In short (whole book)
Newly married, Jin and Meiling expand Fa Ram while Cai Xiulan struggles with guilt from the battle against Sun Ken. The household's care helps her recover and reach the Profound Realm. Bi De leaves to study scattered shrines, gains Yin and Miantiao as companions, and discovers that the Azure Hills contain a broken five-element formation. Wa Shi returns from hidden training able to take a dragonlike form, while Tigu survives a tribulation and becomes human. Meiling learns she is pregnant, heals a contamination crisis in Verdant Hill, and returns home. Lu Ri's search for Jin Jue reaches the region without exposing Jin, while Lu Ban remains concealed in Zang Li's stolen body. Bi De brings an ancient damaged crystal back to Fa Ram, and Jin agrees to help investigate it. At harvest, Cai Xiulan leads Tigu, Gou Ren, Ri Zu, and Yun Ren away toward the Dueling Peaks tournament, leaving Jin and Meiling with the growing household.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Jin Jue left the Cloudy Sword Sect after an inner disciple nearly killed him and became the farmer Jin in the Azure Hills. At Fa Ram he built a home centered on cultivation through land, food, and useful work. Meiling became his closest partner, and friends from Hong Yaowu joined a household that also includes awakened animals. Big D, also called Bi De, serves as Jin's first disciple and senior guardian. Tigu, Ri Zu, Chun Ke, Pi Pa, and Wa Shi have their own abilities and places within the farm. The household also bears scars from Chow Ji's corruption, including Bi De's lasting injuries and Ri Zu's knowledge of the methods used against them. Jin's refuge is therefore peaceful but not isolated from the consequences of earlier violence or his abandoned sect identity.
Story so far - through chapter 12 (this book)
Jin and Meiling settle into married life while expanding Fa Ram's fields, livestock, and beehives. Cai Xiulan works beside Gou Ren and the animal disciples, searching for the cultivation lesson behind Jin's farming. Her rivalry with Tigu becomes a productive training partnership, and she senses a damaged earth spirit connected to the farm, although her forceful approach drives it away. Beneath her progress, nightmares from the battle against Sun Ken return. Cai Xiulan blames herself for the people who died under her leadership and struggles with the praise attached to the false public account of her victory. Jin and Meiling recognize her distress without pressing her. When she finally breaks down, Meiling stays with her through the night and helps her speak about the dead rather than carrying them alone. Meanwhile, Jin and Meiling deliver two healthy calves, complete the main spring planting, and organize the household's work. With the rice transplanted and the farm entering a quieter period, Jin, Meiling, Cai Xiulan, and Gou Ren leave for Hong Yaowu.
Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)
Jin's group is welcomed into Hong Yaowu while Pi Pa manages Fa Ram and Ri Zu oversees the calves. Cai Xiulan begins participating in village life and grows closer to Meiling's family. At a spiritually potent clearing, the damaged earth spirit corrects the rigid movement of her sword form, steering her toward a more natural dance. Back at Fa Ram, Tigu's contempt for Ri Zu's medicine leads Ri Zu to demonstrate that she can paralyze Tigu with controlled medicinal chi. Chun Ke persuades Tigu that both disciples have been trying to force respect and friendship. A cautious exchange of instruction and tea begins a truce between them. Cai Xiulan then tells Jin how the celebrated version of Sun Ken's defeat erases the dead and intensifies her guilt. Jin affirms her compassion and asks to be treated as a friend as well as a teacher. In her next nightmare, Cai Xiulan breaks the repeated sequence of defeat, uses the unfamiliar dance in her sword work, and overcomes the embodiment of her self-blame. She accepts that mourning those she led is not a weakness.
Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)
Wa Shi vanishes into a sealed watery realm, where an ancient black turtle identifies him as a young dragon and begins teaching him control of water. Elsewhere, Lu Ri traces Jin Jue's departure from the Cloudy Sword Sect. Sect leaders discover that Jin was nearly killed amid systematic abuse of outer disciples, punish the responsible inner disciple, and order Lu Ri to continue a discreet search toward the Azure Hills. At Fa Ram, Meiling takes charge of accounts while Jin cultivates unusual plants. Bi De becomes convinced that the scattered solstice sites must be studied directly, and Jin supports his wish to travel. In Verdant Hill, Jin arranges a trial sale of maple syrup, researches regional plants and animals, and gains approval for a road linking the town to Hong Yaowu. The magistrate also asks Bi De to address dangerous animals during his journey. Meiling stays behind to support Meihua through childbirth. After mapping visible formation points and obtaining a broader regional map, Bi De leaves the Shrine of Fire alone. His expedition now combines service to threatened settlements with a search for the purpose of the ancient sites.
Story so far - through chapter 41 (this book)
Meiling identifies contaminated well water as the cause of illness in Verdant Hill and works with its magistrate and lady to contain the threat. Her medicinal chi clears the contamination, and she also heals the lady's long-standing injury. At Fa Ram, Wa Shi returns from the hidden realm able to shift between carp and dragonlike forms. A flight with him carries Cai Xiulan into the Profound Realm. Meihua safely gives birth to a son, and soon afterward Meiling tells Jin that she is pregnant. Bi De's travels lead him to Eighth Correct Place, where he kills the unnatural wolf called the Terror, aids the damaged village, and gives its defender Zheng Fei basic martial training. Farther on, he finds a village destroyed by Sun Ken and meets Yin, an awakened rabbit, and her crippled snake master Miantiao. Miantiao admits that he trained Yin as a weapon for revenge and planned to abandon her while seeking death. Bi De refuses to kill him and insists that atonement requires living differently. Yin secures Miantiao's promise to live, and both join Bi De's investigation of the regional shrines and dances.
Story so far - through chapter 48 (this book)
Tigu asks Fa Ram's earth spirit for a human form so she can communicate and live among the household without the barriers of her cat body. Warned that the change may kill her, she accepts a lightning tribulation and survives as a human woman. Jin and Meiling affirm that she remains family, and Ri Zu finds her new body healthy rather than corrupted. Tigu cannot return to cat form, but repeated tests reveal no injury and suggest that her own wishes may anchor the transformation. Beyond Fa Ram, Lu Ban wins standing within the Shrouded Mountain Sect while occupying the body of the murdered Zang Li. He is posted north to Fangtip Fortress and intends to exploit the freedom it offers. Jin's own bond with his crops deepens, and Babe reveals that he has long been an awakened ox who freely chooses plowing as his work. During Bi De's expedition, repeated shrine layouts, altered elemental sites, and a vision in the Ash Forest reveal an immense five-element pattern across the Azure Hills. The ancient formation is damaged, its center is empty, and its original purpose remains unknown.
Story so far - through chapter 57 (this book)
Lu Ri organizes the Plum Blossom's Shadow to search for Jin Jue and sends an agent to Verdant Hill. The magistrate blocks the covert inquiry and warns Jin without exposing his identity. Jin considers drawing future investigators away from Fa Ram. At home, he and Gou Ren complete a water-powered mill, while Tigu asks to accompany Cai Xiulan to the Dueling Peaks tournament. Jin tests her judgment through road work and difficult errands in Verdant Hill. She controls her temper and passes. Yun Ren's northern travels lead him through an illusion into a hidden tomb guarded by a giant white fox. Because he respects the grave and seeks a way to preserve images, the guardian teaches him an illusion technique and later recognizes him as a relative through his mother's bloodline. A nearby Shrouded Mountain force fails to find the refuge, while Lu Ban secretly takes a scroll called The Blade of Fire at Fangtip Fortress. Yun Ren leaves with new skill and an invitation for the guardian to meet his family. Jin and Meiling decide to remain home because of her pregnancy. Cai Xiulan, Tigu, Gou Ren, and Ri Zu form the expected tournament party, and Fa Ram adopts a shared emblem as several disciples consider family names.
Story so far - through chapter 64 (this book)
Lu Ri reaches Fangtip Fortress and forces its Shrouded Mountain young master to confirm Jin's earlier presence in Verdant Hill. At the same time, Bi De, Yin, and Miantiao enter the last marked formation site. After a difficult descent through hostile caves, they find murals of an ancient human-and-beast society and recover a damaged crystal containing fragmented memories. The images show leaders empowering the land, followed by war, corruption, and catastrophe, but do not explain the cause. Bi De returns to Fa Ram with his companions and the crystal. Meiling removes a corruptive remnant from Miantiao, though she cannot repair his old spinal damage, and Jin offers him glassmaking work. Jin agrees to support a patient investigation of the formation, while Cai Xiulan offers to search her sect's library. Bi De chooses the name Fa Bi De to bind himself to his home. As the enlarged household begins harvesting, Cai Xiulan reflects on her recovery and her new place in the Profound Realm. Jin and Meiling remain at Fa Ram, expecting their child. Cai Xiulan accepts responsibility for Tigu, Gou Ren, and Ri Zu, then departs with them and Yun Ren toward the Dueling Peaks tournament.
How does it end? (ending)
Fa Ram begins its expanded harvest with Jin and the pregnant Meiling remaining at its center. Bi De has returned with Yin, Miantiao, and a damaged crystal that preserves fragments of an ancient land-empowering formation and its catastrophe. Jin supports a careful investigation, Cai Xiulan plans to seek relevant material in her sect library, and Miantiao accepts useful work and treatment at Fa Ram, although his spinal injuries remain. Tigu is healthy in human form but has found no way to become a cat again. Wa Shi can shift into a dragonlike form, and the rest of the household has gained new infrastructure, responsibilities, and family ties. Cai Xiulan, now in the Profound Realm, departs for the Dueling Peaks tournament with Tigu, Gou Ren, Ri Zu, and Yun Ren. Lu Ri's network has traced Jin Jue to Verdant Hill without confirming Jin's identity, while Lu Ban commands Fangtip Fortress from Zang Li's stolen body and retains a hidden cultivation scroll. The ancient wound in the Azure Hills and the attention gathering around Jin therefore remain unresolved.
