Bloody Bones recap

Anita Blake and her trainee Larry travel to the Branson area to raise an entire old cemetery for developer Raymond Stirling. The job collides with the killings of local teenagers, the hostile interest of the master vampire Seraphina, and a land dispute involving Magnus and Dorcas Bouvier, siblings with fairy ancestry. Jean-Claude comes from St. Louis with Jason to protect Anita from Seraphina's nest. The cemetery and the Bouvier property conceal Bloody Bones, an ancient being bound beneath the land and used as the foundation of an old family arrangement. Magnus secretly cooperates with Seraphina in an attempt to claim that power. The betrayal releases Bloody Bones and brings all parties into a final confrontation. Anita and her allies destroy Seraphina's nest, Magnus's plan fails, and Larry is forced to confront what vampire execution actually requires. Anita remains engaged to Richard but returns with a stronger appreciation of Jean-Claude, leaving their agreed romantic rivalry unresolved.

Previously: Anita Blake is a St. Louis animator and court-authorized vampire executioner. She killed the former master vampire Nikolaos, after which Jean-Claude became master of the city and claimed that the two mystical marks linking them made Anita his human servant. She continues to reject that claim. Anita later began a relationship with Richard Zeeman, a werewolf science teacher. While investigating shapeshifter disappearances, she and her allies stopped human hunters who were recording the deaths of their captives. Jean-Claude would not accept Anita choosing Richard without giving him an equal chance, so Anita agreed to date both men. Richard then proposed and Anita accepted. She begins this book engaged to Richard, obligated to honor the courtship agreement with Jean-Claude, and increasingly aware that neither romance can be separated from the supernatural communities each man leads or serves.

Developer Raymond Stirling hires Animators, Inc. for an exceptional job near Branson: Anita must raise the occupants of an old cemetery so they can answer questions needed to settle ownership of land intended for a resort. The age and number of the graves make the raising far more demanding than ordinary animation. Anita brings Larry both as assistance and as professional training. Soon after they arrive, local officers involve Anita in the deaths of teenagers whose injuries suggest vampires. Freemont, the officer responsible for the investigation, resents outside interference but cannot ignore Anita's expertise. The commercial assignment and the murder case begin to overlap around land with a long and disputed history.

Anita and Larry meet Magnus and Dorcas Bouvier, the siblings who run a tavern called the Bloody Bones and whose family has an old claim on the surrounding land. Both possess traces of nonhuman ancestry, and the property carries obligations that Stirling's plans do not account for. The vampire evidence also points toward a local nest powerful enough to challenge Anita's legal authority. Anita contacts Jean-Claude because confronting another master on that vampire's ground without support would leave her dangerously exposed. Her need for his help intensifies the personal complication already created by her engagement to Richard and her promise to date Jean-Claude.

Jean-Claude arrives with Jason and joins Anita in a formal visit to Seraphina, the local master vampire. Seraphina's nest includes Janos and other old vampires who combine physical danger with powers built around fear. The meeting confirms that the deaths cannot be handled as a routine execution case, and Seraphina takes an interest in the bond between Anita and Jean-Claude. Larry sees more clearly how vampire hierarchy can defeat ordinary legal safeguards. Meanwhile, the Bouvier family history suggests that the cemetery and resort site cover something older than the graves, and that disturbing the land could break a supernatural containment rather than merely resolve a title dispute.

The investigation links the vampire nest's plans to the power hidden beneath the Bouvier land. Anita and Jean-Claude work within the limits of their marks while resisting Seraphina's efforts to control the encounter through terror. Larry is no longer only observing: the hostile vampires force him to consider whether he can use the tools and authority of an executioner. Dorcas explains more of the burden her family has inherited, while Magnus remains focused on ending that burden. The old cemetery cannot safely be treated as an isolated animation job, because the dead, the disputed property, and the entity bound below it are parts of the same arrangement.

Anita identifies the power beneath the land as Bloody Bones, an ancient being held by a binding connected to the Bouvier line. Seraphina's nest wants access to that power, and the pressure on Magnus and Dorcas increases as Stirling's project threatens the physical site. Anita, Jean-Claude, Larry, and Dorcas prepare for a confrontation in which raising the cemetery may strengthen forces they are trying to contain. Seraphina's vampires have shown that they are willing to use both human victims and supernatural coercion, but the person enabling their access to the Bouvier secret has not yet openly declared a side.

Magnus Bouvier is exposed as Seraphina's collaborator. Hoping to free himself from his family's inherited burden and gain the power attached to Bloody Bones, he helps the vampire nest break the old binding. Bloody Bones is released, but Magnus cannot control the result and his bargain fails. Anita and Jean-Claude fight Seraphina's group while Dorcas opposes her brother's betrayal. Larry must take direct action against vampires, crossing from supervised animator work into the lethal responsibilities Anita has tried to make him understand. Seraphina and the attacking members of her nest are destroyed, and the old source of power beneath the disputed land is no longer held for exploitation. Anita returns to St. Louis still engaged to Richard. Her reliance on and attraction to Jean-Claude have deepened, however, so the promise to let both men court her remains a real conflict rather than a formality.

The cemetery assignment, the Bouvier land dispute, and the vampire killings converge beneath the hill. Magnus Bouvier has made common cause with Seraphina's nest and betrays the others in pursuit of the power tied to Bloody Bones. The ancient being is released from the binding that the Bouvier family maintained, but Magnus does not gain the secure future he expected from the bargain. Anita, Jean-Claude, Larry, and Dorcas survive the confrontation and destroy Seraphina and the vampires who continue attacking them. Larry is forced to act as a vampire hunter rather than merely Anita's animator trainee, making the dangers of her second profession immediate to him. Bloody Bones is no longer available as a captive source of power, and the supernatural basis of the land conflict is broken. Anita returns to St. Louis still engaged to Richard, but Jean-Claude has proved indispensable against Seraphina and has become harder for her to dismiss as only a coercive vampire master. The agreement that she date both men therefore remains active, carrying the triangle into the next book.
