In short (whole book)
After helping Trian punish the Birmingham members responsible for his household's massacre, Ilea joins an assault on Arthur Redleaf and loses Kyrian when Arthur's unstable Taleen gate scatters the group. She leaves Ravenhall for the North to gain enough strength to search for him. There she establishes allies in Hallowfort, explores Tremor and the Descent, frees an imprisoned Fae, discovers an active Taleen factory, and learns that Tremor's ancient royal couple remain bound to the city's undead machinery. Ilea reaches level 300, evolving into an Azarinth Sentinel and Kin of Ash, then defeats the Kingsguards and frees the necromancer-king. With northern allies, she repels coordinated attacks on Awakened settlements and destroys two Taleen Praetorians. A hidden Great Hall chamber yields a Taleen Gate Key, giving her the first practical lead toward Kyrian. She intends to finish Tremor's vaults and return south while the queen, the Golden Lily, the Taleen mystery, and the northern war remain unresolved.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Ilea is an Azarinth battle-healer, explorer, and member of the Shadow's Hand. Her close companions include Kyrian, a metal-and-curse mage; Trian, a Virilyan noble and lightning mage; Claire, the team's tactician; Eve, a covert killer and investigator; and Aki, a sentient dagger. Ilea also treats the telepathic demon Weavy, known as the Mind Weaver, as an ally. A demon crisis has devastated western settlements, displaced survivors and monsters, interrupted the team's work, and left Eve missing. Ravenhall is rebuilding after the upheaval, with Claire taking a role in its administration.
Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)
Ilea, Kyrian, and Weavy reach the Vulture's Brotherhood refuge after Weavy accepts an orphaned boy with mind-magic talent as his apprentice. The Brotherhood agrees to shelter them despite lingering fear of demons. Ilea and Kyrian then aid Riverwatch's overstretched guards before returning toward Ravenhall. There, Claire is helping direct reconstruction and begins a business venture with Ilea. A sealed warning from Eve reports that Trian's household has been attacked and connects the discovery to the Golden Lily. Ilea and Kyrian find Trian alive at his ruined estate, then uncover three hidden survivors: his younger sister, an adopted ward, and their badly cursed protector. Claire secretly receives them in Ravenhall and arranges protection. Because the attackers used tailored counters, the team suspects a powerful noble house, but has no confirmed culprit. Claire persuades Trian to pursue proof before retaliation and prepares safe inns, cover identities, contacts, and routes for a covert inquiry. Ilea, Kyrian, Trian, and Aki are ready to enter Virilya, find Eve, and identify those responsible.
Story so far - through chapter 15 (this book)
Operating covertly in Virilya, Ilea's group secures armor and helps six detained craftworkers escape the capital. Their search leads to Eve's concealed room, where they find her murdered after she killed a dangerous target and hid documents. Her papers concern corrupt nobles, the Golden Lily, and Edwin Redleaf, whose group is also attacking noble interests. Ilea saves Edwin from a blood-magic infection, and the two groups form an alliance: Edwin's allies will help Trian identify his targets, while Ilea's team will help them pursue Arthur Redleaf. Their evidence strongly implicates House Birmingham in the massacre. During a wider siege of the capital, Ilea, Kyrian, Trian, Maria, and Edwin raid the Birmingham estate. Bale, Ronin, Petra, and Graham die, but Ilea and Kyrian stop Trian from killing Wallace and two young girls. Wallace is spared and leaves with Anya and Hera. Ilea then turns from the reprisal to rescuing civilians amid bombardment, demons, and enemy assassins. Eve's killer, the Golden Lily's purpose, and any wider sponsor remain unknown.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
After helping evacuate Virilya and delivering the Birmingham evidence to a trusted official, the allied group turns against Arthur Redleaf on the Isle of Gareth. Arthur activates an unstable Taleen gate during the battle, scattering Ilea, Kyrian, and one of his warriors. Ilea escapes a distant Taleen dungeon and returns, but Kyrian does not. Felicia and Aliana kill Arthur, and the survivors defeat his remaining hunters. Arthur's records show that the device sends travelers unpredictably between Taleen gates, leaving no immediate way to trace Kyrian. Ilea recruits Arthur's enchanter and willing vegetation mages for Ravenhall, where Claire agrees to support gate research and treats Kyrian as missing rather than dead. Felicia remains to manage the Redleaf estate, while Edwin, Maria, and the others separate from Ilea's path. Trian stays in Ravenhall with his surviving sister, adopted ward, and protector. Aki also remains to investigate its own nature with an enchantress. Believing she needs far greater strength before attempting a rescue, Ilea leaves Ravenhall alone for the far North.
Story so far - through chapter 34 (this book)
Ilea crosses the northern mountains through lethal arcane storms and predator-filled ravines. In an ancient subterranean city, she meets a solitary elf who offers knowledge in exchange for books and relics recovered from the nearby Tremor dungeon. Tremor contains an abandoned human city guarded by undead Knights of the Rose and far stronger Kingsguards. Ilea defeats individual knights but learns that the palace guards can cut through her armor, ash, and body. Seeking equipment and local support, she follows a dwarf pilot through concealed tunnels to Hallowfort, a hidden underground settlement, where he offers to introduce her to a smith.
Story so far - through chapter 46 (this book)
Weeks of hunting Tremor's undead raise Ilea's levels and improve her ability to bypass their defenses. She recruits a dwarven scavenger and lock specialist to investigate the palace. He detects a common magical source linking the guarded doors and undead, then quietly breaks into the central vault with her. Inside, they find ancient machinery drawing power from a living man and holding a living woman. The woman is Tremor's long-imprisoned queen; the man is her betrothed, the kingdom's necromancer-king. Guard Captain Reyker's translated record and the queen's account describe a kingdom ruined by war, changing dungeons, and Soul Rippers. Ilea heals the king awake. He confirms that Tremor has become a dungeon and that its power has displaced his control of the undead, leaving him unable to depart while the guards remain. He offers resources, knowledge, and possible travel help if Ilea and the dwarf free the royal pair. Judging the Kingsguards too strong for her, he advises Ilea to seek varied dangerous opponents and reach level 300 before confronting them or entering more dangerous Taleen sites in search of Kyrian.
Story so far - through chapter 54 (this book)
Ilea makes Hallowfort her base while pursuing the level-300 goal. In the upper Descent she hunts Blue Reapers, high-level creatures using lightning and mind magic, and gains levels and resistances through repeated near-fatal fights. A fox-like Awakened alchemist becomes her buyer, and Ilea tests the alchemist's experimental potions. She then moves into the Descent's layered ruins, learning that its deeper sections include trapped insect tunnels, flooded passages, and a dangerous ruined city. In the second layer, Ilea tests poisoned traps and the burst-healing potential of Hunter Recovery, kills the mud goblin responsible for traps, and holds off a swarm of giant roaches. She rescues an unconscious cat-like healer and a dwarf warrior in heavy mechanical armor, but remains lost in the tunnels.
Story so far - through chapter 63 (this book)
The rival treasure hunters attack after their leader uses mind magic against Ilea's companions. Ilea defeats them without killing them, then parts from the surviving explorers after a long nonlethal duel with their lizard warrior. Alone in the Red Church complex, she trains against Old-Blooded venom and finds a caged Fae hidden behind a trapped wall. She frees the ancient arcane spirit and uncovers records showing that the Red Church used Fae essence and pure blood in lethal experiments. The Fae briefly follows Ilea back to Hallowfort, where Goliath recognizes it as a revered spirit of old, then departs freely. Ilea turns next to her fear of Taleen machines. She recruits the elven historian and a dwarf guide for a dungeon expedition, though the elf refuses to enter. Inside, Ilea encounters a Taleen Centurion and begins fighting it alone while the dwarf stays back.
Story so far - through chapter 71 (this book)
Ilea destroys the Centurions threatening three young elven hunters, heals them, and defeats them when they claim the dungeon. The older elven historian takes responsibility for training the inexperienced group. Deeper inside, Ilea and her dwarf companion discover an immense active Taleen factory producing Centurions and other war machines. Ilea spends weeks thinning its defenders while the machines adapt their tactics. A supervised test shows that the young hunters still cannot defeat a Centurion safely, and the historian restricts them to the adjacent Taleen city. The hunters explain that elves entering such creation sites are branded cursed, while their people remain at war with Taleen machines. In Hallowfort, reports of hostile northern forces prompt defensive preparations. The fox alchemist, also a council member, agrees to inspect the imprisoned queen's enchantments but refuses to face the Kingsguards. Goliath proposes using one of his personal teleportation obelisks so he can enter and inspect the factory once Ilea places it there. By the end of this period Ilea is nearing level 300, the queen has gained a potential source of technical help, and the active factory remains an unresolved regional threat.
Story so far - through chapter 79 (this book)
Once Centurions stop providing useful growth, Ilea returns to Tremor's Dark Zone and begins hunting far stronger Undead Rose Knights. The fights repeatedly maim and even decapitate her, but her healing lets her recover and eventually wear down opponents above level 500. Avoiding the still more dangerous Soul Rippers, she reaches level 300 in both classes. Ilea evolves Azarinth First Hunter into Azarinth Sentinel, gaining stronger healing, physical enhancement, and destructive abilities. She then evolves Inheritor of Eternal Ash into Kin of Ash, deepening her control of ash, defense, and close combat. Tests show that her shaped ash can pierce stone, her new armor can withstand attacks that previously threatened her, and her healing can rapidly restore devastating injuries. She challenges the palace Kingsguards, using the evolved skills to survive their varied magic and eliminate guards who had once been untouchable. The last enhanced defenders remain the final barrier between the captive necromancer-king and freedom.
Story so far - through chapter 83 (this book)
Ilea defeats the remaining Kingsguards, restoring the ancient necromancer-king's agency and ending the palace system's hold over Tremor. The king's treasury remains sealed because its key was left with an old friend, so Ilea, the king, and the dwarven companion travel to a northern Awakened settlement. There, Ilea treats varied wounded residents and helps the king investigate his friend's mansion. A level-540 Undying Lord admits it killed the friend long ago; Ilea destroys the death spirit, allowing the king to recover the remains and the small golden treasury key. An elder of Ilea's organization then confirms that Adam Strand caused the earlier demon crisis, though the motive is unknown. The elder is studying the North's ecological collapse and attempting a slow restoration. The king's memory that the world once had three suns may bear on that mystery, but remains unverified. With the treasury key recovered and her new power tested, Ilea is ready to resume her Taleen investigations.
Story so far - through chapter 88 (this book)
A coordinated reptilian army attacks the underground Awakened settlement after rejecting negotiation. Ilea and the necromancer-king join its defense, protecting civilians and routing the invading force. Recovered plans reveal simultaneous assaults on other Awakened strongholds, including Hallowfort. Ilea, the king, and the dwarven companion immediately travel there and find the settlement devastated, with survivors barricaded in the Abyss. Ilea heals the wounded before joining the battle below. Alongside the fox alchemist, the king, and the dwarf, she defeats an elite strike team that appears to have targeted the fox and her fire-related power. Hallowfort survives, but the attackers' faction and bases remain unknown, and the regional war is widening. The fox promises Ilea future support, plans stronger defenses, and intends to aid the wider Awakened war effort financially. After treating the remaining wounded and recovering enemy equipment, Ilea's group prepares to return to Tremor, with Ilea now above level 300 in both evolved classes.
Story so far - through chapter 93 (this book)
Back at Tremor, Ilea receives a request from the elven mentor: the three young hunters have entered a Taleen Great Hall and failed to return. She finds them trapped in battle with two level-600 Praetorians. The mentor enters despite the curse imposed on elves who enter such sites, and the necromancer-king and dwarven companion arrive to help. Working together, the group cripples both machines and survives their final arcane blast. The hunters clear the remaining lesser constructs, and the mentor accepts hunter status after acknowledging his own excessive restrictions. Behind the throne, the group discovers a diary describing lost control over Taleen guardians and a mysterious tungsten key. A further concealed room contains a Taleen Gate Key. Ilea survives its traps and claims the artifact for study in Ravenhall, where it may finally provide a way to trace Kyrian through the teleportation network. She plans to finish the current Great Hall and Tremor vault exploration before returning south. The necromancer-king offers to accompany her, while Kyrian's fate, Eve's killer, the Golden Lily, the queen's confinement, and the northern war remain open.
How does it end? (ending)
Ilea ends the book above level 300 as an Azarinth Sentinel and Kin of Ash. She has freed Tremor's ancient necromancer-king, recovered the key to his treasury, helped repel attacks on two Awakened settlements, and joined her northern allies in destroying two level-600 Taleen Praetorians. The queen remains bound while Hallowfort allies work on her enchantments. The elven mentor and three young hunters survive, with the mentor now accepting hunter status, and the dwarven companion remains with Ilea. In Ravenhall, Claire continues supporting the search for Kyrian, Trian stays with his surviving household, Aki pursues answers about its nature, and Weavy and his apprentice have refuge. Ilea holds a Taleen Gate Key that may provide a route to Kyrian, who remains missing after Arthur Redleaf's unstable gate scattered the assault party. She plans to finish exploring Tremor's vaults before returning south, possibly with the necromancer-king. Eve's killer, the Golden Lily, Adam Strand's motive, the queen's release, the Taleen control mystery, and the widening northern war all remain unresolved.
