The death withheld all along is Perry Wright's, and the truth of his life is the book's real revelation. Behind his charming public image, Perry has for years been violently abusing his wife Celeste, who has kept it hidden even as she plans to leave him. Separately, the man who raped Jane years before, whom she knew only by a false name, is revealed to be Perry, meaning he is the biological father of her son Ziggy. These threads converge at the school's Trivia Night. When Jane recognizes Perry and Celeste's situation comes to a head, Perry attacks Celeste in front of Madeline, Jane, and Renata. Bonnie, Nathan's wife, who as a child watched her father abuse her mother, is triggered by the sight and pushes Perry hard; he falls down the stairs and is killed. The women present agree to tell the police that Perry tripped and fell accidentally, and their united account largely holds, though Bonnie eventually admits to the police what she did and receives a light sentence of community service. In the aftermath the friendships endure, Celeste and her sons begin a safer life, Jane finds peace and a new relationship, and the community's polished surface is shown to have hidden real violence all along.
