Around the World in Eighty Days

By Jules Verne

Phileas Fogg is a wealthy, exact and solitary London gentleman who lives by the clock at the Reform Club and has just taken on a new French manservant, Passepartout, who hopes for a quiet post. That same evening, over whist, the club falls to arguing about a newspaper's claim that new railways and steamer lines mean a traveller can now go round the world in eighty days. Fogg says it can be done and stakes twenty thousand pounds, half his fortune, that he will do it himself, leaving that very night and returning to the club by a quarter to nine on the evening of 21 December. With a carpet-bag of banknotes and a bewildered Passepartout he sets off for the Continent and the Suez Canal. A robbery at the Bank of England a few days earlier has put detectives on the watch at the ports, and the description of the thief fits Fogg rather too well.
