Ethniu, the Last Titan, and King Corb's Fomor armies rise out of Lake Michigan to destroy Chicago in a single night. The Eye of Balor blacks out the city, and an alliance of everything Harry has ever befriended or bargained with - Winter's legions under Mab, Marcone's einherjar and Valkyries, the White Court, svartalves, Wardens, the Knights Sanya and Butters, River Shoulders' Forest People, and Chicago's own defenders - fights block by block against giants, kraken, and warrior-priests. Karrin Murphy, fighting despite her injuries, is killed by a panicked gunshot from Detective Rudolph; Butters barely stops Harry from murdering him. The allies bleed the Titan, Marcone is revealed as the host of the fallen angel Thorned Namshiel, and at the lakeshore the assembled powers batter Ethniu until Harry can bind her into Demonreach's prison. Chicago survives, half-broken, with the supernatural half-exposed to the world. In the aftermath the White Council expels Harry; he learns Justine has long been possessed by Nemesis - the true hand behind Thomas's crime - and she escapes; and Mab decrees Harry's engagement to Lara Raith. The book ends at Murphy's funeral.

Previously in the series: Harry Dresden - Chicago's wizard, the Winter Knight, warden of the prison-island Demonreach - has just watched a peace conference become a declaration of war. The Fomor, the sea-kingdom that spent a decade raiding humanity, proposed talks with the Accords nations in Chicago, hosted by the svartalves; there, Harry's half-brother Thomas Raith inexplicably tried to assassinate the svartalf king Etri and was captured, his motive unspoken. Harry and Lara Raith - to whom Mab has bound Harry for two favors - broke Thomas out, fighting past Ebenezar McCoy, Harry's grandfather, who hates the White Court and does not know Thomas is his grandson too. Harry sealed the dying Thomas in Demonreach's stasis, beyond both death and rescue, while Justine, pregnant with Thomas's child, waits. At the summit's close the Fomor unveiled Ethniu, the Last Titan, bearing the Eye of Balor: she declared she will destroy Chicago tonight as a lesson to humanity. Around Harry stand the survivors of his long war: Murphy, half-healed and armed anyway, finally his; the Knights Sanya and Butters, the latter bearing the reborn sword of light; Molly, secretly the Winter Lady; Marcone, the city's criminal Baron; and a White Council already moving to expel Harry. The battle for Chicago begins at once - this book picks up the same night Peace Talks ends.

The war for Chicago opens. Harry races to position ahead of the assault, and the first blow lands on the city itself: Ethniu unleashes the Eye of Balor to smash Chicago's power grid, dropping millions of people into a blacked-out night in which no phone works, no help is coming, and the things climbing out of Lake Michigan cannot be explained away. King Corb's Fomor host comes ashore in waves - warrior-priests and servitor legions, huntsmen, giants, and worse behind them - while the defenders execute the only plan there was time to make: hold the lines, bleed the advance, and keep the enemy from the heart of the city and its people. The alliance that answers is everything Harry's long, strange career has ever touched: Winter Sidhe under Mab's command, Marcone's fortress and his einherjar - the resurrected soldiers of Valhalla - with Valkyries running his command net, the White Court under Lara, svartalf war-machines, the Paranet's minor talents shepherding civilians, and Harry's own people: Murphy at his side with her weapons braced over her injuries, Butters with the Sword of Faith, the werewolves, and the little folk. The first engagements make the scale plain - this is not a monster problem, it is a war - and somewhere behind the advancing lines, the Titan herself has not yet even joined the fight.

The battle becomes block-by-block war through a darkened city. The defenders' lines bend and re-form: Winter's legions and the einherjar meet the Fomor's giants and kraken-spawn head-on, svartalf ordnance and Marcone's preparations exact their price, and Harry burns through power and tricks alike as a one-man fire brigade wherever the front cracks. Sanya arrives from across the world - a Knight of the Cross with a holy saber and a rifle, laughing at odds - and fights beside Butters, the two swords blazing in the dark. River Shoulders and the Forest People, whose entry into the Accords Harry once sponsored, wade into the enemy like walking hills, repaying the debt with interest. Ebenezar McCoy takes the field for the city with the full, terrifying weight of the Blackstaff, the rift between him and Harry set aside without being healed. The Wardens under Carlos Ramirez fight and bleed; friends are wounded, and not everyone holding a line comes back from it. Through it all the enemy's design tightens: Ethniu is walking toward the city's heart at her own pace, the Eye leveling whatever resists her, and every defender who can count understands that the allied host - dying bravely by inches - has no answer yet for the Titan herself.

The middle of the night grinds toward its crisis. The defenders trade space for time and lives for space: strongpoints fall and are retaken, the wounded stream toward Marcone's fortress - the one place built to endure a siege like this - and the allied commanders commit their reserves knowing there is nothing behind them. Ethniu's advance turns the lakefront into rubble, and engagements against her merely prove the arithmetic: no single power on the field can stand against the Eye and the bronze-armored immortal carrying it; whatever answer exists will have to be everyone, together, timed perfectly, and even then it will be a coin toss. Harry fights his own battle within the battle - Winter's mantle howling for slaughter, exhaustion stripping his judgment, Demonreach's power close but bound to the island and its terrible custody - while the people he loves keep stepping into harm's way faster than he can cover them. Murphy fights the whole way through it, half-rebuilt and wholly unwilling to be anywhere else, and she and Harry hold on to each other in the pauses. Amid the chaos the city's mortal machinery blunders into the war zone too - police, guardsmen, and terrified officials, some brave, some worse than useless - and among them, waving a badge and a gun he has no business holding, is Detective Rudolph.

The night takes its cruelest toll. In the chaos behind the lines, Karrin Murphy is killed - not by the Titan, not by the Fomor, but by Rudolph: panicked, incompetent, and armed, his negligent shot ends the life of the bravest defender Chicago had. Harry arrives to a grief that slides instantly toward murder, Winter's mantle and his own broken heart in perfect agreement, and what stops him is Waldo Butters - the Knight of Faith putting himself and the memory of who Karrin Murphy was between Harry and a killing she would never have wanted done in her name. Rudolph flees into the ruins of the night. There is no time to mourn: Mab herself compels her Knight back into function, because the city is still dying and the endgame has arrived. The allied powers commit to the only plan with any mathematics behind it - mass every heavyweight the alliance has and break the Titan by main force before dawn. As the great powers converge on the lakefront for the final phase, the alliance's hidden capabilities start coming off the books, and one of them rewrites Chicago's map of power: John Marcone, the mortal gangster who bought his way into the Accords, reveals gifts no mortal has - the Baron of Chicago has been carrying a Denarian coin, and the fallen angel Thorned Namshiel fights on the city's side tonight.

The lakefront becomes the anvil. Everything the alliance has left converges on Ethniu at the water's edge: Mab in her full wrath, the Erlking and the huntsmen of the Wild Hunt, one-eyed Vadderung trading blows like the god he used to be full-time, River Shoulders swinging with the strength of hills, Lara and her Court, Marcone burning with Namshiel's sorcery, the Knights and the Wardens and the einherjar - and Harry Dresden, holding the piece nobody else can: the island. Wave by wave, at staggering cost, the assembled powers strip the Titan of her guards, her momentum, and finally her invincibility, wearing down even the Eye's annihilating fire. Beaten to one knee but unkillable by anything present, Ethniu meets the answer Harry has carried all night: not death but custody. Reaching across the water to Demonreach, Harry brings the prison's power to bear and binds the Last Titan into the island's crystal cells - the Warden's authority used at last for exactly what Merlin built it to do, and a horror out of the dawn of the world goes into the dark below Lake Michigan. With their Titan gone the Fomor break; the survivors of the host are hunted back into the water, and somewhere in the rout King Corb's invasion dies as a going concern. Dawn comes up on a saved, shattered city - and on the accounting.

The accounting is long. Chicago's dead number in the tens of thousands, its skyline is broken, and the mortal world cannot entirely unsee what happened: officialdom constructs its explanations while millions of witnesses quietly know better - the old masquerade is cracked for good, and the supernatural nations must live in the world that follows. The White Council makes its choice about Harry Dresden: expulsion. The wizard who bound a Titan is cast out of the institution he bled for since he was sixteen, too frightening and too much Winter's to keep, leaving him - in the world's eyes - Mab's creature and nothing else. The Thomas affair finally yields its poisoned root: visiting Justine to speak of Thomas and the coming baby, Harry understands, mid-conversation and far too late, that Justine has been possessed by Nemesis - the Outsiders' contagion has been wearing the person Thomas loves, and it was the adversary that coerced Thomas into the attempt on Etri, the lever being the woman and child he could not risk. The infected Justine escapes Harry's reach, carrying Thomas's unborn child with her. Mab, closing the ledger on Winter's new alignments, announces her decree: to seal the alliance with the White Court, her Knight will marry Lara Raith - a betrothal neither party requested, effective a year hence. And at the end, the city and the story stop to bury Karrin Murphy - with Harry given reason, by powers kinder than the night was, to believe that her spirit has gone on to a warrior's reward. Grieving, expelled, betrothed, and jailer to a Titan, Harry Dresden remains what he has always been: Chicago's wizard.

Chicago stands, at a terrible price. Ethniu is not killed - she is bound: battered by the combined assault of Mab, the Erlking, Vadderung, River Shoulders, Lara, Marcone, and Harry's friends, the Titan is dragged down at the lakeshore and imprisoned in Demonreach's crystal cells by the island's power, with Harry as her jailer. The Fomor host is shattered and the city saved, but tens of thousands are dead, the skyline is broken, and the mortal world can no longer entirely pretend: the masquerade is cracked, with officialdom papering over what millions glimpsed. Karrin Murphy is dead - killed not by the enemy but by Rudolph's panicked, negligent gunshot - and only Butters, invoking who Murphy was, stopped Harry from murdering Rudolph on the spot; Harry is later given reason to believe her spirit has gone on to a warrior's reward. John Marcone stands revealed as host of the fallen angel Thorned Namshiel, a Denarian with a baron's army and a decade of preparation. The White Council formally expels Harry, leaving him Winter's creature in the world's eyes. The Thomas affair finally shows its roots: visiting the pregnant Justine, Harry realizes she has long been possessed by Nemesis - the adversary coerced Thomas into the Etri assassination - and the infected Justine escapes, carrying Thomas's child. And Mab, sealing Winter's new alliance, decrees that Harry will marry Lara Raith. Grieving, expelled, engaged against his will, and jailer to a Titan, Harry buries Murphy as the book ends.
