Blithe Spirit characters

By Noel Coward

Every entry below is hidden until you open it, and each names the chapter the character first appears in.

Charles Condomine (Protagonist)

Appears from the start

A successful novelist who invites a medium to his Kent home so that he can observe her methods for a new book. Urbane and skeptical, he treats the séance as research until it brings his first wife back into his life.

Ruth Condomine (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Charles's practical second wife and mistress of the Condomine household. She shares his amusement at the planned séance but becomes concerned when his behavior suggests that something occurred which she cannot perceive.

Elvira Condomine (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Charles's mischievous and self-possessed first wife, dead for seven years. The séance summons her as a ghost whom Charles can see and hear, although the others initially cannot.

Madame Arcati (Supporting)

Appears from the start

An eccentric local medium invited to conduct the Condomines' séance. Energetic, sincere, and confident in her spirit guide, she is unaware at first that her performance has produced a result after the other guests see nothing unusual.

Dr George Bradman (Minor)

Appears from the start

A doctor and friend of the Condomines who attends the séance with his wife. He approaches the evening as an entertaining social experiment rather than as evidence of the supernatural.

Violet Bradman (Minor)

Appears from the start

Dr Bradman's wife and another guest at the séance. Curious and socially eager, she is more readily impressed by Madame Arcati's claims than her husband is.

Edith (Minor)

Appears from the start

The Condomines' new maid, whose anxious enthusiasm sends her rushing through the house and repeatedly tests Ruth's patience. Her presence proves more important to the supernatural disturbance than anyone initially suspects.
