Valkyrie succeeds in making Alice's soul whole, only to learn that her family descends from the Faceless Ones, not the Ancients; Alice may be the prophesied Child of the Faceless Ones. Separately, Sebastian Tao's society succeeds in bringing Darquesse back. The immediate family crisis is repaired, but Darquesse's return, Alice's future, and the struggle for control of Roarhaven remain open.

Five years after the defeat of Darquesse, Valkyrie returned from an isolated life in America with severe guilt, anxiety, and unresolved trauma. She and Skulduggery uncovered an Anti-Sanctuary plot but could not prevent the resurrection of its leader, Abyssinia. The Neoteric Cadaverous Gant later abducted Valkyrie's little sister Alice and forced Valkyrie through a rescue attempt timed to end at midnight. Alice survived and Gant died, but Valkyrie could no longer avoid an older consequence of the Darquesse crisis: when she restored Alice to life years earlier, part of the child's soul remained missing. At the same time, Abyssinia recovered her long-confined son Caisson. Omen Darkly remains an occasional young ally, and Sebastian Tao is still gathering a secret society dedicated to returning Darquesse to the world.

Valkyrie's most urgent concern is no longer simply keeping Alice out of magical danger but finding a way to replace the missing part of her soul. She and Skulduggery follow uncertain leads into specialist knowledge about magical medicine and the treatment of minds and souls. Valkyrie continues to experience panic and intrusive memories, even as her growing closeness with Militsa gives her a relationship outside the detective partnership. Elsewhere, Abyssinia has Caisson beside her after his long imprisonment. She treats his recovery as inseparable from her larger claims about family and power, while his trauma makes him difficult for anyone, including his mother, to direct safely.

The search for a cure takes Valkyrie toward the institution connected to Caisson's confinement and to people willing to experiment on sorcerers rather than heal them. Doctor Nye's expertise offers possible answers about the soul but no trustworthy protection from the cost of using them. Skulduggery and the Sanctuary also have to respond to Abyssinia's preparations, which draw strength from old grievances and from the disputed importance of Caisson's ancestry. In Roarhaven, China's authority is challenged by competing political and religious interests, with Damocles Creed and the Church of the Faceless presenting an organized centre of power. Omen and Temper are again pulled into the widening danger.

Valkyrie's passage through the institution exposes her to manipulation, visions, and information that connects Alice's condition with much older questions about magical bloodlines. Solace, a woman with close knowledge of Caisson and Abyssinia, complicates the history on which Abyssinia bases her campaign. Valkyrie persists because leaving Alice incomplete is unacceptable to her, but the investigation worsens rather than relieves her own mental strain. While Skulduggery works to contain the external threat, Sebastian Tao and the Darquesse Society make progress on a separate operation intended to reach Darquesse and persuade her to return.

Abyssinia moves from preparation toward open confrontation, placing Caisson and her beliefs about his heritage at the centre of the conflict. The Sanctuary's response is weakened by political division in Roarhaven and by pressure beyond the sorcerer city. President Flanery accepts the guidance of the scarred Crepuscular Vies, who appears to serve him while keeping his own history and aims concealed. Valkyrie closes in on a method of repairing Alice's soul, but the same discoveries undermine what she believed about her family's descent from the Ancients. The battles against Abyssinia, the attempt to save Alice, and Sebastian's effort to recover Darquesse all approach their outcomes separately.

The final struggle destroys Abyssinia's campaign. Abyssinia and Caisson both die, ending her attempt to turn her restored life and recovered son into a new ruling line. Valkyrie secures the means to replace the missing portion of Alice's soul, and Alice is restored as a whole person. The knowledge gained in saving her overturns the family's old story: Valkyrie and Alice descend from the Faceless Ones rather than the Ancients. Alice's words about her future indicate that she may become the Child of the Faceless Ones and one day face an opposing Child of the Ancients. Sebastian Tao's society meanwhile succeeds in bringing Darquesse back into the world, accepting the enormous risk because they believe she will be needed. China retains power under pressure, Crepuscular continues his private work through Flanery, and Valkyrie remains active with Skulduggery while beginning a closer life with Militsa.

Abyssinia's campaign collapses in the final conflict, and both she and Caisson die, ending the restored leader's attempt to build a future around her son and her claimed dynasty. Valkyrie obtains what she needs to replace the missing part of Alice's soul, and Alice is made whole. The cure does not bring Valkyrie peace: evidence about her family reveals that their bloodline descends from the Faceless Ones rather than from the Ancients as they had believed. Alice's remarks about a future confrontation identify her as the potential Child of the Faceless Ones and leave that destiny unresolved. Sebastian Tao and the Darquesse Society complete their own mission and bring Darquesse back into the world, believing she will be needed against what is coming. China remains under political pressure in Roarhaven, Crepuscular Vies continues manipulating President Flanery, and Valkyrie moves forward with Skulduggery and Militsa while still relying on unhealthy ways of containing her trauma.
