A telepathic waitress at Merlotte's bar in Bon Temps, Louisiana, now openly employed from time to time by the vampires of her state. She is seeing the weretiger Quinn, sharing her house with the witch Amelia Broadway, and thoroughly finished with Bill Compton. Her ability is valuable enough that powerful vampires want to own it outright, and she has begun to understand that being useful to them is not the same as being protected by them.

A weretiger who organizes ceremonies and large events for the supernatural world, and Sookie's boyfriend. Straightforward, physically formidable and unusually honest with her about what he is doing and why, he is running the arrangements for the vampires' summit, which means he will be working while she is there.

The New Orleans witch who now rents the upstairs of Sookie's house, exiled from her own coven after a spell of hers turned a fellow witch into a cat. She has lost her city and most of her belongings to the hurricane, and she is good company, useful in a crisis, and incapable of leaving well enough alone.

Sookie's boss at Merlotte's and a shapeshifter, holding the bar and the town together while the parish absorbs evacuees and bad feeling in equal measure.

The part-demon lawyer who handles the legal affairs of the supernatural world in Louisiana. He is representing the Queen at the summit, is fond of good food and reasonable arrangements, and knows a great deal more about Sookie's family than he has said.

The vampire Queen of Louisiana, ruined by the hurricane that destroyed New Orleans and stripped her of her headquarters, her income and much of her household. She travels to the summit to answer a charge of murdering her husband, the King of Arkansas, with almost nothing left to bargain with except her wits and her telepath.

The Queen of Louisiana's child, bodyguard and chief instrument, a vampire with a boy's face and no human feeling at all. With his queen ruined and her enemies circling, he is looking for anything at all that will shore up her position.

The thousand-year-old sheriff of northern Louisiana, attending the summit in his queen's party. He is playing several games at once: protecting his own position under a ruined monarch, keeping Sookie out of other vampires' hands, and getting what he wants from her without ever asking plainly.

Eric's second at Fangtasia, attending the summit as part of the Louisiana delegation, and as dry about vampire ceremony as she is about everything else.

Sookie's former lover, in the Queen's party at the summit because the vampire database he compiled is one of Louisiana's few remaining assets. Sookie has not forgiven him for having been sent to seduce her, and having to work in the same rooms as him is a misery she has agreed to for money.

A young man Sookie first met working in a Dallas hotel, the only other telepath she knows. He now works openly for the King of Texas under a professional name and has learned to use his gift deliberately instead of hiding from it. He and Sookie can reach each other mind to mind, which neither of them can do with anyone else.

The young werewolf who was made a vampire against his will after being mauled, cut off from his old pack and never accepted by his new kind. He is part of the Louisiana household at the summit, working security, and he is not happy in it.

A human attorney who specializes in vampire law, hired to defend the Queen of Louisiana. He is expert, expensive and unpleasant, with a violent history he does not trouble to hide, and he is on the run from people in his own past.

The vampire pressing the case against Sophie-Anne Leclerq on behalf of the surviving vampires of Arkansas. She wants the Queen convicted, executed and her kingdom awarded to Arkansas, and she has been building the case for months.

A surviving vampire of the Arkansas household, timid and badly frightened, who is convinced that someone intends to kill him before he can give evidence at the trial.

A bodyguard hired from another dimension by the King of Kentucky, armored, heavily armed and contractually incapable of being distracted. She is polite to Sookie in a way almost nobody at the summit is, and treats her employer's safety as an absolute.
