Borders of Infinity

By Lois McMaster Bujold

This collection opens with Miles Vorkosigan recovering from major surgery when Imperial Security chief Illyan questions him about irregular Dendarii operational accounts, a politically dangerous accusation Illyan hopes to defuse quietly. The book's first story then flashes back to Miles's first field assignment as newly commissioned Ensign, sent by his father to the remote village of Silvy Vale to investigate a mother's claim that her infant daughter, born with a treatable birth defect, was murdered. Arriving as the accused father flees suspicion, Miles must press a reluctant village speaker and a resistant community to cooperate with a formal inquiry.
