In short (whole book)

Ilea strengthens Ravenhall's Medic Sentinels, joins Isalthar's exiled hunters, and helps uncover the buried Taleen capital, where a hostile guardian demands three keys or key wardens before granting deeper access. Iana, Christopher, and Endless Meadow later breach part of the gate network, allowing Ilea to find Kyrian alive after two years in the far north. He returns to Ravenhall and begins readjusting with Claire and Trian. Ilea also ends a rot crisis, frees captives from a Baralian fort, learns that Michael killed Eve after Eve killed Prim, and survives new four-mark threats in the ocean and on the northern isles. Victories over a sealed Terror and the Scorching Worm carry her through two level-500 evolutions, first from Azarinth Sentinel to Arcane Eternal and then from Kin of Ash to Ashen Titan. She leaves Kyrian and the dragonling elf hunting on the Crawon Isles and returns home to train with Endless Meadow, while the Taleen keys, Zoe's trail, the capital, and several ancient gate mysteries remain open.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Ilea Spears, also publicly known as Lilith, became a powerful battle healer with three classes and founded the Medic Sentinels in Ravenhall. Her allies include the administrator Claire, headmaster Trian, the sentient dagger Aki, and the enchanters Iana and Christopher. Her contact with ancient powers and Taleen machinery left her carrying an unusual tungsten key and searching for answers about the machine civilization and its gates. Endless Meadow, a telepathic four-mark tree with healing and space magic, became an important ally. Kyrian, Ilea's former companion from the Shadow's Hand, remained missing after an emergency transfer. The deaths and conflicts surrounding Eve, the Golden Lily, Erendar, and Baralia also left unresolved political and personal debts. As the new volume begins, Ilea is strong enough to confront threats beyond most human forces, Ravenhall is building lasting institutions around the Sentinels, and the search for Kyrian is increasingly tied to understanding Taleen teleportation technology.

Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)

Ilea settles Endless Meadow near Hallowfort, where the four-mark tree agrees to protect the settlement and investigate surviving evidence connected to the Ascended. She reconnects with elven hunters clearing a Taleen facility, but Ravenhall's council declines to support them officially. In Ravenhall, Trian and Aki oversee the first Medic Sentinel hunter examination. Vienna's three-person team survives Ilea's hidden role as the final threat, correctly choosing retreat over a hopeless objective, and becomes the corps' first team cleared for outside assignments. Ilea then asks Ravenhall to consider Endless Meadow as an ally in the gate project. The council approves a controlled delegation made up of Ilea, Iana, Christopher, and other representatives. At Hallowfort, the enchanters establish a workshop with Endless Meadow and begin studying prototype platforms and translated material. Ravenhall and Hallowfort reach preliminary terms for shared control of any resulting technology, trade, and non-conflict. Iana and Christopher remain behind to continue the research, while Ilea prepares to meet Isalthar's exiled hunters without official Ravenhall backing.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

Seeking stronger opponents, Ilea enters an ancient city beneath the Kroll Mountains and awakens the Queen of Rot. The four-mark entity spreads corruption toward the settlement above and repeatedly overwhelms Ilea with blood, bone, and tracking magic. Ilea learns how to disrupt its most dangerous spell, raises her resistance to rot, and eventually wins a prolonged battle of attrition. The threat fades, and a young inn worker named Willa asks to follow Lilith's example. Ilea brings her to Ravenhall, where she enters the Medic Sentinel Corps. Helena then offers Ilea membership in the Golden Lily and questions her recent increase in power, but Ilea gives no decision. A separate danger appears beneath Ravenhall when smugglers disturb trapped ruins. Ilea leads two Shadow teams through teleporting monsters, lethal mechanisms, and a chamber of ancient constructs. Beyond the cleared defenses lies a cavern filled with inactive rune-covered archways. Ravenhall seals the unidentified passageway network instead of activating it, leaving its origin and destinations unknown.

Story so far - through chapter 22 (this book)

The Medic Sentinels move toward public operation as more trainees qualify for missions, allowing Ilea to leave Ravenhall and pursue the elven hunter alliance. Ben guides her through the Navali Forest and explains that young exiles have fought intensifying Taleen attacks for generations while rejecting the domains' treatment of their own youths. Ilea reunites with Isalthar and the dragonling elf at a deactivated gate. Isalthar confirms that the Taleen network is being actively manipulated and agrees to investigate a northern production site. During the journey, Ilea trains with the dragonling elf and learns that Isalthar's aim extends beyond destroying machines to changing elven society. The combined hunters reach the active gate, recruit the local team, and cross into a vast underground production complex. Isalthar divides the party into scouting groups while Ilea attacks a huge active production hall defended by large numbers of Taleen war machines. The hunters commit to dismantling the operation despite its scale and the unanswered question of who now controls it.

Story so far - through chapter 27 (this book)

Inside the production facility, Ilea and the dragonling elf face an Executioner Praetorian whose adaptive attacks penetrate her defenses and briefly kill her before her healing restores her. They survive through close cooperation and Isalthar's intervention against the machine's rupturing core. Further exploration reveals dangerous mind magic and experimental machine variants. A half-built construct addresses Ilea as a Key Warden, connecting her tungsten key to Taleen authority, though its exact purpose remains unknown. The expedition's position then collapses when two young hunters betray the group. They use a gate to lead Isalthar and his allies into an ambush by the four-mark ruler of the Sky Domain and an armored warrior. The attackers overpower Ilea, the dragonling elf, and Isalthar. Ilea manages to extract her allies back into the Taleen dungeon and prevents Isalthar's capture, after which the survivors withdraw through the facility network. The failed ambush leaves the hunters exposed to the domains and convinces Ilea that stronger space magic and greater personal power are necessary before another such confrontation.

Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)

Ilea returns to Endless Meadow, where Iana and Christopher test experimental teleportation platforms and examine the tungsten key. The devices remain fatal to ordinary travelers, but Ilea can survive them, and the key may influence the destination of an unconnected gate. After resistance training, she rejoins the hunters for a long campaign through the southern Taleen facility. She and the dragonling elf eventually defeat another Executioner, and the group activates a surviving gate while Ilea carries the key. It strands them inside an immense machine city beneath Karth, later identified as the hidden Taleen capital. Stolen records confirm that twelve keys once served important trusts. A disembodied guardian recognizes Ilea as a Key Warden but refuses meaningful access without three keys or three key wardens. It treats her elven allies as enemies and mobilizes the entire city. The hunters cannot withstand the resulting army. Protected by the others during a long casting, Ilea completes a group displacement and evacuates everyone. They survive with valuable knowledge, but the capital and its central golden sphere remain inaccessible without more keys and far greater force.

Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)

Back in Ravenhall, Ilea reports the capital and introduces the dragonling elf to Claire, Trian, and Aki. Claire warns that cooperation with the hunters could draw retaliation, while Ilea argues that humanity needs allies against powers it cannot face alone. The war in Baralia has officially ended, though rebuilding and resistance continue. Endless Meadow and the enchanters begin considering a locator for the other Taleen keys. Ilea's growing harmony with her class magic improves her ash control, and she continues training against stronger creatures. Trian then asks her to find a missing Medic Sentinel. Ilea and the dragonling elf track him into a poison-filled mine, where he is sheltering fifteen war refugees after a battle damaged the old protections. Ilea evacuates the group, arranges local assistance, and advises the Sentinel to control his rage before future evolutions. The refugees learn that Baralia has fallen and receive support through the Empire's integration effort. Ilea and her companion remain behind to finish the mine, while Aki's possible transfer into a stronger Taleen body is deferred until it can be tested safely.

Story so far - through chapter 52 (this book)

Ilea and the dragonling elf clear the mine, then take contracts in former Baralia. At a fortified slaving operation, they find starving captives, blood-magic experiments, and surviving soldiers of the old regime. The Imperial scout Paulson is maimed during the fighting, but Ilea restores his arm, kills the leading threats, frees the prisoners, and transfers the fort and its evidence to Imperial custody. She and her companion also destroy vengeful spirits and cursed remnants left by the war. In the capital, Felicia helps Ilea manage the political attention surrounding Lilith and the Medic Sentinels. Michael approaches through an expendable copy and reveals that he killed Eve after finding Prim dead from Eve's attack. Ilea releases the copy and postpones retaliation. Soon afterward, Iana and Christopher complete an intrusion key, a partial Taleen-network mapping method, and a locator for related keys. At an old island gate, the system displays emergency activations linked to Ilea, Zoe, and Kyrian. The recovered destinations narrow Kyrian's possible location to two remote northern sites, giving Ilea her first practical route to search for him.

Story so far - through chapter 58 (this book)

Using the compromised network, Ilea's group reaches a northern facility bearing signs that Zoe passed through, but defers that trail to prioritize Kyrian. At the second destination, recent warnings and route markers lead Ilea and the dragonling elf to a keep on storm-ravaged isles. Kyrian is alive after roughly two years alone. He survived Arthur's emergency transfer, gained a third class, developed regeneration, teleportation, metal manipulation, and curse magic, and learned to hunt the region's powerful creatures. He also rescued several soul-magic birds. After fighting northern blue tails with Ilea and the elf, Kyrian agrees to return to Ravenhall. Ilea marks him, brings him and the birds back to Elos, and reunites him with Claire and Trian. His heightened senses and long isolation make crowds and ordinary life difficult, so Trian offers quiet housing, sparring, and a gradual role around the Medic Sentinels. Meanwhile, Iana and Christopher continue copying the Taleen network map. The group now has a strategic foothold in the gates, but still cannot challenge the capital or account for Zoe.

Story so far - through chapter 65 (this book)

Ilea turns to the ocean, deliberately confronting her fear of deep water while hunting northern blue tails. She kills increasingly dangerous specimens, including a four-mark mature blue tail, but an immense Flesh-stricken Leviathan appears after the victory. It does not attack, yet its awareness drives her from the depths and leaves the deep ocean as a new unresolved danger. Kyrian continues settling into Ravenhall, reunites with people from his former life, and considers helping the Sentinels with survival training. Ilea's core allies agree not to move against Michael immediately, despite what he did to Eve, because of his power, political connections, and earlier assistance. Ilea then returns to the northern isles with Kyrian, the dragonling elf, and a wood-mage healer. In an old trapped keep they find Taleen remains, hostile former inhabitants, and a chained four-mark Terror. The group's combined curses, white fire, roots, healing, and close combat defeat it. The victory raises Azarinth Sentinel to level 500. Ilea chooses Arcane Eternal, gaining agelessness, vastly greater mana, stronger healing and regeneration, and major improvements to her strikes, transfer magic, perception, and control of a battlefield.

Story so far - through chapter 72 (this book)

Ilea tests Arcane Eternal while the group moves deeper into the volcanic isles. Her upgraded marks permit brief long-distance messages, Transfer improves her movement, and Arcane Dominion lets her harm or reconstruct targets within its reach. After battling powerful stone creatures, she faces a level-1238 Scorching Worm alone in a lava cavern. Its sun-like heat spell renders her unconscious, but her resistance advances enough for her to survive. A horned tunneling serpent attacks the worm, and Ilea joins it, destroys the worm's heart, and shares the kill without fighting her temporary ally. The victory brings Kin of Ash to level 500. She evolves it into Ashen Titan, gaining a denser body, stronger ash armor, immunity to hostile stunning, heat storage, delayed explosive attacks, remote ash control, and weight-linked resilience. After testing ash copies and guided weapons, Ilea leaves a modified gate key with the dragonling elf and establishes a transfer anchor on the Crawon Isles. Kyrian and the elf remain there to hunt. Ilea returns to her seaside home, planning to seek Endless Meadow's training in space magic while the Taleen capital, remaining keys, Zoe's trail, ancient gates, Michael, and the wider elven conflict remain unresolved.

How does it end? (ending)

Ilea closes the volume as Arcane Eternal level 503, Ashen Titan level 500, and Fae and Valkyrie level 465. She establishes a transfer anchor on the Crawon Isles, leaves a modified gate key with the dragonling elf, and returns to her seaside home to seek Endless Meadow's help training her new abilities and space magic. Kyrian has returned from two years of isolation, reunited with Claire and Trian, and begun rebuilding a life in Ravenhall, though he continues hunting on the isles. Iana, Christopher, and Endless Meadow possess an intrusion key, a partial map of the Taleen network, and a key locator, but the buried capital remains beyond their strength and still demands three keys or key wardens. Zoe's trail, the other keys, the gate-like ruins, and the ocean Leviathan remain unresolved. Ilea also postpones any action against Michael after learning that he killed Eve following Eve's attack on Prim. Isalthar's hunters remain opposed to the Taleen machines and the elven domains, while Ravenhall's Medic Sentinels continue expanding.
