In short (whole book)

Jin takes Fa Ram's extraordinary harvest to market while Tigu, Cai Xiulan, and their companions attend the Dueling Peaks tournament. The journey uncovers Jin's commercial importance, a message from Gramps, and an ancient crystal record linked to broken formations. Cai Xiulan wins the tournament over Tigu, but Lu Ban and the Shrouded Mountain Sect abduct Tigu and attack her allies. The Azure Hills cultivators unite in resistance, Jin defeats Lu Ban, and he prevents a wider war by demanding compensation and reconstruction. Cai Xiulan survives severe cultivation damage and receives further healing from Fa Ram's earth spirit. The household returns home intact but newly exposed to provincial politics. Jin refuses to rejoin the Cloudy Sword Sect, Tigu forms new friendships, and Liu Xianghua begins openly courting Gou Ren. Lu Ban is dead, yet an unknown woman retains a residue of his grudge, while the ancient formation, the Dueling Peaks archive, and Fa Ram's broader responsibilities remain unresolved.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Jin established Fa Ram as a home shared with Meiling and a growing household of awakened animals and human companions. He is also known as Jin Jue, a name tied to an earlier life in cultivation. Meiling developed her work as a healer, while Jin's disciples learned to cultivate, protect one another, and take on responsibilities of their own. Cai Xiulan survived grave wounds and demonic chi after the conflict with Sun Ken because Jin and Meiling treated her. That recovery deepened her connection to their household. Jin also came into conflict with a powerful Shrouded Mountain figure while protecting Meihua, leaving a dangerous grievance unresolved. By the start of this volume, Fa Ram is prosperous and closely bonded, but its unusual people, products, and strength are becoming harder to keep beyond the notice of sects and merchants.

Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)

Jin's unusually early rice harvest is too valuable for the market in Verdant Hill, so he plans to sell it in Pale Moon Lake City and seek help for a deteriorating crystal. Meiling remains at Fa Ram to continue her medical work. Cai Xiulan, Tigu, Ri Zu, Gou Ren, and Yun Ren reach the city on their way to the Dueling Peaks. A crystal carver cannot restore the damaged object but offers access to a more senior expert. At the tournament town, Cai Xiulan secures her sect's welcome for Jin's household, while Tigu registers as the group's only competitor. Gou Ren meets Liu Xianghua, the Misty Lake young mistress who considers Cai Xiulan a rival. Jin sets out with Bi De, Yin, and Miantiao, carrying three hundred bags of rice and seeking both supplies and information about people looking for him. Meanwhile Lu Ri follows signs of Jin Jue, and Lu Ban arrives to scout tournament talent for the Shrouded Mountain Sect.

Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)

The Dueling Peaks tournament opens with Cai Xiulan publicly confirmed in the Profound Realm and Tigu measured as a powerful Initiate. Both advance through the preliminary round, and Tigu earns respect by using a one-sided match to teach her opponent. She and Ri Zu then explore the Hill of Torment, where Tigu kills a dangerous five-venom spider. Jin reaches Pale Moon Lake City and learns that repairing the ancient crystal could take decades. A possible transfer into another high-quality crystal instead sends him toward an elderly holder near the tournament. His harvest proves equally consequential: the Azure Jade Trading Company identifies the rice as gold-grade, agrees to buy his large supply, and purchases Fa Ram's maple syrup at a premium. Jin preserves his original merchant relationship and uses the new agreement to seek medical learning for Meiling, whose pregnancy he confirms.

Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)

Jin acquires industrial materials, medical references, and plans for equipment through the Azure Jade Trading Company. He also considers a difficult southern search for cacao and coffee. At Fa Ram, Meiling manages the farm while a damaged earth spirit appears in her dreams, revealing broken dragon veins and painful missing memories. Cloudy Sword agents trace Jin's altered city identity to Jin Jue and request a meeting. Though afraid of his former sect, Jin accepts support from Bi De, Yin, and Miantiao rather than facing Lu Ri alone. Lu Ri approaches with courtesy and delivers a sealed letter from Gramps. The message confirms that Jin's adoptive grandfather is alive but away on an undisclosed duty, and that he has left a gift which will open when Jin reaches a later stage. Lu Ri also conveys the Cloudy Sword Sect's apology, an offer of reinstatement, reparations, and protection. Jin must now decide whether any return to the sect has a place in the life he built at Fa Ram.

Story so far - through chapter 35 (this book)

A recollection shows how the orphaned Jin Jue was rescued and trained by Gramps before being sent to the Cloudy Sword Sect. In the present, Joe and Jin Jue reconcile as the two conscious remnants within Jin's shared existence. They choose Fa Ram and its people over a return to sect life. Jin refuses reinstatement, receives Gramps' sword and sealed scroll, and accepts the sect's sincere amends on his own terms. At the tournament, Tigu survives Liu Xianghua's steam-powered furnace and wins their hard contest. Their respect grows, while Xianghua's showing improves the standing of her mechanically gifted younger brother, Liu Bowu. Tigu later defeats the Hermetic Iron young master, and Cai Xiulan defeats the Grand Ravine finalist, setting a final between the two women. A broad celebration brings rival sect disciples together. Cai Xiulan senses an incomplete five-part harmony in their shared dance, strengthening her hope that relationships across sect boundaries can serve more than competition.

Story so far - through chapter 42 (this book)

Jin's group reaches the hidden monkey settlement at Crystal Hill. The clan leader agrees to transfer the damaged recording into a preserved crystal in exchange for knowledge of the clan's former master. Matching spiral designs connect the settlement to Bi De's wider formation inquiry. The group chooses a fast, irreversible procedure powered largely by Jin. At the Dueling Peaks, Cai Xiulan and Tigu prepare for their final while Ri Zu begins treatment that lets Liu Bowu take steps without a crutch. Lu Ban studies Tigu's recorded fights and connects her master to Jin, turning his attention toward the household. The crystal ritual becomes unstable after detecting something alive within the recording and pulls Jin, his disciples, and the monkeys into its memories. Bi De links their separate memory prisons while Yin, Miantiao, and the monkey leader fight corrupt shades. They rescue the full group and encounter the remnant of an ancient guardian. Everyone returns alive, and the transfer succeeds, but Jin is severely depleted and the catastrophe preserved in the crystal remains unexplained.

Story so far - through chapter 50 (this book)

Cai Xiulan defeats Tigu in the tournament final, and the two openly affirm their bond afterward. The celebration ends when a Shrouded Mountain visitor seeks to recruit Cai Xiulan and probes for Jin and Tigu. His followers then abduct Tigu, gravely wound Rags, and destroy Loud Boy's cultivation. Cai Xiulan and Ri Zu begin a desperate rescue, while attacks spread to Gou Ren and Yun Ren. Ri Zu frees Tigu by helping her use the cat form she had feared, and Azure Hills competitors from rival sects unite against the attackers. Yun Ren becomes the eighth wielder of the sentient sword Summer's Sky, and Bi De arrives in time to protect a badly burned Cai Xiulan. Jin enters the fighting, rescues Yun Ren, and confronts the sect force. He accepts a temporary de-escalation to prevent immediate war, then faces Lu Ban, the hostile figure behind the assault. Jin overwhelms Lu Ban's defenses with one earth-empowered strike, ending the attack, although Lu Ban's survival and the political consequences are still uncertain.

Story so far - through chapter 58 (this book)

Ri Zu stabilizes the wounded, but Cai Xiulan's fire injury threatens her ability to cultivate. Evidence from Lu Ban's remains convinces the Shrouded Mountain contingent that its supposed young master was corrupted or replaced. Jin requires medicine, resources, and cooperation while allowing an investigation. Elsewhere, a mortal maintenance worker awakens an ancient Dueling Peaks system and leads the local elders into a hidden archive before a damaged defense mechanism traps them. The elders eventually disable the barrier and secure the archive as politically neutral ground. In town, Jin turns the aftermath toward restitution. Fighters from every faction rebuild homes and streets, while he compensates a blacksmith for his own collateral damage. Tigu confirms she can still take tiger form and begins to reconsider revenge after speaking with Bi De. Cai Xiulan survives with greatly reduced cultivation, accepts Jin as sworn family, and resolves to rebuild on a kinder path. Jin then negotiates a settlement requiring reconstruction and compensation for the mortal dead while protecting those who came to Tigu's aid.

Story so far - through chapter 64 (this book)

The Shrouded Mountain Sect discovers that its original disciple had been dead for about a year and that an ancient body-eater occupied his body. The sect accepts Jin's limited terms, sends substantial reparations, agrees not to enter the Azure Hills without his permission, and withdraws its surviving disciples. Jin distributes resources to the town and the injured, directing future emergencies through the Azure Jade Trading Company. Fa Ram's golden earth spirit reveals that its links helped the household endure the assault. Its healing dance repairs Cai Xiulan's internal damage, though her cultivation remains diminished and the spirit is distressed by recovered memories of ancient exploitation. Jin leaves provincial authority with a simple instruction to protect people and chooses to return home. Tigu exchanges gifts with the Hermetic Iron young master and invites him to visit. She also becomes sworn siblings with Loud Boy and Rags. The two independent fighters leave to seek restoration of Loud Boy's cultivation, aided by the breakthrough pills Cai Xiulan won at the tournament. Jin's party departs with Liu Bowu and a monkey.

Story so far - through chapter 69 (this book)

Jin's party returns to Fa Ram. Meiling has developed a promising method that uses Wa Shi's lightning to strengthen spiritual-herb preparations, and she believes Liu Bowu's damaged knee can be treated. Jin struggles with delayed distress after the violence and unwanted political authority, but work, family, and shared plans help him recover his balance. He accepts that Fa Ram cannot return to anonymity and decides to seek governance advice, study Gramps' scroll, and let the household face future duties together. The disciples likewise recognize that Jin's strength alone cannot protect a home now known to outside powers. A visit to Bi De's disciple reveals Zheng Fei defending his village with a rooster mask, spear, dog, and warning talisman. In the closing developments, Liu Xianghua formally asks Gou Ren's parents for permission to court him. Lu Ban is confirmed dead, but an unidentified woman infiltrates Shrouded Mountain storage and takes a small residue of his grudge for possible revenge. Lu Ri's mission report reaches the Cloudy Sword elders, leaving Jin's refusal to return in place without creating a new conflict.

How does it end? (ending)

The Shrouded Mountain assault is settled through reparations, rebuilding, and withdrawal rather than further retaliation. Lu Ban is confirmed dead, though an unidentified infiltrator preserves a trace of his grudge for possible future harm. Cai Xiulan's internal injury is healed, but her cultivation remains reduced and she chooses to rebuild on gentler terms. Tigu accepts both her human and tiger forms, and her bonds with Ri Zu, Loud Boy, Rags, and the Hermetic Iron young master widen Fa Ram's circle. Loud Boy and Rags leave to seek restoration of his cultivation, while Liu Bowu travels to Fa Ram for treatment. Jin refuses a return to the Cloudy Sword Sect but retains Gramps' letter, gift, and favor. He and Meiling await their child and accept that Fa Ram is now known to powerful outsiders. The ancient recording, the earth spirit's damaged past, the politically sensitive Dueling Peaks archive, and a possible southern trading expedition remain open. Liu Xianghua formally asks Gou Ren's parents for permission to court him.
