Assassin’s Fate characters

By Robin Hobb

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

FitzChivalry Farseer (Protagonist)

Also known as Tom Badgerlock, Fitz

Appears from the start

FitzChivalry Farseer, lately acknowledged as a prince of the Six Duchies and no longer interested in being one. He believes his younger daughter was murdered, he has a hand full of Silver that unmakes whatever it touches unprotected, and he is travelling south with one purpose: to destroy the Servants of Clerres entirely. He is past fifty, damaged by years of Skill use, and better at killing than at anything else he has ever been asked to do.

Bee (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

Fitz and Molly's younger daughter, about ten years old and small for far less than that, stranded thousands of miles from home in an Elderling city after months lost inside the Skill-pillars. She dreams true, writes everything down, and has survived captivity by being underestimated. Her captors believe she is the awaited one of their prophecies.

The Fool (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The White Prophet, healed in body but still blind, travelling south in disguise with Fitz. He grew up inside Clerres, knows its walls, its people and its habits, and wants every one of them dead. He is also keeping things from Fitz, as he always has.

FitzVigilant (Supporting)

Also known as Lant

Appears from the start

Chade's acknowledged son, a scribe and swordsman of moderate talent who failed to protect Withywoods and has come along to make up for it. He is loyal, unlucky and out of his element on every leg of the journey.

Spark (Supporting)

Also known as Ash

Appears from the start

Chade's apprentice, trained in poisons, disguise and quiet violence, who has spent years being taken for a boy and finds it useful. Young, quick and entirely at home in a conspiracy.

Perseverance (Supporting)

Appears from the start

The Withywoods stable boy who survived the raid, attached himself to Fitz's household and refuses to be sent home. He is the only member of the party who never stopped believing Bee might be alive.

Dwalia (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

The Servant who led the raid on Withywoods, stranded far from Clerres with her prize and her prophecy and very little else. Her certainty has survived being lost in the Skill-pillars, and she still intends to deliver Bee to the order that raised her.

Vindeliar (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

The pale Servant whose fog can make people forget what they are looking at and believe what he wants them to believe. He is powerful, childlike and desperate to be wanted, and Bee has learned exactly where those two things meet.

Malta Khuprus (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

An Elderling and the effective ruler of Kelsingra, once a Bingtown Trader's daughter. She takes in a starving foreign child and a party of strangers who came out of a Skill-pillar and begins working out which of them are prisoners and which are jailers.

Paragon (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 12

A liveship with a hacked-off face and a violent history, built of wizardwood that was never wood at all. He has capsized, killed crews, been abandoned on a beach and been salvaged, and he is not one person: there is more than one mind in his timbers, and all of them remember being something other than a ship.

Althea Vestrit (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 12

A Bingtown Trader's daughter who spent her youth fighting for the right to sail her family's liveship and has been at sea ever since. Blunt, seasoned and unimpressed by rank, she knows the Fool by an older acquaintance and an older name.

Brashen Trell (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 12

Captain of the liveship Paragon, a disowned Trader's son who made himself a sailor the hard way. He is Althea's husband and the only man who has ever kept Paragon sailing for long.

Kennitsson (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 13

The son of the pirate king Kennit and the Pirate Isles' reigning queen, handsome, headstrong and deeply unwilling to inherit a throne he never asked for or a father's reputation he does not admire.

Etta (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 16

Ruler of the Pirate Isles, once a whore aboard a pirate ship and now a queen who governs by force of will. She built a kingdom out of her dead husband's legend and intends her son to keep it.

The Four (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 23

The ruling council of Clerres: a handful of Servants who own a walled island fortress, a school, a breeding programme for prophets, and a trade in selling futures to anyone who can pay. They are old, comfortable, and accustomed to being obeyed by everyone within their walls.

Prilkop (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 30

A dark-skinned man who was a White Prophet in an age long past, and who went south with the Fool when both of them left the Six Duchies. He has been at Clerres a long time and not by choice.
