In short (whole book)
Ilea returns from the North with ancient wealth and a Taleen Gate Key, helps establish Ravenhall's independence project and the Medic Sentinel Corps, and enables Aki to inhabit a Guardian body. In Riverwatch she liberates Stormbreach, exposes the Gray Company's trade in captives, clears Kevin, and links cursed Serethil hunters with a possible trade partner. A corruption emergency then draws her into the Descent. She traces the outbreak to Project Animus, rescues a Fae, reunites with Catelyn's expedition, and helps an uncorrupted magma creature destroy the corrupted sand elemental. Continuing deeper with the Fae, she disperses a mana-concentrating system and barely escapes an Ascended. The Fae collective attributes Elos's lost third sun and the North's devastation to an ancient Ascended extraction project. Ilea returns to Ravenhall at level 345 in both classes, while Kyrian, the Ascended, inter-realm travel, and several ancient systems remain unresolved.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Ilea Spears, a realm traveler from Earth, became a powerful Azarinth battle healer and ash mage on Elos. She built close ties with Ravenhall, the Shadow's Hand, Riverwatch, and allies across the North. Her missing companion Kyrian remains a central concern. Eve disappeared in the course of examining the Golden Lily, leaving that inquiry unresolved. Adam Strand was established as the cause of an earlier demon crisis, but his purpose and destination remain unknown. Ravenhall survived major upheaval and now supports Ilea's public identity, Lilith, along with her growing businesses and political influence. In the North, Ilea explored ancient Taleen sites, fought advanced machines, gained a Gate Key that may help locate Kyrian, and formed ties with Serethil hunters. She also met the former rulers of Tremor and recovered access to their abandoned kingdom. The wider history linking the Taleen, old magical facilities, realm travelers, and the Ascended remains incomplete.
Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)
Ilea leaves a Taleen dungeon with a Gate Key that may eventually lead to Kyrian. She and the ancient necromancer-king recover Tremor's vault, securing wealth, enchanted equipment, and rare materials for Ravenhall and their northern allies. The former king lays his undead guard captain to rest and finds a journal describing unknown runes connected to the Soul Rippers. He then abandons any intention of ruling again and travels south with Ilea, while the ancient queen remains in Hallowfort. Niivalyr translates a Taleen diary that describes an old alliance against the Ascended and a later conflict between the Taleen and elven domains. Hallowfort gives Ilea an emergency calling sphere amid concern over an overdue Descent expedition. During the journey south, Ilea hunts powerful mist creatures, trains against storms and death magic, and advances both classes to level 310. She reaches Ravenhall with the former king, the recovered treasure, and several unresolved leads from the North.
Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)
Back in Ravenhall, Ilea reclaims her public Lilith identity and gives Kayla ownership of the Golden Drake while proposing future restaurant ventures. Cless's magical paintings confirm that Kyrian is alive but trapped in an unknown location, and Claire places the Taleen Gate Key with researchers as a possible route to him. Claire also advances a negotiated plan for Ravenhall to govern itself through a council. Ilea joins that council, while Dagon and Elise pursue the political work. Trian accepts operational leadership of the new Medic Sentinel Corps, which will train combat-capable healers outside the established orders. Research links Aki's dagger form to Taleen Guardian runes. With a Guardian body supplied for the experiment and Iana guiding the transfer, Ilea moves Aki into the machine. He awakens in the Guardian body but cannot yet control its limbs safely. A delayed request from Dale then draws Ilea and the former king toward troubled Riverwatch.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
Ilea reaches Riverwatch during a period of monster attacks, refugee pressure, murdered officials, and political deadlock. Alistair Gallion sends her to investigate Stormbreach, where organized demons and compelled patrols serve an occupying ruler. Collin Rey guides her through Sanctuary tunnels to the weakened Lady of Benevolence, a blood spirit who has protected the city. Ilea restores the Lady with her regenerated blood, kills the two mind weavers controlling the survivors, and defeats the level-340 Frenzy King. Stormbreach is liberated, though only about a hundred survivors remain. Collin and the Lady commit to rebuilding the city and offer future aid to Ilea and the Medic Sentinels. Ilea returns to Riverwatch and directs refugees toward the recovering Sanctuary.
Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)
Alistair privately asks Ilea to investigate a refugee's murder and disappearances tied to powerful Riverwatch interests. The principal suspect, Kevin, denies the killing and joins her search. Vin reveals that her foster father died while investigating the Gray Company and provides a warehouse location. Ilea infiltrates the company's underground prison as Lilith, posing as a buyer until she can protect the captives and learn more. She frees them, kills the armed slavers, and captures co-owner Mason. The company's records expose extensive collaborators and clear Kevin in practice. Cursed Serethil hunters kill Mason when they learn he traded people, explaining that they wanted supplies rather than captives. Ilea trains with their powerful fire, ice, wind, death, and soul magic, gaining Soul Magic Resistance. Alistair begins a crackdown using the seized evidence, while Walter opens cautious negotiations to become the hunters' trade intermediary. The Gray Company is destroyed, but wider Riverwatch instability persists.
Story so far - through chapter 52 (this book)
Catelyn's emergency sphere summons Ilea to Hallowfort, where orange corruption is spreading from creatures emerging out of the Descent. Normal healing cannot remove it, so Ilea cuts away infected tissue before restoring each wound. The defenders kill a level-783 Goliath Verimath after it becomes infected, and its tunnel helps concentrate the remaining attacks. Evidence suggests the outbreak is alchemical rather than ordinary blood or curse magic. With the first layer partially fortified, Ilea joins the First Layer Guardian, the ancient necromancer-king, Niivalyr, Catelyn's allies, and other specialists in a descent to find survivors and destroy the source. They seal routes behind them and pass increasingly dangerous layers. In the seventh, uncorrupted Shade Shredders nearly overwhelm the group. A later swarm of corrupted shredders forces them into a steel refuge, where Ilea repeatedly ventures outside to reduce the attackers. The party survives, but the missing expedition and the corruption's origin remain deeper below.
Story so far - through chapter 64 (this book)
The descent party finds an unexplained steel facility resembling other ancient sites, then continues through poisonous caverns and a wyvern-filled lair. A crude Red Church camp contains cages, blood experiments, and a journal about heroic blood. Ilea kills the camp's powerful, unstable guardian and separates from the party to hunt wyverns while the others proceed under concealment. Her new third-tier abilities improve her ash, perception, and defense against elemental attacks. Following signs left by the missing expedition, she crosses lightning, ice, and crystal layers filled with threats well above ordinary adventurers. An illusion of Eve proves to be bait from a giant predator rather than evidence that Eve survived. Ilea kills it and other dangerous creatures while still searching for her allies. She remains separated from the expedition and her allies, with no trail she can detect.
Story so far - through chapter 76 (this book)
In the lower Descent, Ilea contacts an ancient telepathic captive who explains that its stolen blood became the basis of the corruption. It asks her to save an infected Fae held in a sealed laboratory. Ilea removes the corruption and heals the small being, which chooses to travel with her as Little Guy. The Fae guides her onward and helps track the expedition. Ilea survives an exceptionally powerful Storm Griffin, clears hundreds of corrupted Xanadin Hunters, and develops stronger time, blood, flight, and space defenses. She follows fresh signs of her companions through further layers and kills a level-753 Fallen Hero. Meanwhile, separated expedition survivors unite with Catelyn, the First Layer Guardian, and their allies near the core of an ancient facility. Ilea is now close behind them with the Fae, while the ancient mind mage remains behind and its powerful missing friend is associated with sand and heat.
Story so far - through chapter 85 (this book)
Ilea reunites with Catelyn's expedition at Testing Facility Zeta. The Fae operates its runes, disables traps, and reveals that Project Animus created a blood-manipulation agent intended to help subjects survive a redacted atmosphere. The project failed, but its distribution system activated forty-two cycles earlier and caused the outbreak. Records also show that a corrupted sand elemental is expanding a storm through the twentieth layer. The group recruits a captive four-mark magma creature whose own manipulation-agent trial failed. Supported by the Fae, Catelyn, the ancient necromancer-king, and several mages, Ilea keeps the magma creature alive and cuts contamination from its wounds while it battles the elemental. Their combined lava, fire, barriers, death magic, and healing finally destroy the corrupted being. Ilea reaches level 345 in both classes, and the magma creature survives after the group removes its remaining contamination. The immediate Descent emergency is contained, though the facility builders and Project Animus's larger purpose remain unknown.
Story so far - through chapter 90 (this book)
Catelyn leads the rescued expedition upward, while Ilea remains with the Fae to explore and train. She reaches the requirements for third-tier general skills and advances Meditation, Heat Resistance, Mental Resistance, Poison Resistance, and Lightning Resistance. Her improved mental ability permits simple intentional communication with the Fae. Ilea returns to the ancient mind mage and reports that its corrupted elemental companion has been destroyed; the captive grieves but accepts that the corruption has ended. The Fae also establishes a peaceful training arrangement with a powerful young lightning elemental. These journeys confirm that the small Fae can understand ancient systems and communicate with unusual beings. The expedition crisis has ended, but Ilea and the Fae continue below the known layers, where the facility map and surviving systems point toward a much older and broader network.
Story so far - through chapter 95 (this book)
Ilea and the Fae explore the lowest layers, where dense raw mana forces Ilea to advance Arcane Magic Resistance to third tier. They find a vast rune-covered structure that unnaturally concentrates mana and helped create the Descent. Ilea lets the Fae channel its accumulated power through her, enduring severe physical, mental, and soul damage until the system is dispersed. In a final steel facility, records describe a completed extraction project and an active transport network. Accessing them brings a steel-bodied four-mark Ascended through the platform. It overwhelms Ilea with steel, space, void, and blood magic, but the Fae uses her mana to shield them and teleport away. At the Fae's hidden home, a larger collective says the Ascended removed Elos's third sun about three thousand years ago, devastating the North and helping drive the Azarinth and Taleen into another realm. The account remains the collective's testimony. It also says Ilea may eventually cross realms. Ilea preserves the Fae's soul-mark, gives her companion a Sentinel Mark, and returns to Ravenhall to brief Claire and Trian.
How does it end? (ending)
Ilea returns to Ravenhall after the Fae saves her from an Ascended in an ancient transport facility. She is level 345 in both classes, has reached several new third-tier resistances, and is nearing another class choice. The small Fae is part of a larger collective and carries Ilea's Sentinel Mark, which lets the Fae signal Ilea and provides its location, although its home conceals the exact position. Claire, Trian, and their partners continue Ravenhall's plans for self-rule, the Medic Sentinel Corps, and research into the Taleen Gate Key. Kyrian remains missing but is believed alive. Stormbreach is rebuilding, the Gray Company has been destroyed, and Hallowfort has survived the immediate Descent outbreak. The Ascended remains active, while the Fae collective's account connects the ruined North and the loss of Elos's third sun to an ancient extraction project. Inter-realm travel, Ilea's connection to Earth, the wider purpose of the facilities, and the Golden Lily investigation remain unresolved.
