In short (whole book)
Cut off from the system, Jebediah Trapper learns to gain lasting power through fairy bargains. A rescue in Kalfath leads an Imperial Enforcer to send him after a reaper abducting children in a southern refugee city. Jeb opens an orphanage as a lure and uncovers a trade that forces captives to gain impact so wealthy Keegan can pursue immortality. Nancy leads the children from their prison while Jeb, Smartass, Colt, Ron, Eddie, and the former Kalfath sheriff challenge the trafficker and a corrupt judge. The children are recovered, but Jeb needs records of protected honor duels and the trafficker's testimony to expose the investors. The emperor orders the implicated nobles executed, and Jeb kills the trafficker. Jeb is freed and invited to claim his withheld tutorial reward. The orphanage survives an attack without losing a child, but the emperor investigates Jeb, Casey Thompson serves as an Enforcer while her child remains with the emperor, and Zen coerces Cole into a new tracking assignment.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Jebediah Trapper survived the Impossible Tutorial. Smartass, his fairy familiar, remains his closest companion and guide to fairy rules.
Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)
Jeb begins homeless in Kalfath, unable to use the system and jailed after a wealthy Keegan steals from him and accuses him of robbery. Smartass teaches him that a truthful person can gain permanent impact through willingly accepted bargains that disadvantage the bargain maker. After forging a recommendation to join the Hunters Association, Jeb takes a bounty to rescue the businessman's kidnapped daughter from sand pirates. He follows an informant, enters the camp under a false identity, and refuses the pirate captain's attempt to recruit him. When the captain stabs him, Jeb brings down a concealed swarm of void butterflies and destroys the camp. He frees the captive daughter but collapses from his wound. Once safe, he collects the bounties and returns her under a deal for payment. The businessman delays paying, setting up the possibility that his bad faith will yield a more valuable fairy-bargain return.
Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)
Evidence reveals that the Kalfath businessman arranged his own daughter's abduction as collateral in a mine dispute. An Imperial Enforcer intervenes, and Jeb gains substantial mist-related impact from the broken trust surrounding his bargain. The Enforcer also recognizes him as an Impossible Tutorial survivor and binds him to stop a child-abducting reaper in a southern refugee city in exchange for keeping his identity from her superiors. Jeb travels south, acquires an off-road vehicle, survives an attack on his caravan, and frightens away another pirate group through a staged show of force. He and Smartass formalize a familiar contract that pays her a share of his future impact. After narrowly escaping a reality-distorting Royal storm, they reach the famine-struck city. Jeb buys an abandoned mansion as a base and recruits teachers, household workers, and Eddie, a roboticist, intending to shelter vulnerable children and draw the killer into the open. Meanwhile, a level-57 courier-assassin is following a letter that leads directly to Jeb.
Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)
Jeb builds the mansion into an openly operated orphanage and equips Eddie's basement laboratory with mist-powered technology. He meets Colt, the armed teenage leader of children living in a bookstore, and Ron, an old ally whose customized undead supply labor. Nancy, one of Colt's companions, is abducted after a voice imitates Colt at the bookstore door. Her captor presents himself as a rescuer and offers a path to immortality. Jeb also discovers an unseen worm-like entity stitched to his head. Removing it floods him with fragments of an academy student's life and leaves his Mystic Trapsmith ability listed as missing or corrupted. Colt initially suspects Jeb but is persuaded by Smartass's inability to lie and agrees to bring children to the mansion. Three weeks later, about 150 children live there. The crowded orphanage is now both a refuge and a deliberate lure, and an armed Keegan arrives as rumors spread that children may be disappearing inside.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
The visitor is the former Kalfath sheriff, angry over losing his position. Jeb wins his conditional help by staking gold and promising him public credit for catching the reaper. The enemy operation trains abducted children to kill captive creatures for impact, intending to sell them to wealthy investors as candidates for immortality. Nancy learns that the promised academy is a lie when a corrupt judge kills Jake. With Thomas's knowledge of a concealed route, she prepares the captives to escape. The trafficker targets the orphanage, while officials instead arrest Jeb on fabricated reaping charges and torture him for a confession. The former sheriff uses an Enforcer's deputy plate to turn the investigation against the officials protecting the judge. At trial, Jeb binds the judge to a fairy bargain and asks whether he helped exploit or kill children. The judge refuses to answer, his denials register as lies, and Ron blocks his attack on Jeb. Publicly exposed but not yet defeated, the judge forces Jeb into an honor duel. Jeb chooses the trafficker's castle as its location after learning that Nancy's escape is underway there.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
Nancy uses her Mascot ability to coordinate the captives as they flee through the castle. Jeb, Colt, the former sheriff, and Ron converge on the site while one of the noble investors tries to kill the trafficker before he can identify his clients. Ron is severely stabbed but survives after a bargain transfers impact to him. Jeb throws the trafficker from the roof, and Colt briefly brings him down with slime, but the trafficker escapes using advanced mist constructs. The surviving children are recovered, including six with serious but stable wounds. Nancy confirms that the trafficker dealt directly with the corrupt judge. The former sheriff concludes that aristocrats have hidden murders behind legally protected honor duels, so Jeb's group targets the Book of Honor for evidence. Eddie secretly copies its recent names before security closes in. Cole reaches Jeb to fulfill the earlier assassination contract, but Smartass wounds him and he abandons the job after delivering a poisoned letter trap. Jeb now has the copied list and sends Brett and Amanda Corvar a message offering a way to act against the conspiracy.
Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)
The emperor summons Brett and Amanda Corvar and commissions them to execute the people implicated by Jeb's evidence. As Jeb prepares for renewed court proceedings, the former sheriff becomes the legal owner of Admiral Orphanage, and Jeb and Eddie reinforce its defenses with Buck and Legolas. Conspirators capture Jeb and the sheriff at an imperial party and destroy one copy of the evidence, but Jeb cuts himself free and falls into the gathering. The emperor retrieves a hidden duplicate list and assembles the named nobles. Because their honor-duel killings are legally protected, he relies on the trafficker's testimony that they funded illegal immortality experiments. He orders his human vassals to execute them, Jessica begins the killings, and Jeb kills the trafficker during the chaos. The emperor releases Jeb, credits the former sheriff, and invites Jeb to collect his stored Impossible Tutorial reward in the capital. Amanda restores Jeb's severed finger. Buck and Legolas successfully defend the orphanage, with no children killed. The emperor continues investigating Jeb's fairy connection and keeps Casey Thompson III under his care while Casey serves as an Imperial Enforcer. Zen then compels Cole into temporary service as a tracker and possible assassin.
How does it end? (ending)
The emperor uses the trafficker's testimony to recast the conspiracy as the illegal funding of immortality experiments, avoiding the legal protection surrounding the nobles' honor-duel killings. Jessica and the other imperial human vassals begin executing the implicated conspirators, while Jeb kills the trafficker and completes his obligation to the suspended Milas Enforcer. The corrupt judge survives long enough to be questioned by the emperor, but his ultimate fate is not established. Jeb is released from his suppression collar, Amanda restores his severed finger, and the emperor invites him to the capital for his stored Impossible Tutorial reward. The former Kalfath sheriff receives public credit and remains the legal owner of Admiral Orphanage. Buck and Legolas repel an attack there without any child deaths, while Ron remains alive but badly wounded. Jeb's system exclusion and damaged Mystic Trapsmith ability are unresolved. The emperor is examining Jeb's connection to fairy power and retains Casey Thompson III while Casey serves as an Enforcer. Elsewhere, Zen compels Cole to work as a tracker and possible assassin, leaving a separate threat active.
