Anne of Green Gables

By L. M. Montgomery

Matthew Cuthbert, a shy farmer of sixty, and his sister Marilla live at Green Gables, a farm outside the village of Avonlea on Prince Edward Island, and have arranged to take in a boy of ten or eleven from a Nova Scotia orphanage to help Matthew with the work. When Matthew drives to the Bright River station to meet the train, the child waiting for him is a girl: Anne Shirley, eleven, thin, red-haired and almost never silent, who is overjoyed at the thought of having a home at last. Matthew cannot bring himself to leave her at the station, and Marilla, practical and unbending, has to decide what to do with a child nobody asked for. L. M. Montgomery's novel follows Anne's growing up in Avonlea, with her friendships, her quarrels, her schooling and her irrepressible imagination, and is the first of the Anne books.
