Anne of Avonlea

By L. M. Montgomery

At sixteen and a half Anne Shirley is staying on at Green Gables with Marilla, and in the autumn she is to take charge of the Avonlea school, full of ideals about how a teacher should win over her pupils. Before term even begins she has fallen out with her new neighbour, Mr Harrison, a blunt man from New Brunswick who keeps a parrot with a shocking vocabulary, over the Jersey cow that keeps getting into his oats, and she and her friends, Gilbert Blythe among them, are launching a society to improve the look of the village. Then a distant cousin of Marilla's dies, and a pair of young twins, quiet, well-behaved Dora and her irrepressible brother Davy, come to live at Green Gables. Montgomery's sequel to Anne of Green Gables follows Anne's years as a village schoolteacher, among her pupils, her neighbours and her own hopes for the future.
