An Alabama plantation owner and civilian supporter of the Confederacy. Kept from military service by circumstances, he is eager to aid the Southern cause and is willing to attempt dangerous sabotage when he hears of an opportunity.

Mrs. Farquhar (Minor)

First appears in chapter 2

Peyton Farquhar's wife, seen at their plantation when she brings water to a visiting soldier. Thoughts of reaching her and their home occupy Farquhar as he awaits execution.

The Federal Scout (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 2

A Federal scout who visits the Farquhar plantation disguised as a Confederate soldier. He tells Farquhar that Union forces have repaired the Owl Creek railroad bridge and that any civilian interfering with it will be hanged.

The Sergeant (Minor)

Appears from the start

The noncommissioned officer supervising the condemned man's hanging from the railroad bridge. He stands on the same loose plank as the prisoner until the captain gives the signal to proceed.

The Captain (Minor)

Appears from the start

The Union officer commanding the soldiers at Owl Creek Bridge. He observes the formal execution in silence and controls its final movement with a signal to the sergeant.
