Black Magic Sanction characters
By Kim Harrison
Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.
Rachel Morgan (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
The witch who leads Vampiric Charms and has learned that her childhood treatment gave her access to demon magic. Rachel has recovered the truth of Kisten's murder, but her use of forbidden curses during the banshee case has made the witch coven determined to judge and control her.
Ivy Tamwood (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Rachel's living-vampire partner and housemate. Ivy treats the coven's campaign as a direct threat to the church family and helps Rachel resist capture, even when the legal and magical pressure makes ordinary business impossible.
Jenks (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The pixy partner in Vampiric Charms. Jenks supplies security and reconnaissance while the coven hunts Rachel, balancing that danger with growing concern for Matalina and their family.
Matalina (Supporting)
Appears from the start
Jenks's wife and the center of their pixy family. Matalina's health is failing as she nears the end of a pixy's natural life, a reality that neither Jenks's devotion nor Rachel's powerful magic can simply cancel.
Pierce (Supporting)
Appears from the start
The nineteenth-century witch restored to a living body after helping Rachel in the banshee case. Pierce is devoted to Rachel and willing to use force against the coven, though his old assumptions and his own dealings with demon magic make his help complicated.
Algaliarept (Antagonist)
Also known as Al
Appears from the start
Rachel's demon teacher. Al considers the coven's rejection evidence that Rachel belongs with demons, and every offer of sanctuary or instruction is designed to increase his claim on her choices.
Vivian (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 2
A powerful member of the Coven of Moral and Ethical Standards sent to help bring Rachel under its authority. Vivian initially approaches Rachel as a dangerous practitioner whose use of black magic justifies restraint.
Oliver (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 6
A senior coven authority directing the effort to capture and silence Rachel. Oliver treats her altered magic and association with demons as threats to witch society, making containment more important than the circumstances in which she used her power.
Trent Kalamack (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 9
The influential elf linked to Rachel through their fathers' genetic work. Trent can offer wards, legal reach, and sanctuary that few others possess, but any protection from him comes entangled with his political and personal interests.
Ceridwen Merriam Dulciate (Supporting)
Also known as Ceri
First appears in chapter 11
The ancient elf Rachel freed from Al. Ceri understands what magical captivity can do to a person and uses her knowledge of curses and demon bargains to support Rachel without pretending the coven's accusations are harmless.
Nick Sparagmos
First appears in chapter 16
Rachel's former boyfriend and former familiar. Nick returns with extensive knowledge of her magical vulnerabilities but without the trust lost when he manipulated her during the theft of the Were Focus.
Lee Saladan (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 22
A demon practitioner whom Al once held as a familiar. Lee's experience with demon captivity and his own history of betrayal make him a useful source of knowledge but an ally whose survival will always come first.
