In short (whole book)
Riley Cruz accepts an Enclave job to recover a demon-made object that can control a person's will, bringing Max Volkov, Dez, Nash Mitchell, and her witch allies into the search. The trail leads from missing specialist Luca Cardelli to witch Isaac and then to Zara Bellarose, who uses a matching pair of serpent cuffs to compel him to steal a blood-tracing spell. A second campaign of attacks proves to be Carl's attempt to force Riley to recover the hidden Alatyr Stone. Riley and Volkov retrieve it, kill Carl and his attackers, and use the Stone to save the poisoned Nash. In Toronto, the team turns the cuffs against Bellarose and hands her to the Enclave, although Cardelli escapes and her larger purpose remains unknown. Riley establishes a warehouse headquarters and begins an open relationship with Volkov. She also learns that Amelia Hunt was not her biological mother, while the magical perception Bellarose gave her remains unexplained.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Riley Cruz, also known as Kid, became involved with the supernatural world as a goat shifter. Her earlier dealings connected her with Max Volkov, vampire technician Dez, witches Helen and Callie, Enclave handler Cage Sato, and the dangerous Alatyr Stone. Carl, Riley's former alpha in Santa Fe, remained a threat, while Damien Creed retained a live connection to the Stone. Those relationships and obligations carry into Riley's effort to build an independent artifact-recovery crew.
Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)
Riley tries to recruit former Green Beret Nash Mitchell for a paid Enclave recovery job. Nash knows about the supernatural because tinnitus protected him from vampire compulsion, and he agrees to hear Cage Sato's briefing. Sato places Nash and Dez under secrecy oaths, then explains that a previous specialist recovered a demon-made object capable of controlling another person's will and disappeared after calling from Kansas City. Max Volkov's investigation of nearby blood-magic sites may be connected, so Sato requires him to work with Riley. Nash accepts a one-job trial while Dez traces the specialist through telephone records. The missing man is Luca Cardelli. The same search uncovers a payment from Zara Bellarose to Carl connected to the earlier Alatyr Stone theft. Riley hopes the financial evidence can be used against Carl. Cardelli's last known movements point Riley and Nash toward a biker bar, while the precise form and present location of the control artifact remain unknown.
Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)
A witness at the biker bar says Cardelli intended to contact a witch, linking his disappearance more closely to Volkov’s blood-magic inquiry. Helen identifies rare blood-fire tourmaline among the ritual materials and helps Riley search the magical market. They find Isaac, an evasive dealer whose memory of the crystal buyer is magically blocked. His blood ritual shows an auburn-haired woman wearing a gold mask, while Tegan reports an unfamiliar shifter scent nearby. Riley leaves with Isaac’s rooster, later naming him Garth and giving him to Nash. Helen identifies the masked woman as Gwendolyn Reynolds. When Riley and Volkov confront Gwen, she recognizes Isaac’s name and flees. An unseen shifter shoots Volkov with silver and also escapes after the scent trail abruptly disappears. Gwen and the shooter remain at large, Volkov is incapacitated by residual silver, and the team still does not know who holds the object.
Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)
The coven shelters Gwen and wards its headquarters against supernatural outsiders. Riley uses Nash's human status to bypass the defenses, with Dez providing surveillance and Volkov driving the extraction. Under questioning, Gwen admits buying illegal ingredients for a private revenge spell but credibly denies any connection to the demon artifact or the shooting. Riley realizes that Isaac supplied a deceptive memory that made Gwen appear responsible. The artifact investigation therefore turns back toward Isaac, whose concealed shop is now protected by a cloaking spell. Gwen is cleared of the central scheme, although the identity of Volkov's shooter and the purpose behind the false lead remain unresolved. Nash proves capable in the infiltration but continues to clash with Dez and Volkov, leaving his place in Riley's developing crew unsettled.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
After Callie is attacked and loses a memory, Helen recovers the missing scene. It shows Isaac wearing a serpent cuff and stealing Callie’s blood-tracing spell, which can locate a bloodline from a descendant’s sample. Riley and Nash enter Isaac’s shop from above and restrain him before he can command them. Riley’s demon blade forces the cuff from his wrist, but Isaac appears unable to remember the artifact or his actions. A deeper memory reveals that Luca Cardelli delivered the cuff for Zara Bellarose. Bellarose possesses its mate and used it to compel Isaac. Riley attempts to trade a decoy memory crystal for Bellarose’s cuff, but Bellarose employs a magical double and escapes with the decoy. Because Helen embedded a tracking spell in the decoy crystal, the team still has a possible way to locate Bellarose. Isaac remains guarded and one cuff is secured.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
The crew prepares for Toronto with disguises, surveillance devices, and Dez's camera-equipped frogs, but Nash is struck by a dart outside a team gathering. The attacker carries the same shifter scent associated with Volkov's shooting. Helen and Beatrix identify a fatal magical poison and find no conventional cure. Riley reveals that she once stole part of the Alatyr Stone for Carl but secretly hid it in his Santa Fe pawn shop. She and Volkov travel there because the Stone may heal Nash. Riley identifies Carl's beta Tony as a major threat and plans to reach the pawn shop through an adjoining pet store. During the trip, Maria Baca gives Riley a ring made by her late mother, Amelia Cruz, and says that Amelia and Santiago Cruz concealed their earlier history. Riley now has a route into Carl's property, but Nash is deteriorating and the Stone must be recovered quickly.
Story so far - through chapter 33 (this book)
Riley and Volkov hide beside the pawn shop and retrieve the Alatyr Stone after closing, only to be surrounded by Carl, Tony, and other pack members. Carl admits that he arranged the incidents involving Helen, Volkov, and Nash so Riley would lead him to the Stone. He intended to betray Zara Bellarose rather than sell it to her. During the fight, Carl also confesses that he set the fire that killed the people Riley believed were her parents. Riley kills Carl with her demon blade, Volkov kills Tony and two other attackers, and the remaining pack members flee. Back in Kansas City, Helen, Alice, Beatrix, and Janice use the Stone in a healing spell. Nash wakes and begins recovering from the poison. Riley is free of Carl and still holds the Stone, but she is shaken by his death and confession. Volkov offers to arrange DNA testing on hair among Amelia's belongings to investigate the concealed family history.
Story so far - through chapter 38 (this book)
Nash recovers and rejoins the operation. A classified Army report confirms that officials used a vampire to erase memories after his Peru encounter with a demon artifact, then destroyed his career when the procedure failed on him. Riley gives him the report before the team travels to Toronto. Dez and Nash penetrate Bellarose's security through a staged exterminator visit, allowing Riley to enter the penthouse under magical concealment. Bellarose catches her after she takes the cuff and traps her with magical fire, a snake pit, barred windows, and a silver net. Riley escapes in goat form, neutralizes the fire, and tricks Bellarose into wearing the other cuff. She uses the paired artifact's command power to subdue Bellarose, whom Cage Sato takes into Enclave custody with both cuffs. Bellarose's magic leaves Riley able to perceive magic and wards, and Bellarose claims the Alatyr Stone was never her real objective. Isaac is also detained, while Luca Cardelli remains missing. Riley leases a warehouse for the crew, Dez accepts Nash as a member, and Riley and Volkov make their relationship public. DNA testing identifies Amelia Cruz as Amelia Hunt and proves she was not Riley's biological mother, leaving Riley's parentage and new magical perception unexplained.
How does it end? (ending)
Riley's team captures Zara Bellarose in Toronto and delivers her and both will-controlling cuffs to Cage Sato. Isaac is also held by the Enclave, but Luca Cardelli remains missing, and Bellarose says the Alatyr Stone was not her true objective. Carl's campaign to force Riley back to the Stone ends when Riley kills him after his confession to murdering the people she believed were her parents. The Stone saves Nash from the magical poison Carl arranged. Riley leases a warehouse as a permanent headquarters, Dez accepts Nash as part of the crew, and Riley and Max Volkov make their relationship public. Bellarose's magic has left Riley able to perceive magic and wards without making her vulnerable to them. DNA results identify her apparent mother as Amelia Hunt and establish that Amelia was not biologically related to Riley, leaving Riley's origins and new abilities unresolved.
