunite with their allies, and provide food and water. The expanded group clears another nest, finds another dead dragon and decaying card, and strengthens Arthur's belief that preserving damaged cards may help prevent new Scourgelings.
Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)
Guided meditation helps Arthur identify Master of Cards as the missing legendary card in his set and as his goal within the Darkheart. Brixaby finally advances his crafting by creating art rather than merely useful equipment, gaining the Blacksmith Artist class. Arthur prepares a delve with Brixaby, Cressida and Joy, Horatio and Sams, Marion, and Soledad. He distributes rare cards, reveals his existing Master cards, and trains neglected practical skills. The group studies the Darkheart's shifting, individualized dangers, but its opening arrives two days earlier than predicted. Over-Sheriff Walker warns that it is close to eruption and asks strong delvers to relieve its magical pressure. The party gathers equipment and healing supplies, sets an escape point outside the city, and descends by dragon amid a disorderly crowd. Inside, a legendary force asks Arthur what he needs. When he answers Master of Cards, the force separates him from Brixaby and strips away most of his usual options, beginning a private trial while the other members are also divided into challenges tailored to them.
Story so far - through chapter 44 (this book)
The preliminary Darkheart trials reward each member differently. Arthur advances his Cooking class through an endless hostile kitchen. Brixaby fights through a foundry, Joy develops her intuition in a labyrinth, Soledad rescues hatchlings while gathering blank shards, Marion develops medical judgment, Cressida earns a new summon, and Horatio and Sams refine their control of light. Reunited, the party claims a territory and splits again. Joy's intuition sends Arthur alone into a Utility challenge that resembles a technological society facing the first spread of the scourge. Arthur teaches bunker survivors how to assemble blank shards into cards and sees cards become a defense against airborne rot, though he cannot know whether the scenario is literal history. When the bunker falls, he escapes with three rare medical cards and two blank dragon eggs. Meanwhile, Brixaby leads the Combat group on a volcanic island. The group defeats a lava-covered rare, but a false legendary reward enthralls Brixaby until Joy exposes the illusion trap. The combat team secures additional rare cards, and both groups return to their territory with their rewards.
Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)
Arthur gives Marion the three rare healing cards, and the group feeds blank shards into the two eggs. One becomes a red egg suited to Soledad, the other a luminous silver egg suited to Marion. A bandit group then breaches the territory, demands the party's resources, and tries to abduct Soledad. Brixaby loses control under Berserker's Rage, but the retinue recovers and kills the attackers after their leader breaks a surrender. Among the captured cards Arthur finds some belonging to the missing Claude, though the discovery does not establish Claude's fate. Marion uses the rare Material Dungeoneer card to build a nest. Soledad's red hatchling bonds with her, but Marion's silver hatchling cannot link because his heart still bears damage from former legendary power. Arthur refuses to abandon the bond. Marion opens a limited route toward the core for Arthur, Brixaby, Cressida, Horatio, the silver hatchling, and himself, while the others defend the territory with Soledad's hatchling, Equinox. The descending team reaches a gemmed door and passes into crushing spiritual pressure before a scourge god.
Story so far - through chapter 51 (this book)
Mythic dragons intervene against the scourge gods and explain the Darkheart's true purpose. Its escalating challenges collect cards from dead delvers, letting the trap grow until an eruption destroys the city above. They protect Arthur long enough to attempt one final challenge in return for his agreement to resume leadership at Wolf Moon Hive and send Marion to treat King Eleazar. Arthur faces an illusion of Pennrow Rowantree, accepts responsibility for his own wrongs without yielding to fear, and wins five new heart-deck spaces. He takes Master of Cards, completing a legendary three-card set and gaining advanced control over decks and cards. Marion uses the challenge's wish to repair his heart, losing the remnants of his old legendary benefits. The silver origin hatchling then chooses healing power, bonds with him, and takes the name Asha. The party escapes before the mythics' protection fails. Days later, Arthur repairs the damaged rare meta-card trio and begins developing as a Card Smith. He warns New Houston's sheriff about the trap, but the city cannot close it without unrest. Arthur cannot enter again. Claude remains missing, and the eventual eruption is only delayed as Arthur and Brixaby prepare to pursue their remaining legendary cards.
How does it end? (ending)
Arthur, Brixaby, Cressida, Joy, Horatio, Sams, Soledad, Equinox, Marion, and Asha escape New Houston's Darkheart. Arthur learns that Darkhearts are traps maintained by scourge gods, gathering the cards of dead delvers until they can erupt beneath the settlement above. New Houston's sheriff agrees to discourage deeper delves but cannot close the site without provoking unrest, and Arthur is barred from entering again. Arthur leaves with Master of Cards, five additional heart-deck spaces, and a repaired rare trio that supports card restoration. Soledad is bonded to Equinox. Marion repairs his heart at the cost of his former legendary benefits and bonds to the origin hatchling Asha. He must now attempt to heal King Eleazar under the mythic dragons' protection. Claude remains missing after his cards are found among the bandits' possessions. Arthur and Brixaby plan to watch New Houston briefly, pursue the remaining legendary cards, and eventually return to Wolf Moon Hive. The Mindsinger conflict, Mesa Free Hive's defense, Wolf Moon politics, the Rowantree claim, and Arthur's other inherited enemies remain unresolved.
