In short (whole book)
Back in Ravenhall, Ilea expands the Medic Sentinels, trains her resistances, saves Riverwatch from an invading slave-taking army, and becomes eligible for a third class. She chooses a Fae-and-Valkyrie path centered on space and creation flame, then joins Helena's elite mission against the Order of Truth's city-killing rituals. The mission stops several attacks but leaves a stable fissure to Erendar. There, Ilea meets Endless Meadow, guardian of 53 awakened survivors threatened by an eclipse and astral spirits. After months of training, she moves every refugee to Hallowfort. Ilea returns for the gate closure, battles the Daughters of Cephalon beside an ancient ice elemental, and carries the weakened Endless Meadow to Elos. Hallowfort accepts the refugees and their guardian, while Kyrian, Eve's murder, the Taleen gates, Baralia's war, and the larger ambitions of the Golden Lily and Order of Truth remain open.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Ilea Spears, also known publicly as Lilith, has become an Azarinth Sentinel and Kin of Ash whose healing, ash magic, and teleportation let her survive threats beyond most human fighters. She is closely tied to Ravenhall, where Claire and Trian support her projects and political position. Her influence now extends beyond personal adventuring into the city's development and an independent school for combat healers. Her northern allies include Catelyn and Hallowfort. Ilea's companion Kyrian remains missing. Eve, an investigator allied with Ilea, is dead, and neither her killer nor the full meaning of her connection to the Golden Lily has been established. These absences remain personal obligations rather than settled history. Ilea enters this volume with growing public influence, unusually broad combat experience, and unfinished debts to both companions.
Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)
Ilea returns to Ravenhall and tells Claire and Trian about her recent travels. Kyrian is alive but trapped somewhere that may require enchantment work to reach. Rather than rush toward a third class, Ilea chooses to build resistances and general skills. She publicly takes charge of afternoon instruction for the Medic Sentinels, revealing herself as Lilith to the recruits. Nathan, Celeste, and Luke endure early lightning, blood-corruption, and ash training under her healing. Aki demonstrates direct combat and affirms that he remains with the school by choice as a guardian and teacher. Outside the school, Ilea explores Karheim's gem golems and blighted ruins for rare resistances, expands paid arena training, and begins formal dancing lessons with Claire. Iana and Christopher's teleportation project is still unsafe, but their examination of Ilea's tungsten artifact suggests it is one of twelve intricate Taleen keys. Orthon also begins testing whether Ilea's regenerated bone can become durable Sentinel armor.
Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)
Teleportation experiments establish a connection but still transfer only pieces of Ilea, making her regeneration essential to the research. Seeking stronger training, she joins Sean, Sophia, Edgar, and Colt in the Caverns of Rot. After revealing her level and ash defenses, she protects the party through encounters with Rotten Abominations, gaining flesh, bone, and rot-related defenses. The dungeon's deeper aura forces the group to withdraw. Sophia concludes that relentless danger is not the life she wants and chooses to pursue ownership of an inn. Ilea returns alone, kills one level-621 Specter of Rot, and preserves the others as future opponents while deliberately stopping short of her next level threshold. Back in Ravenhall, larger arena sessions broaden her resistance work. Dagon and Elise find a possible lead concerning Eve's earlier life, but Claire interrupts with a request from Riverwatch: Governor Alistair needs Lilith to investigate attacks and disappearances around the city. Ilea leaves to assess the threat herself.
Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)
Near Riverwatch, Ilea captures Ario, an enslaved assassin controlled through explosive teeth. After freeing and healing him, she uses his information to find a camp holding captives for Lord Harkin of Weinhold. She kills the camp commander, frees the prisoners, and brings evidence to Riverwatch, while Ario leaves to liberate others still enslaved. Ilea gives Dale an emergency mark before returning to training. Soon an organized army surrounds Riverwatch, breaks a gate, and begins a full assault. Dale calls for help. Ilea arrives as Lilith, orders the attackers to withdraw and release their enslaved fighters, then takes the field when their commander refuses. She destroys the elite formation, routs the army, and kills the fleeing lord. Riverwatch survives, and Dale directs the handling of prisoners, freed people, fires, and the dead. The victory protects the city but exposes Ilea's power publicly, leaving residents grateful, frightened, and dependent on Ravenhall's help with reconstruction.
Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)
Riverwatch begins repairs and absorbs surrendered soldiers and newly freed people. Late Shadow reinforcements include Rivka, an astral mage whose attacks give Ilea a new resistance before Ilea defeats her in close combat. Ilea spends time with Dale's family, marks Walter as another emergency contact, and returns to Ravenhall as Claire prepares for the political consequences of Lilith's victory. The Medic Sentinel trainees begin supervised dungeon expeditions in their new personalized armor. During one expedition, Nathan remains behind while badly injured to protect Celeste from a cave troll. Ilea intervenes and heals the group, and Nathan replaces his fire class with Guardian Medic, becoming the corps' first specialized battle healer. Other Sentinel-derived classes soon appear. All fifty selected trainees graduate as armored apprentices capable of healing work and short dungeon missions. At the same time, Ilea pushes both established classes beyond level 350, making her eligible for a subdued additional class.
Story so far - through chapter 38 (this book)
With Claire and Trian advising her, Ilea chooses an additional Fae-and-Valkyrie class. Its pale creation flame harms her body and soul, but her regeneration largely counters the cost. She selects Displacement, Force, and Flare of Creation alongside passive improvements to teleportation, resilience, and spatial perception, then begins leveling them against corrupted creatures. Her trial armor also helps her unlock perception of her own soul. Aki continues as a central Sentinel instructor. Ilea then follows the investigation into Eve to Farport. Testimony there strongly supports that Eve was once a young local mind mage who survived an officially reported death and later retaliated against a cruel lord. The evidence gives Ilea part of Eve's history, but not the truth of her eventual murder or the Golden Lily's involvement. Elsewhere, Imperial troops taking Odia are struck by an enormous blood-and-curse ritual. Felicia saves survivors as transformed soldiers attack them, while Helena and Amara conclude that the Order of Truth has influence over the High King and a plan extending beyond the immediate war.
Story so far - through chapter 44 (this book)
Ilea travels to unsettled Dawntree and enters a sealed Taleen dungeon to recover a failed expedition. She destroys its two elite Praetorians, retrieves the dead, and discovers both a gate key and a functioning Taleen route. The gate leads to an active production cavern filled with machines, including variants powerful enough to drive her back. Ilea destroys the local platform to prevent pursuit, leaving the larger installation beyond her reach. In Dawntree, she completes the expedition's contracts, arranges a funeral for the recovered dead, and offers sanctuary in Ravenhall to healers who want to escape the expelled local order. She also spars with an estate heir who has become an Azarinth healer. Returning home, Ilea gives the enchanters a damaged machine and another key for their gate research. Helena then invites Lilith south. Claire connects Helena to a large baking business, assassin services, and the Golden Lily. Ilea accepts the meeting with shadow teams prepared to respond if she signals danger.
Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)
Helena receives Ilea with poisoned food that cannot overcome her resistances, then identifies herself as both a business leader and the head of an assassin service. She describes the Golden Lily as a small network of exceptionally powerful people and asks Ilea to help stop the Order of Truth's blood rituals in Baralia. Three cities have been devastated, cursed victims retain dangerous abilities, and new high-level creatures have appeared. Ilea does not trust Helena's defense of the existing balance of power, but agrees that preventing further massacres justifies joining the operation. Helena privately judges Ilea dangerous yet unlikely to destabilize territories without cause. She also regards Ravenhall's united institutions as a growing concern. Ravenhall's council supports Ilea's participation as an independent action and sees possible value in learning more about the Golden Lily from inside its operation. Ravenhall itself will not enter the war without a direct request, leaving Ilea to investigate with Helena's assembled specialists.
Story so far - through chapter 56 (this book)
Ilea joins a covert team that includes the sea mage called the Destroyer, Felicia, an unnamed Golden Lily general, an elite Dawn Company contingent, and a blood-and-gold specialist. The Destroyer reveals his name as Hector after the group clears a ruined city. There they find a failed ritual that has warped space and continues producing monsters until its arrays are destroyed. At a second city, Ilea's improved spatial perception shows that the Order is trying to create a lasting bridge between realms, with power coming from the far side. The team closes that breach and follows evidence to a populated target. Infiltrating before the ritual begins, Ilea finds widespread oppression and frees captives from a noble's underground arena. A poor resident named Ivan directs her to Nicholas, a charitable Order healer. After reviewing captured documents, Nicholas accepts that senior members of his order intend to sacrifice the city and helps the team trace the hidden underground construction.
Story so far - through chapter 65 (this book)
The strike team raids the underground temple and stops its ritual before activation. Nicholas identifies one of the dead leaders, and recovered records point to a fortified lake-island city as the final known target. There the blood-and-gold mage claims he can redirect the ritual into supplied blood, but uses Ilea's spatial assistance to complete a stable fissure instead. The opening leads to a frozen, mana-rich realm. Ilea, Hector, Felicia, the general, and the mage cross over and encounter sapient mantis-like inhabitants. Attempts at contact fail, and the expedition kills their warrior queen and other defenders. Her death summons a vast horde of death spirits, while astral spirits add another hostile force. The human team escapes, though the general vanishes through emergency magic and Felicia is gravely wounded before Ilea heals her. Returning with Felicia, Ilea follows a peaceful mental presence beneath the temple and finds a crystal-tree sanctuary. Its ancient guardian explains that it opened the fissure to save awakened beings threatened by cold, starvation, and approaching spirits.
Story so far - through chapter 74 (this book)
The sanctuary guardian explains that Erendar is a moon of Cephalon and that a prolonged eclipse has enabled astral spirits to spread. It shelters 53 awakened survivors, but Elos's lower mana may reduce them to mindless creatures. Taking the name Endless Meadow, it trains Ilea's space magic while Ilea develops arcane resistance in the refugees. Michael collaborates on the technical problem, but Hector attacks Endless Meadow and is expelled. Human authorities offer little help, and the Golden Lily general refuses responsibility for nonhuman lives. After roughly two months, the survivors can endure the crossing. Ilea tests the route with Zarevika, then carries all 53 through the gate and north in guarded groups. Catelyn welcomes their four peoples under Hallowfort's laws and guarantees housing, protection, and opportunity. Ilea gives Catelyn an emergency mark. The refugees are safe, but Endless Meadow must remain in Erendar long enough to close the gate before Cephalon's daughters descend.
Story so far - through chapter 82 (this book)
Ilea confirms that her improved teleportation can carry a small living passenger and resolves to use that insight to save Endless Meadow. The guardian has only weeks before it must close the gate, an act expected to weaken it and draw Cephalon's daughters. Ilea recruits a four-mark ice elemental through visual communication, then trains relentlessly under both ancient beings. She advances spatial perception and Phase Shift, learns to distinguish magical frameworks, escapes tested anti-teleportation fields, and isolates astral spirits from their shared mana-drain network. Her first solo astral kill leads to many more, pushing both main classes above level 400. Felicia remains with the Imperial campaign against Baralia while Ilea concentrates on Erendar. By the time Endless Meadow calls her back for the closure, Ilea has reached level 438 as an Azarinth Sentinel, 435 as Kin of Ash, and 355 in her additional class. She believes she can assist, though the expected attackers remain vastly above ordinary human opponents.
Story so far - through chapter 86 (this book)
Michael asks Ilea to recover his copies' observations as Endless Meadow raises a runic monolith around the gate. A four-mark Daughter of Cephalon attacks immediately. Ilea and the ancient ice elemental hold it off, but a second Daughter arrives with gravity magic and a mass of astral projectiles. Ilea redirects the second creature's attack into the first, and the ice elemental repeatedly rescues her while she heals it. Endless Meadow completes the closure, releasing a contained storm that devastates the gathered spirits. The guardian compresses itself into a stone form, and Ilea recovers two notebooks from Michael's dead copies before the last copy also dies. Ilea successfully carries Endless Meadow through her return teleportation to Elos. The ice elemental stays in Erendar. The gate is completely gone when Ilea checks its former site. She takes Endless Meadow north, where Hallowfort accepts it as an ally and gives it a cavern between the town and the Descent. The guardian transforms the cavern into a living habitat and offers warning and protection to both nearby locations.
How does it end? (ending)
Ilea completes the evacuation of Erendar's 53 awakened survivors, delivering them to Hallowfort and securing Catelyn's protection for their four peoples. She then returns to help Endless Meadow close the realm gate. Ilea and the ancient ice elemental defend the closure monolith against two Daughters of Cephalon, and the resulting storm devastates the attacking spirits. Michael's copies die after documenting the event, leaving two notebooks with Ilea. The ice elemental remains in Erendar, while Ilea transports Endless Meadow to Elos in a reduced stone form. The gate disappears without residue. Hallowfort accepts Endless Meadow as an ally and gives it a mana-rich cavern between the settlement and the Descent. Ravenhall's Medic Sentinels and Taleen research continue, but Kyrian remains unreachable. Eve's murder, Helena's wider agenda, the Order of Truth's remaining plans, Baralia's war, the active Taleen production site, and Erendar's surviving dangers remain unresolved.
