Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk characters
By Ben Fountain
Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Billy Lynn (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
A nineteen-year-old infantryman from Texas whose actions during a fierce firefight in Iraq have made him a reluctant national celebrity. He is perceptive, inexperienced, and increasingly aware of the distance between the war he lived through and the reassuring story Americans want him to represent. He spends the Dallas stop of Bravo Squad's publicity tour trying to respond politely while measuring each public display against his memories of combat.
David Dime (Supporting)
Also known as Dime
Appears from the start
Bravo Squad's sharp, disciplined sergeant and the man managing the soldiers through their exhausting public appearances. He shields his men with dry authority, understands the absurdity around them, and remains committed to returning the surviving squad safely to Iraq.
Virgil Breem (Supporting)
Also known as Shroom
Appears from the start
Billy's dead squad leader and mentor, present throughout the day in Billy's memories. Thoughtful and unusually reflective for a combat leader, he taught Billy how to stay attentive under pressure and offered him a moral vocabulary for experiences the victory tour now turns into spectacle.
Mango Montoya (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A talkative member of Bravo Squad whose energy and jokes help the soldiers manage the long stadium visit. Like the others, he moves between enjoying the privileges offered to the celebrated unit and bristling at civilians' shallow assumptions about combat.
A-bort (Supporting)
Also known as A-bort
Appears from the start
One of the surviving Bravos accompanying Billy on the victory tour. He shares the squad's blunt camaraderie and its impatience with strangers who praise the troops without understanding what their service demands.
Albert Ratner (Supporting)
Appears from the start
A Hollywood producer attached to Bravo Squad throughout the tour. He hopes to turn the soldiers' battle into a film and spends the football game pursuing financing and a workable deal, presenting himself as the squad's determined advocate within an industry that values their fame on uncertain terms.
Josh (Minor)
First appears in chapter 2
Albert's young assistant, eager to help secure a film agreement for Bravo Squad. He works phones and contacts around the game while learning how quickly patriotic enthusiasm weakens when money and control are at stake.
Kathryn Lynn (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 3
Billy's older sister, recovering at the family home after a car crash and the collapse of her engagement. Fiercely protective of Billy and distrustful of the public celebration surrounding his unit, she urges him to seek legal help rather than return to Iraq.
Faison (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 6
A young cheerleader working the Cowboys' Thanksgiving game. She and Billy are immediately attracted to each other, and their hurried private conversations encourage him to imagine a connection outside the machinery of the tour, though each brings a very different understanding of duty and sacrifice.
Norm Oglesby (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 7
The wealthy owner of the Dallas Cowboys, accustomed to controlling every part of the stadium and the entertainment surrounding his team. He welcomes the Bravos as honored guests while also viewing their story as a possible business property.
Ray Lynn (Minor)
First appears in chapter 8
Billy's father, a conservative Texan whose disabling stroke has left him dependent on his family and often unable to communicate clearly. Billy's memories of home include both his father's harsh judgments and the diminished man he has become.
