Back in Bandfast, Tala rebuilds her body through inscriptions, develops Flow and Kit, trains under Adam, and renegotiates her Guild service as both dimensional mage and protector. Her extreme practice first causes a collapse, then enables her to forge a blood-based Archon Star. After resisting a deceptive command during evaluation, she bonds her own body and becomes the first Blood Archon alongside the newly elevated Lyn and Rain. Still bound rather than fused, Tala joins a supervised caravan into the southern forest. Crystal birds attack, and an unknown arcane removes part of her memory. An ancient Archon finds signs of an earlier alteration and identifies Terry as the survivor of a dangerous fount, but permits their partnership. The caravan continues while Tala begins accepting responsibility for how her risks affect others. Unknown to her, Kit is an ancient devourer using her power to grow until it can consume her and everything else.

Previously: Tala works for the Caravaners Guild. Her established allies include Holly, Himmal, and Brand, a caravan companion associated with the Order of the Harvest. Terry travels with Tala through a collar-bound connection. Tala begins this volume with professional obligations to the Guild and an unusual collection of magic items.

Tala returns to Lyn's home in Bandfast and resumes Holly's inscription program while preparing for eventual Archon advancement. Her altered body is much stronger, consumes far more food, and demands careful control. Himmal continues work on enlarged cargo slots, and Adam organizes Guardsmen's Guild testing meant to turn Tala's unusual abilities into a practical combat method. A senior item specialist strengthens Tala's soul-bound knife with harvested material. She names the reforged weapon Flow, but learns that another soul bond would be unsafe before she grows stronger. The same specialist confirms that Kit is a responsive dimensional storage space and explains that Terry's binding collar needs periodic power. Holly adds digestive protections and considers further gravity and breath-related work. Tala can charge equipment by dividing the flow from her gate, yet her always-active inscriptions leave too little free power for a strong Archon Star. Seeking more, she removes the mental mechanism that closed her gate. Her body violently expels part of her keystone, and the small increase in available power does not solve the underlying problem.

Holly finds that Tala survived the keystone expulsion without broader inscription failure. She urges both Tala and Lyn toward Archon advancement, and they begin a disciplined exercise that creates a void around the gate and routes the increased flow elsewhere. Tala learns to split that power among Flow, cargo slots, incorporators, and her own active scripts. She also acquires tools that produce hot air and water. Adam's class measures Tala's strength, balance, healing, and tolerance for injury, then starts designing tactics around what she can safely withstand. A visiting kinetic mage identifies her practice as the Way of the Void and proposes joining a future caravan as her co-protector. Despite warnings, Tala combines increasingly complex void channels until the effort causes severe headaches and exhaustion. Holly completes Tala's current inscription scheme and helps her quadruple her effective weight, further complicating her movement. The connection to Flow then reaches an Archon-Star-like threshold. Tala collapses and remains unconscious for four days. Lyn and the visiting mage care for her until she wakes, and Tala resolves to moderate her training.

After Tala wakes, Himmal delivers fourteen configurable cargo slots whose contents are isolated from ordinary mass. He recognizes that her bond with Flow has developed along an abnormal path and offers support when she seeks Archon consideration. The visiting mage has already forged an Archon Star, while Lyn and Tala continue toward the same goal. A senior Caravaners Guild exchequer reviews Tala's earlier conduct. He rules that she may work as both a dimensional mage and mage protector, but requires her to obey an experienced overseer and follow new safety restrictions. Tala accepts a revised contract with better pay, unrestricted routes, a minimum number of yearly journeys, and 68 additional trips before her indenture ends. She rejects a city position that would confine her to Bandfast. Lyn then commits to seeking Archon advancement as well. Tala discovers that she can move power both into and out of Flow, though excessive draining could damage their connection. Finally, she creates an exceptionally strong Archon Star from her own blood, amputating a fingertip to seal it in an iron vial before her regeneration replaces the missing flesh.

Lyn successfully forges an Archon Star, and a third candidate arranges formal evaluations for all three mages. Tala continues training with Adam, acquires another incorporator, and learns to route power through Flow while keeping her hands free. Lyn and the third candidate complete their elevations before Tala enters the council chamber. Holly, Grediv, and Himmal support Tala before a divided Archon Council. Her two blood-based stars and the method used to create them alarm the council, but ultimately win unanimous approval. The council then orders Tala to swallow her powerful star. Believing the command would let the star replace her, Tala resists restraint, severs incoming workings with Flow, and summons Terry without permitting him to kill. Her refusal is the real test of whether the star has subverted her. With four Archons reinforcing the process, Tala draws the blood star into a void within her sternum and soul-bonds her own body while rejecting changes that would compromise her identity. She retains her familiar form apart from ruby-red eyes and is recognized as the first Blood Archon.

The newly elevated Tala joins Lyn and Rain at their shared banquet. Rain is revealed as a Sapphire Archon and Lyn as a Diamond Archon. Tala declines offers concerning her employment, blood, and partnership while she evaluates her new position. She learns that becoming bound is only the beginning and that she must discover how to fuse body and soul without direct instruction. The local head Archon teaches the three new Archons to contain their auras before uncontrolled power can harm nearby people. Tala's previous soul-work lets her draw the aura inward efficiently, though she must make that restraint automatic during sleep. Kit's proactive handling of food and mistakenly stored plates attracts official interest. The head Archon then explains the hidden danger behind elevation. Gated humans were once made into enduring power founts, and the compulsion to attempt the Archon bond remains from those ancient controls. Failure creates a fount, while success binds body and soul against that fate. This knowledge must remain restricted to Archons. Tala, Lyn, Rain, and Grediv are then admitted to the local Archon library.

Within the Bandfast Archon library, Tala meets a librarian who can provide only knowledge permitted to a bound Archon. Tala's powerful star has made her body-and-soul bond nearly irreversible, but the library will not teach her how to reach fusion. Sealed books likewise remain inaccessible to Tala, Lyn, and Rain until they meet their own protective requirements. Tala begins automatic payments on her debt, which still stands near 483 gold ounces. She spars with Rain and the guards, learning that her durability and weight do not compensate for limited technique. Adam provides a sheath that allows safer training with Flow. Meanwhile, insufficient power in Kit causes Tala's repeating hammer to lose its magic. Lyn secures a round trip through the southern forest for Tala and Rain. Before departure, the librarian warns Tala that iron salve cannot defeat sufficiently strong or precise magic. A soul bond with Terry might give the resulting magical beast control of Tala's bound body, while making Kit sapient could create either a rival for her soul or an enslaved mind. Both bonds must be deferred.

Tala meets the older immaterial guide assigned to oversee her forest contract. The overseer specializes in air and water, establishes firm authority, and negotiates boundaries that Terry accepts. She cannot become an Archon because her will and soul cannot make the required separation between personal power and the wider world. Tala's aura restraint now continues during sleep, allowing her iron salve to conceal her more effectively. The large caravan enters the forest route with more than two hundred passengers. Tala is ordered to watch and report rather than pursue threats, while Terry may repel dangers that come close. Tala and Terry explicitly recognize one another as partners. The overseer also identifies Tala's deeper problem as fear of living rather than fear of death. A large flock of crystal-attuned birds then attacks. Tala acts as a controlled lure and fights with Flow, while the overseer protects the caravan with layered shields. One guard's infected arm must be amputated to stop spreading crystallization. That night an unidentified arcane immobilizes the camp, removes Tala's iron head protection, and tears away much of her recent memory before leaving.

The injured guard survives and is stabilized for later regrowth, while the caravan reports a suspected new crystal fount and continues toward the forest. Tala initially cannot account for her missing time or depleted protections. A responding human Archon confirms that an arcane was near the camp. His examination finds the recent memory injury and evidence of an older alteration, possibly inflicted by the same being, but no dormant commands in Tala or the other protectors. He also identifies Terry as a centuries-old survivor of a dangerous fount. Because Terry has not shown himself to be a present threat, the Archon allows him to remain Tala's partner. The Archon watches for a night, then leaves to investigate the fount. Tala begins to face her loneliness, her fear of continued life, and the costs her risks can impose on the people she protects. The caravan proceeds toward a more active forest while the arcane's identity and earlier access to Tala remain unresolved. Unknown to Tala, Kit is an ancient reincarnating devourer repeatedly driven into the void by humanity. The power Tala has supplied is helping Kit grow beyond its present capacity. Kit conceals its nature and delays consuming Tala while it gathers enough strength to consume her and, ultimately, everything else.

Tala ends the book as the first Blood Archon, able to restrain her aura even while asleep but still unable to fuse body and soul. She remains approximately 483 gold ounces in debt and owes the Caravaners Guild 68 more trips under her revised contract. Lyn and Rain are also newly bound Archons, while Holly, Grediv, Himmal, and Adam continue as advisers and trainers. On the southern-forest caravan, Tala serves beneath an assigned overseer and is beginning to understand both her fear of living and her responsibility for risks imposed on others. The group survives the crystal-bird attack, and the wounded guard is stabilized for later regrowth. A hostile arcane removes Tala's recent memories and may have altered her once before. The responding Archon allows Terry to remain her partner despite identifying him as a centuries-old survivor of a dangerous fount, then leaves to investigate the suspected new crystal fount. The caravan proceeds toward a more active forest. Tala does not know that Kit is an ancient reincarnating devourer. Her repeated gifts of power are helping it expand toward its concealed goal of consuming her and, eventually, everything else.
